Présentation de l'éditeur

This is the full book! Touched by Death is a psychological suspense full of dark mystery in an international setting. It is also book 1 in the By Death series.

Death had touched anthropologist Jade Hansen in Haiti once before, costing her an unborn child and perhaps her very sanity. A year later, determined to face her own issues, she returns to Haiti with a mortuary team to recover the bodies of an American family from a mass grave.

Visiting his brother after the quake, independent contractor Dane Carter puts his life on hold to help the sleepy town of Jacmel rebuild. But he finds it hard to like his brother's pregnant wife or her family. He wants to go home, until he meets Jade - and realizes what's missing in his own life.

When the mortuary team begins work, it's as if malevolence has been released from the earth. Instead of laying her ghosts to rest, Jade finds herself confronting death and terror again. And the man who unexpectedly awakens her heart - is right in the middle of it all.

I enjoy books with unique stories and settings, and Mayer has delivered both of those. Set in Haiti a year after a massive earthquake, we meet a local family trying to rebuild their country and their lives only to have old traumas resurrected by an American mortuary team who've come to retrieve the bodies of an American family believed to be interred in a mass grave following the quake. This process involves opening the grave and sifting through the remains of hundreds of people buried there for the past year. A little macabre, a little CSI, and very unsettling when the team makes a surprising discovery that points to a serial killer in the vicinity.

At the heart of the book is Jade, a woman who assisted in Haiti immediately following the quake with shattering consequences, now returning in an attempt to rebuild her life. I loved her interaction with the rest of the mortuary team, especially Meg and Dr. Mike. And Dane, the American contractor whose brother has married a Haitian wife, is very real in his desire to help others even without wanting to control them. Mayer includes some surprising twists and criss-crosses the story lines in an exciting conclusion. I loved her book, Hide 'n Go Seek, and while this one has different characters, it was very cool to read another story about the physically and emotionally demanding work done by people after mass tragedies. Yes, I recommend this one!

Touched by Death is an outstanding novel by Dale Mayer. Unlike her usual novels that contain paranormal activity, this novel is sheer malevolent actions from ordinary humans. Set in Haiti after the earthquake, the setting provides a lush but damaged background to the true horror hidden under the broken landscape.

The main character Jade Hansen, anthropologist, had been to Haiti before, immediately after the earthquake first hit. Broken by the scenes of destruction and death around her, she lost her unborn child, her fiance and almost her sanity. Prodded by her brother to return to face her demons, Jade joins a team going to Haiti to retrieve the bodies of an American family so they can be returned home and interred.

Dane Carter is already in Haiti, helping the country rebuild and visiting with his brother and sister-in-law. When he and Jade meet the sparks fly but as strange things began happening at the dig site, they both realize there are dangerous secrets that someone is willing to kill to keep buried in the mass grave.

This book had so many twists and turns and I can honestly say that the ending truly surprised me! I was not expecting it to end the way it did so kudos to Ms. Mayer for keeping the suspense up until the ending. There are mentions of voodoo in the story but because this is Haiti, how can there not be? However, these do not take over the story and the evil in this story is purely human. This was a great mystery entwined with a good love story and just enjoyable all the way around.

Dale Mayer has done it again. She's written an amazing, page-turning book that's unlike any other book I've read. I can't imagine any other author setting a book in Haiti after a devastating earthquake - and pulling it off so brilliantly. I cared about Jade and Dane. They felt like real people in trouble. I admired them and wanted them to be safe and happy.

I'm good at guessing endings, but this book kept me in suspense up to the end. I already want to read Mayer's next book!

What a hard hitting novel. It's hard to imagine living through even one of these events, even though it does happen much more often that we like to admit. Mayer takes these very controversial topics and turns them into a captivating suspense novel that will leave you thinking.

Mayer uses her fluid, well written style to create scenes and communities that you can't help but picture in your mind's eye. She has the ability to lay everything out in graphic detail without dwelling on it. Each and every description works its way directly into the storyline creating a cohesive whole, without any gaps or stutters.

The characters in this novel were fairly well developed. There were a couple that I would have liked to know more about as they played fairly important roles in the novel but were basically names on paper. But as a whole, the cast of characters was awesome. They were developed in such a manner that they seemed quite real and very realistic.

As a whole, this novel kept me interested throughout. There were times when you had to cringe, times when you were on the edge of your seat, and times where you felt for the characters.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review

An excellent psychological and romantic thriller, set in quake ravaged Haiti, where a select team of experts are assembled for sorting and identifying bodies from an emergency mass grave, only to find more bodies that describe an unspeakable crime.

Our heroine has returned to the island after her work on the first big quake, to get her life back together after the break-up of a relationship after the loss of their child. She finds new romance with an American contractor there to help the island rebuild, only to fall victim to the evil that lurks in the ruin, just as foretold by a mysterious Voodoo priestess.

A well written, well paced thriller with very believable characters
