A very good book for a very good language 11 juin 2014
Par Joop Kiefte - Publié sur Amazon.com
I had access to an early version of this book, and it stays true to the spirit of the language: simple, but saying everything there is to say nevertheless.

Being one of the early speakers of Toki Pona, I usually assert that I learned Esperanto in a month, and Toki Pona in a day. It's that small. However, I usually add that it took a year before I really spoke it in real life. I can wholeheartedly recommend giving this little language a try, just because. And you can do worse that to learn it with the book by the author of the language.

For people who already learned Toki Pona, yes, it's still worth it to buy this book. We really need to get some people up to steam in signed Toki Pona, and the hieroglyph system Sonja worked out is quite cool and consistent.

Totally complete! 10 juillet 2014

Sonja's writing is fun, there are lots of cute surprises and jokes. Her lessons are short, easy and approachable to grammarphobes. After the lessons, you get a lot of nice source material to read and improve with--reading Toki Pona is usually harder than writing it, so it's good practice. She has a complete sign language based on just a few simple hand shapes and points of articulation, and a complete set of hieroglyphs. The official dictionary is in here, and it's simple and clear. So it's really the complete package: the language, tutorial, dictionary, sign language and writing system. Everything is in here.

If you want to get everything out of Toki Pona this is the only way. If you're interested in constructing languages, this is also a great "worked example" of everything you could provide.

Here at last is the textbook from the mother of toki pona and, as such, an essential book for anyone who wants to learn the language. Unfortunately, it is also a book from a person who has been at best a lurker at the developments of the language over the last several years. While many of the issues the community has dealt with are covered, many more are not, and the ones dealt with often ignore or contradict the community discussions. While this book is explicitly said to be how the author uses toki pona, it is bound to be taken as official rather than idiosyncratic, which it occasionally is in a destructive way (the strange playing with the vocabulary --- adding fairly useless words, identifying different word and thus leaving the status of both in doubt, leaving duplicate word in place -- the major case in point), The book is also short on examples, particularly ones that clarify problematic points (almost no problems are actually discussed) but devotes a large chunk to very secondary matters (hieroglyphs, signed vocabulary). The short dictionary is inadequate and occasionally downright misleading, But, as a start in the language, it will get a reader to the point hat they can enter into the discussion of finer points and appreciate the array of text that is available.
