The Method:

Stress-free audio learning

Michel Thomas teaches you Spanish through your own language, so there's no stress, and no anxiety. He builds it up, step by step, and you don't move on until you've absorbed and understood the previous point. And, as Michel Thomas said, 'What you understand, you know; and what you know, you don't forget.' With parallels to the way you learned your own language, you'll learn Spanish in 'real-time' conditions. There is no need to stop for homework, additional exercises or vocabulary memorization.

Why it Works:

Learn the Spanish language the way you learned your own

You learned your own language naturally and enjoyably: now you can learn Spanish in the same way. You'll stick with it because you'll love it. Use the unique method perfected over fifty years by the celebrated psychologist and linguist Michel Thomas.

This method works with your brain, helping you to build up your Spanish in manageable, enjoyable steps by thinking out the answers for yourself. You learn through listening and speaking without the pressure of writing or memorizing. You pick up the language naturally and unforgettably.

It is a very good part of a language plan 10 avril 2014

I used this with other programs that are more detailed like Assimil and Teach Yourself. However, even though some may complain about the Accent of Michel and the errors of the English male student, the program does help you form ideas in Spanish and give you valuable "bridges" to help you with the learning. For example, the AR track and the non-AR track, the "would" tense(walking into the WOODS and finding a female river...-ría).

It took me a couple of tries to get thru it but it did help me. I would do it again if I were starting German, French or Italian.

If I were starting Spanish from Scratch, I would do these courses in this order;

1) Michel Thomas Total Spanish plus Perfect Spanish/ with a Practice Makes Perfect Grammar book
2) Assimil with Ease
3) FSI Basic course (online for free)
4) Native materials (books, movies, TV)

EDIT: Madrigal's Magic Key for Spanish is the best source I have used yet.

All the best in your studies,

The best method I have tried 17 avril 2013

Before I started this program I had completed all four volumes of Pimsluer Spanish and finished my first pass through the skill tree on Duolingo. I should have started with Michel Thomas. This was an excellent program that gave me insight into the “How?” and “Why?” that helped me conceptualize and develop a framework for understanding retaining information. I recommend making one complete pass through all the lessons and then going back to reinforce your memory.

The good:
-It includes a manual which allows a connection from what you see to what you here.
-The disks are a conversation between Michel Thomas and two individuals.
-Some of the translation are long which is good because you need to formulate a long answer while not forgetting what originally said.

The bad:
-When introducing a new concept or vocabulary item sometimes there is an considerable amount of time which is quite annoying what Mr. Thomas keeps asking "give me emphasis" on a particular word. It distracts from the course intent.
-Use of words is more complicated then other language learning tools.
-Mr. Thomas has an accent for at times it is harder to understand what is even being said.
-There are 7 disks to the set. It is not until the 4th disk, that explainations of conjugation are explained. It simply makes comprehending various sentences structures in the earlier CD's. For example, sentence phrases like I am, you are, and he/she is, and so on are very basic form of sentence structure. In Spanish this grammar has a basic meaning of "to be" (estar) and the basic form (estar) is conjugated (transformed) depending on person and the words use. So I am is "yo estoy", you are is "tu estas", he/she is is (el/ella/usted esta and so on. Very important in verbal communication and sentence writing. There is a use of this word in different forms. Not until it was explained in disk 4 was it explained. I think it made so much harder to grasp the material.

The speech emphasis parts are frequent and very annoying. They far outweigh the merit the course may have. I work in an office where a far percentage of communication is in Spanish. As I learn more vocabulary I am starting to understand more of what is being said. BUT I do NOT hear people saying/using these word stresses/emphasis's to adamently preached by Mr. Thomas. If nothing else Spanish speaking people use shortened phrases.

I would suggest Pimsleur for a beginner.

Genius! 8 mai 2014

I love the way Michel Thomas teaches. He breaks down a language and introduces it to you in a way that anybody can understand. It also helps that Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn for an English speaker. On top of that, already having a foundation in Portuguese, it makes Spanish even easier for me.

He uses a lot of repetition by going over the same words for a while, but in different word orders for different phrases. He asks you how to say a particular phrase in Spanish, and you have to hit the pause button, then give yourself time to think out the answer. Once you go over the same words over and over again, it sinks into your memory.

I'm half way through and already able to construct my own sentences in Spanish. I don't have to memorise whole phrases at all. This is what's so great about the MT method. He teaches you how to put sentences together instinctively.

By the way, this version teaches Latin American Spanish. Although, I'm aiming for Castilian Spanish. But the differences are very subtle anyhow, so it's simple for me to correct the differences on my own.

I'll be honest and admit I wasn't as interested in Spanish. But after getting into it, MT makes me want to strive harder to learn it properly!

Because I only have a short window of opportunity to grasp Spanish, I thought I'd be stuffed. Michel has made me much more confident with minimal effort (really!). We are off to Peru shortly and I now feel good about it
