First things first, the description of this says that Ryuji is in Junior High. That is wrong. It should say he is a Junior in High School! This is not a story of young middle-schoolers who swoon over their crushes, but a story about young people on the cusp of adulthood who, yes, swoon over their crushes. But it also has a more serious side, about the way people can be misunderstood and how rare it is to find that special someone who really understands and accepts you. The opening lines from the first light novel relays it best:
"There is something in this world which no one has ever seen. It is soft and sweet. If it is spotted, I'm sure everyone will want to have it, which is why no one has ever seen it. For this world has hidden it quite well, so that it is difficult to obtain. But, there will come a day when it is discovered by somebody. And only those who should obtain it will be able to find it."
That is the overriding theme of this story. It is full of complications, twists, turns, and misunderstandings galore, but in the end, it is about finding that special someone who can see the soft, sweet core under the rough exterior and grow to accept you for who you are, and how hard it can be to recognize when you have found them. Ryuji, Taiga, and their friends provide a fantastic story with many laughs along the way, but also plenty of moments that leave a lump in your throat.
