Biographie de l'auteur

Founded in 1968, Time Out has grown from humble beginnings into the leading resource for anyone wanting to know what's happening in the world's greatest cities. Alongside our influential weeklies in London, New York, Chicago and Dubai, we publish more than 20 magazines in cities as varied as Beijing and Beirut; a range of travel books, with City Guides now joined by pocket-sized Shortlist series; and an information-packed website. The company remains proudly independent, still owned by Tony Elliott four decades after he launched Time Out London. Written by local experts, and illustrated with original photography, our books also retain their independence. No business has been featured because it has advertised, and all restaurants and bars are visited and reviewed anonymously.

Nineteen thousand nights at the movies 27 août 2010
Par Roochak - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Every time I open the Time Out Film Guide to look up one movie, my eye falls on an entry for another. I start reading, and immediately forget which film I'd wanted to look up in the first place. This is what's so terrible about the book; there's always something new, or half-forgotten, or surprisingly over- or underrated to keep me flipping through these 1226 pages of critical thumbnail sketches, sometimes cutting into the time I should devote to watching the movies themselves.

Like Richard Roud's wonderful, contentious Cinema: A Critical Dictionary (2 volume set), reading the Time Out guide is a seductive, discursive experience; it discourages linear, goal-oriented reading in favor of the pleasures of literary loafing. There are two indexes, one by director, another by alternate titles; both are invaluable, because films aren't always where I expect to find them in these pages.

The list of 100 web links for criticism, shopping, streaming and downloading, news, discussion, and more is exemplary, but I've saved the best for last: the film listings are brainier and better written than those in the Maltin guide.

Final Edition of Time Out Film Guide 10 octobre 2011
Par Max Petterson - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The TIME OUT Film Guide joins the venerable Halliwell's Film Guide, which ceased publication after the 2008 edition. For those who enjoy the Time Out guide, with it's lengthy and ideosyncratic reviews, the 2011 edition is, regrettably, the finale to the series.
After my order for the 2012 edition was cancelled by Amazon, I contacted the publishers by e-mail, and received the following reply:
"We have cancelled this year's Film Guide and don't have plans for a future edition at the moment."
So, if you want to update to the final edition of the guide, I suggest you place your order soon, while there are still copies available, at least at an affordable price.

My Favorite Film Guide 27 août 2011
Par donbodadonbo - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The writers of this film guide seem to agree with my own opinions on films, about 98% of the time. And that's kind of unusual, because a lot of different writers have contributed entries to the films included. Whatever the reason, I know I can count on this book to tell me information that I'll think is significant, well-balanced, & a worthwhile interpretation. Books that compete with the Time Out Film Guide often spend a lot of print on plot lines & synopses of events in the film, & add comments like "great direction", "good acting" & then assign a rating of only 2* Why?. I don't know, they don't say. The Time Out Film Guide does not assign ratings, which some readers may desire, but what they do better than anyone else, is give insightful comments about why a film "works" or doesn't "work".
This book is better balanced than most. There seems to be little or no prejudice against films of a certain genre. Some other books show an obvious bias, for example, against science-fiction films, or films depicting too much violence, & are seemingly downgraded for those reasons alone. The Time Out Film Guide shows no such biases, & discusses films based on their particular merits (or lack thereof).

Cons: Some other film guides have more films listed than this does. The print is too small, & I need to use my glasses, which is not necessary with some of the other guides out there.

All in all, this is, in my opinion, the best film guide available.

fine, but... 15 mai 2011
Par Ricardo D. Watson - Publié sur Amazon.com

Same old Time Guide we all want with wise reviews. But this time the guide is a little heavy. I miss the color pics and extended reviews of the 2004 edition. At the end they should includ noy only Directors index but actors, subjects and countries as they used to be.
Time out 2011 review 5 janvier 2013

Upon hearing a rumor that the 2100 guide may be the last one for a while, I immediately purchased it. Even though the reviews are very insightful, I do miss the omitted features of the past like "Cinefile movie profiles". We get the film quotes at the beginning of each chapter but no profile; the film stills are omitted also, pitty. For all the "info-overload people like me gone are the "categories", film producing countries, actors, awards and subject indexes. In fairness though you do have the Cannes festival review and a handy "movie clicks" internet guide, which has many sites I never knew about. There is a great old song called, "Everything must change"(I like the George Benson version) and it is true. While no listing can be everything to everyone, throughtout the years the Timeout series has been spectacular; I bought my first one in 1997, #5 and was hooked. I really hope the rumor proves to be false; perhaps in this cash-strapped era we are in maybe the folks at Timeout will publish their guide every 2 or 3 years instead of annually. If you love films as I do, get your hands on the 2011 guide.
