If you want to learn more about German football/soccer, its history and stories, read this book. Hesse-Lichtenberger is a fantastic writer and enthusiastic fan of the sport (and not necessarily the way it is played by the Germans), who puts all his love and knowledge into this book. You will learn about the "Schalker Kreisel" which made one of Germany's club teams (FC Schalke 04) one of the best and most advanced teams in the world when German soccer didn't have a wimming reputation. You will learn about some of the scnadals of German soccer and about some of the forgotten stars. Hesse-Lichtenberger takes the subject seriously, but finds a light and humorous voice that makes this book entertaining and enjoyable.
One of the best soccer books I have read, although readers should have some interest in learning about German soccer. Otherwise this book may be too specialized.

Remember an old TV series SOCCER MADE IN GERMANY with it's entertaining British host TOBY CHARLES? It ran on Public TV in the US in the mid 70's through the early 80's. In it's time it was almost the only source of European Football in the US, although with a German bent. Watching the weekly match highlights left me hungry to learn more about the history of German football beyond the last World or European Cup. Here comes TOR:THE STORY OF GERMAN FOOTBALL. It's terrific.

ULI-HESSE LICHTENBERGER is a working Football Journalist. You can read his regular column on-line at ESPN's SOCCERNET.COM. In TOR (which means Goal in German) he covers the game from the beginning in the middle of the 19th Century. Germany wins the World Cup in 1954, but a national domestic league isn't started until 1963. However almost no other country can match their legacy. 3 World Cup championships and 3 runner's up; 4 European Championships; and numerous club championships.

But TOR is more than competitions and scores. German football is full of Heroes and Villians and they are all part of TOR. You will read about Joseph Sepp Herberger, national team manager from 1935 - 1962; famous players from Fritz Walter through Uwe Seeler, Gerd Mueller, Rudi Voeller, Lothar Mattheus, and Michael Ballack. They are all here. And then there is Germany's greatest footballer, Franz Beckenbauer. HESSE-LICHTENBERGER reveals the great German Kaiser including some character flaws that will demystify his legacy.

Another reason to recommend this book is that it also covers East German football. This makes it a comprehensive look at German football.

Right now the US is experiencing a revival on the international level. This is due to the leadership of our new national team manager Jurgen Klinsman. Klinsman played in 3 World Cups (and won one in 1990). He also won domestic championships in Italy and England, making him a major figure over that last 25 years of German Football. And he is in this book!

I liked this book, a lot. If you follow German or International Football, you will too.

Uli Heese-Lichtenberger's account of the history of German football is amazing. But anyone who has ever followed his regular columns before reading "Tor!" will not be surprised. I recommend this book to anyone who is the least bit interested in not only Germany's version of the world's game, but in a bit of German history too.

My seller here at Amazon was awesome too. My book arrived faster than expected and was in wonderful condition.

If you have any interest in German soccer, you must buy this book. A great read which delves into the details of what happened and why, including how the sport first developed in the country and succeeded over time, sometimes against dramatic opposition. The author does a careful analysis of his own, as opposed to just repeating the thoughts of others, and captures all the high points of the history of the sport in Germany (at least in men's competitions).

My only regret is that this book was not quite a bit longer, with more details especially about the pre-WW II era. I would have greatly enjoyed an even fuller treatment of the subject.

A++++++++++++++

I love this book... I'm not even that huge of a soccer fan, but Hesse-Lichtenberger writes in a style that is accessible and entertaining. I learned a lot and enjoyed it as well. I hope that he will update it to reflect the awesome successes of the Bundesliga in the past few years!
