To help you succeed, To Become an Investment Banker gives you all the information you need to have at your fingertips as well as extra advice to ensure you stand out from the crowd.

Much of the information is presented in a bullet point format ensuring clarity and absolute ease of access. In addition, the laid-back, chatty tone of this semi-autobiographical book makes it an enjoyable read as well as an essential guide.

With input from four other investment bankers, To Become an Investment Banker encompasses 25 years of collective banking expertise.

This book is the perfect starting point if your sights are set on working in any major financial center.

How I stumbled across this book is irrelevant, looking back on it. I'm currently studying for the CFA Level 1 exam. As an Engineer, breaking into the Financial Services industry today is very difficult. How do you separate yourself from the pack? What questions should you be prepared to answer? What are some of the topics your should be familiar with? How can you appear knowledge about an industry in which you have no real experience but your fascination immerses you in it? These and other questions I found to be addressed in this book. Granted, what written work is going to tell you exactly what it takes to make it in IB? I've been looking, but this book provides a detailed list of questions and situations that can prepare you to engage intelligently in a interview-type conversation.

As an example, I began to reread the book because of an upcoming phone interview with a Managing Director at a Boutique IB. One of the discussions in the book is how to network, but I take it a step farther. I learned that when you're having these types of conversations that will serve as the "sniff test" of your personality and whether you could be a fit, form an agenda of the topics you'd like to discuss with your contact. No more than 4 questions and send it the day before your scheduled meeting or call. This falls under the author's suggestion in the book to ask intelligent questions. I would have been in no man's land asking questions had it not been for this book! Knowing what to stay current in and how it's relative to the world of finance and picking one good story that you've been following and find a way to bring it up in your discussion sounds like a pearl to me. This not only sends the message that you're well-rounded, but you also show an aptitude for being knowledgeable and detail-gathered about specific topics.

I've used this book to formulate cold-emails and I've been succesful at landing some great contacts that will hopefully lead to an interview or best, a job in corporate finance. This is a great idea for a book. To my engineer background, crossing over is intimidating because you don't even know what you want to do on the finance side. You just know it's interesting. But to have a conversation with someone in finance and be able to use terms like "capital markets" and "structured sales" or knowing that you want to work in a particular sector team because of your background, makes you appear to be a viable candidate. I know realize what I want to do in Corporate Finance because I learned the verbiage in this book and at a macro level, what happens and doesn't happen in Corporate Finance.

I strongly recommend anyone looking to transition in their careers to Investment Banking to read this book. It really helps you gauge whether or not this is something you really want to do.

I have read a lot of stuff on how to break into investment banking and i have to say that this book was the most helpful !!

It covers all the angles, both technical and non technical, to prepare yourself for interviews but also and importantly on how to succeed once you get an offer. I am now working in M&A at Barclays Capital and I am really impressed to see that this book really reflects what it s like to be in I.Banking!

A big thumbs up to the author of this book. I strongly recommend all the future graduates to read it, it is a golden book.

I am looking to make a career change into finance, ideally investment banking, and this book helped tremendously with understanding the job side of what it is that investment bankers actually do, how the industry breaks down (and how firms are broken down), what to do to break into the field, etc. I would highly recommend it for anyone considering a career in investment banking, either right out of school or as a career change!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Thoughtful, witty, informative, a great read 23 juin 2012

This book really does break down the nitty gritty of what it is like to be an investment banker. It is exhaustive in explaining how to interview for investment banking roles and what one should expect from the job if they do get one. This is a must read for any guy or girl wanting to go into investment banking, its funny at parts and technical only when it needs to be. The book explains many roles within the bank, e.g. trading floor jobs, not just the traditional M&A advisory role, so for those interesting in those sorts of jobs this book is helpful too.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Highly informative and readable introduction to investment banking 18 juin 2012
Par DJLegg - Publié sur Amazon.com
An excellent introduction to investment banking, for both those who are thinking about applying or who already have offers. Written in an easy-to-read style, the book does a very good job of covering both investment banking culture and the application process, as well as detailing and clearly explaining the more technical knowledge expected from a top candidate.

With the job market becoming increasingly competitive, this is exactly the sort of material required for the best applicants to differentiate themselves from the rest...
