Ms. Ang writes of food and Chinese society with a sparkling, hungry wit. She says in the introduction that she's a voracious eater who loves to nibble, sample and slurp her way through food markets and banquets. It's in this manner that she recounts a career as a journalist in China. The book is like comfort food - something you can curl up with and enjoy when you need a warm bellyful of the joy of humanity. She loves her subject and treats it as a chef primping a labor of love. She plates up her story with the deep emotion of cooking for a good friend. One of the things that I really enjoyed about the book is that it is almost a collection of short stories. You can pick it up and read a chapter, put it down - read your spy thriller - and go back to her joyful descriptions of rich broths, spicy chilis and sizzling hot meats. As someone who has visited China, I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in food, and learning about the Chinese people who shared it with her. A sumptuous, mouth-watering read!

"To the People" offers a delicious account of how food binds Chinese people together. As a foreign journalist, Audra traveled throughout the country to write up on its latest developments. Between reaching her final destination and making her editing desk's deadline, she met people and their food along the way. As she recounts her journeys, Audra weaves the inevitable yet delicate connection between the country's people, by way of their cuisine and a shared plate. Audra's description of food is animated and intense, but it is her ability to extrapolate from those delectable moments on the palate -- by reflecting upon the folks and the socioeconomic realities looming over them -- that makes the book a sumptuously enriching read.

To the People, Food Is Heaven: Stories of Food and Life in a Changing China represents a unique take on the concept of a "News Digest," one that feeds the mind curious about today's Middle Kingdom while simultaneously making the belly grumble hungering for a Chinese menu. Ang cooks up a rare combination of gustatory accounts told with gusto about the country's many great cuisines paired with top notch journalism and analysis of key events in China covering the period of its recognition as a major global player hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Audra's writing rocks. Her work merits close reading and space on your bookshelf whether you're a old China Hand (like me) or simply interested in reading one good book in the hope of understanding what this critically important country is all about.

Disclosure: Ms. Ang and I were colleagues working for rival news agencies in Beijing during the '00s. She asked me to read and critique her manuscript prior to publication. However, I didn't know I was mentioned in the acknowledgments until I bought a copy of the book for my library after it came out.

After reading the foreword I knew it was going to be an interesting read. But after a quick reading of page 1 of the introduction, I resolved to start reading before I got into bed and to continue reading while on the way to work the next day. She has the gift of weaving her story into a composite picture of the 'real' China as seen through the lens of a hungry reporter-for story and food. It's a piece of delicate literary work. Kudos to you Audra!
