Présentation de l'éditeur
When high school senior Noah Gallagher and his adopted teenage sister, Lo, go to live with their grandmother in her island cottage for the summer, they don’t expect much in the way of adventure. Noah has landed a marine biology internship, and Lo wants to draw and paint, perhaps even to vanquish her struggles with bulimia. But then things take a dramatic turn for them both when Noah mistakenly tries to save a mysterious girl from drowning. This dreamlike, suspenseful story—deftly told from multiple points of view—dives deeply into selkie folklore while examining the fluid nature of love and family.

Gemm is the keeper of the lighthouse as was her mother before her. Gemm had let the life of a top model before returning to the island and her first love. Noah, had never dated as he was totally focused on achieving good grades. His only dream was to be a marine biologist. Lo, who was adopted from China, battled bulimia. They were both entranced by their grandmother's fairy tale story of Selkies.
Noah liked to run every day after work. On one of his runs on Star Island (an adjacent island) he heard a splash and a groan. He raced to the side of the small cliff and saw a young girl who appeared to be drowning. He immediately went to rescue her only to discover she was naked and not drowning. Mara appeared to be about his age and very pretty with dark hair like his sister's. After some embarrassing moments, they began to talk and Noah discovered he had no trouble talking with her. He had never had a female friend.
Mara had many secrets of her own that were slowly revealed to both he and Lo. The grandmother also had a few secrets. The story weaves in and out of each of the individual lives and portions of the story are told from each of their perspectives. By the end of the story, all of their secrets have been revealed.
This is a beautiful piece of fiction with magic mixed in. I am hoping for a sequel to the story.
It's really a magical seeming world that woven here, with mysteries and lore and relationship of genuine emotion, affection and conflict. It stirs the unique places of the soul and lures them into...new, awake and respectful places.
Lovingly done. A+. Recommend.
This fairytale leaves you wanting to read more with its generous twists and turns. I liked that the focus wasn't an obsessive love story for once. I'm tired of reading about girls who's lives begin to fall apart when their boyfriend leaves. Mara is a strong girl who knows how to throw a punch. It's always a nice change from the typical knight in shining honor male savior types.
There are many topics that will leave you wondering about whether they should be accepted the way they are. But think about the diverse and open world we live in. Betsy makes the reader feel every emotion her characters feel and the love that grows from the pages leaves you no doubt that love knows no boundaries and will never be kept from anyone.
The love story is young, innocent and curious. I love stories about legends and you won't be let down. I am excited for the sequel and just to be cliche, I hope it goes into a happily ever after ending.
