I do like his gosh wow sense of wonder 11 août 2014

This is tough to grade. The authors earnestness is obvious, but lacks authority in writing. Might be for fanatics only. Overly long plot synopsis.however in the authors defense, I do like his gosh wow sense of wonder, but not on every page.

Bad Book for several reasons! 16 juillet 2014
Par Mitchell Baker - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
I should not have bought this book but I'm new to Kindle so I made lots of purchases both good and bad to start filling up my digital library.

Oh well, buyer beware! However, if you are reading this review let me immediately draw your attention to two red flags that should have tipped me off. First, the author is using an unlicensed image for his cover which is merely a Toho movie poster that has been altered. In common language this is called - stealing. Toho Studios is very strict about the handling of the image of Godzilla and this brazen theft is shocking. Frankly, I'm amazed Amazon hasn't closed down sales of this book for such blatant theft. Second, if you scan numerous five star reviews of this book you will see that many of those early reviewers have basically only written one review - for this book! This is what is known as a plant review, to help boost a book's initial rating. Click on a few of the reviewer's names and see what other products these readers and "Godzilla experts" have chosen to purchase.

But, sadly I did take a chance and bought this book because I was curious on the author's viewpoints on many Godzilla movies, especially the most recent film from Legendary which seems to divide fans across the Internet. It didn't take long in my reading to see that most of the chapters are simply a general point-by-point synopsis of the films. You can find these types of reviews for free on sites like IMDB or Wikipedia. The author adds little insight or value. Also it is clear that there is a lack of professional editing which makes the entire effort seem amateurish at best with poor use of language, spelling mistakes, and grammar problems. There is a reason that the top writers in the industry never release a book until it has crossed the desk of numerous editors, because editing adds a professional shine that this book is lacking.

So what we are left with is a book that showcases a stolen cover from Toho Studios, a series of point-by-point summaries that can be found for free online through any search engine, and not much else and nothing that warrants a $2.99 purchase. Save your money or at the least search through the other offerings on Amazon for better offerings for books about Godzilla starting with those licensed by Toho Studios.

Surprisingly Humorous, Entertaining Read. 1 juin 2014

Simply put, I think this book needs a new description, because I don't think the current one properly conveys what this book is about. Judging by current reviews and my own experience, people went in expecting something else than what they got. This book may not be for everyone, but for me it was a very pleasant surprise. I enjoy this film genre and will typically purchase any book about the subject matter, which is why I purchased this book. Previous books on the subject, while entertaining due to my interest in the subject matter, were very dry. That is what I expected, but as I began to read through I discovered this book was something else entirely. It hit my sense of humor perfectly, so your mileage may vary. It isn't said outright, but the impression I got while reading this book is that the author was being forced to watch all these films and give a detailed account, with running commentary on the absurdities and campiness. No, it isn't MST3K level, but it gave me that general vibe.

PROS:
*IF* you have the same sense of humor I do, you will love this. The tone is just great, IMO.

The recommendations are a nice idea. I've read plenty of books that rate movies, but this one explains what type of viewer will enjoy a certain film. Is it campy? Is it childish? Is it a movie that will appeal to a more jaded viewer? I am familiar with the subject matter already, but I can see how this could help a new fan.

Godzilla information is easy to come by, but I was impressed with all the non-Godzilla films reviewed. Dogora, Varan, Frankenstein, Yog, King Kong, Atragon, and so on.

CONS:
This is clearly a self-published title. I assume no professional editing, which means there are going to be some typos and awkward sentence structure occasionally. I would consider those to be at a minimum, but they do exist.

Not loaded with new information. The book comes right out and suggests other books that focus on behind the scenes. The biggest part of this book is film synopsis with some additional commentary, but it is primarily opinion. It doesn't claim to be anything else, but some people might want something more along those lines.

Some pictures would have been nice, but probably would have to be licensed so I can understand why a self-published work would go without.

Your sense of humor may vary.

So in conclusion I would encourage anyone interested to give this a shot, just be warned going on that the focus is on campy humor. Some previous reviews cited the humor as a bad thing, but I can't help but think they went in expecting something else or simply are amused by different things. If you take this genre very seriously, this may not be for you, but if you enjoy this genre for the fun of it, warts and all, I think you'll like it. NOTE TO AUTHOR! Seriously try to come up with a better description. I think people will really enjoy this, but they need to know what they are getting. As it stands this book is a fun celebration of the cheese and camp of giant monster movies. Go in expecting to have a good time instead of a scholarly work.

Poorly written, doesn't even cover all the Togo movies, and at times I feel like I'm reading an first draft article by a ten year old.

A True Titan for the Godzilla Fanatic 13 septembre 2014
Par R. Pecora - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
As a huge fan of the Godzilla franchise, this book was a real pleasure to read. The style of writing is very beneficial to learning more about the series and its common factors, and things are hilarious just often enough to shine a humorous light on what might otherwise be uninteresting. I don't regret my purchase one bit, and you won't either. Don't pass up the opportunity!
