Near Death
– A Jake Townsend Science Fiction Thriller

For Jake Townsend, the loss was shattering. And every night for the past two years, he has relived the horror of what happened. The moonless night. The piercing screams. The horrific crash. The night his wife was taken from him. The last time he saw her alive.

Everyone tells him to move on. But for Jake, there can be no closure. A message appears in his dreams—a warning he is reluctant to heed.

The omens ignored, Jake finds himself caught between the desire to see his beloved wife again and disrupting the delicate balance of life and death. The technology he developed has shown him the path, and others will do anything to use it, but at what price?

He must choose, and the consequences may ultimately shatter his world.

Interview With The Author

Q – The premise for NEAR DEATH is a little unusual. How did you come up with the idea?

A – I was perusing the Web, jumping from one link to another, when I landed on a page that had actual Near Death Experiences recounted by the people who experienced them. Very fascinating reading. I didn’t really think much more about it at that time and moved on after a little time there.

About 2 days later, I was watching a show on real mind reading technology using M.R.I. medical equipment and a rudimentary set of words. Then “Click.” My brain made a connection and the story was born.

Q – So, this technology exists?

A – Not as sophisticated a system as Jake Townsend’s machine. But there have been some advances in the interpretation of electrical impulses emitted by the brain. I expect cell phones, cars, TVs, etc. will be able to “read” our minds in the very near future. Scary and cool.

Q – Is this considered a paranormal book?

A – It kind of blurs the lines. Which in some folks’ opinions is not a favorable thing to do for an author’s career. It has a little paranormal, a little creepiness, science fiction, action, and thriller all rolled into one fun package.

I love all those genres, so why not write what I love? It worked for me and I know it appeals to others as well.

I found this book through the author who is in my Twitter feed. I saw a tweet of his and went to Amazon and downloaded the book for my Kindle.

I'm glad I downloaded it over the weekend because I needed every spare moment to read this book. I found its premise compelling and the pace dared me to stop reading. I read until I went to sleep, and it was with me as I had my first cup of coffee the next morning.

The story develops rapidly and went in directions I had not anticipated. It had elements that a good story needs to have. The characters are believable and likable. The mix of dialogue and narrative is just right and kept me entertained while moving the story right along.

I have a medical background and one of the things that impressed me is how the medical aspects were accurate and rang true.

There are a lot of things in this book that I really liked: science, medicine, spirituality, romance. All melded together in a thriller that makes you think while it keeps you fascinated and on the edge of your seat.

I look forward to another great read from the author.

It is always a pleasure to review a novel that kept me absorbed from the first page to the last -- which is exactly the case with Richard C. Hale's, NEAR DEATH. After the tragic loss of his wife in a car crash, Jake Townsend is inconsolable. His beloved wife Beth appears in recurring dreams and is trying to send him a message he cannot quite decipher. Meanwhile, Jake has developed technology that might bring him closer to Beth, but at what cost?

We live in a day and age where new technology does things that not too long ago we may have thought to be science fiction. That is exactly why Hale's book was so gripping. Jake's new technology, a machine that can produce video from the minds of those who have had near death experiences and come back to tell the tale, is riveting science fiction. Or is it a brilliant precursor of what is to come? Probably the former, but as a reader, I couldn't help but explore the possibilities and to weigh the endless ethical/moral questions that go hand in hand with the use of new technology.

NEAR DEATH is a fast-paced, romance-laced, thought-provoking, and highly entertaining novel with an intriguing premise. Hale doesn't shortchange his readers on character development, either. The characters were well-defined, realistic, and had me simultaneously rooting for and against them. Terrific read!

When I read the summary of the book on amazon i immediately thought to myself well this sounds very interesting and different from what I'm normally use to. But I was looking for a change and not only did I find one, I found a new favorite author as well!I'm your typical Nora Roberts and Nicholas Sparks reader and when I read Near Death I was taken by surprise. This fictional novel was unbelievably well written. Not only did it have suspense it had a little romance as well which was an awesome and unexpected twist! This book takes you on an action packed journey with several characters that you can actually relate to. Ive never read anything so detailed and interesting before. The characters were perfect and the different scenes are so detailed you can envision every place like you were actually there. I would recommend this book to anyone, you will not be disappointed! But make sure your schedule is free because you won't want to set this book down!! I look forward to reading Mr. Hale's next spectacular novel! Thank you for a phenomenal read!!

I like books that ask the big questions in life.
Why is the sky blue?
What happens when we die?
Why do people keep hiring Taylor Lautner when he can't act?
I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I picked up `Near Death' by Richard C. Hale - but I definitely got more than I bargained for.
`Near Death' is the tale of scientist Jake Townsend, who loses his wife Beth in a disastrous accident and then proceeds to spend the next few years searching for answers about what lies beyond - and by that I mean, what happens after death.
Townsend is obsessed with not only being able to prove there is another side - but actually being able to communicate with those that have crossed over.
His lab partner, Teri, has been his best friend for years. She starts acting weird, though, when Jake brings in an outsider into their office to start helping them with their invention - a machine that can actually project scenes from people's memories as they relive near death experiences. It becomes obvious to everyone but Jake that she has feelings for him.
There's also a subplot about the government wanting to subvert the invention for nefarious means and a terrorist that needs to be stopped. Oh, and there's also something supernatural going on - because Jake and the new office assistant, Madison, keep waking up screaming in the middle of the night with similar dreams.
Obviously, I'm not going to get into big spoilers.
Jake is a great leading man - and his obliviousness about the way women think is both hilarious and spot-on. Jake is a realistic character that is stuck between moving on and holding on to the wife he loved so dearly.
The problem with the story - the biggest one anyway - is the character of Madison.
You can kind of tell that a man wrote her - because she's not at all realistic to women readers. Forget the fact that she still lives with her parents, but the neediness she travels through life with couldn't possibly exist in a real person that didn't have severe mental problems.
I think the book excels when it focuses on Jake, Bodey, Teri and the science - but it flounders when it tries to build a romance between Jake and Madison. It's strained and forced.
Also, at the end of the book, there is a twist that is pretty much telegraphed from the first chapter. It wasn't surprising - and it was a little too much like the movie `Signs,' for my taste.
I do love the central endeavor of the book, though, and I know a lot of people that are as obsessed with death as they are with life - so they can relate to Jake and quest.
As an author, Hale is solid and the book doesn't have a lot of typos. Of those it does have, the one that bothered me the most was the substitution of the word "taught" for "taut." There aren't an abundance of them, though.
Ultimately, the book is well-written - and definitely worth a read - but it doesn't answer the questions I think most people expect to have answered for them by the end. Instead, it wraps things up in a nice little bow with a hint that things might not be all that they seem.
I recommend reading `Near Dark,' just don't bother trying to invest in the central romance. If you can separate the two, though, this is a solid little read.

Near death experiences fascinate me and I was looking forward to reading some fiction about it, for a change, instead of personal accounts and researchers' commentaries. Perhaps that's why I'm so disappointed in this book. I was eager for it to be a fun read. I would have settled for just minimally okay. Sorry. It isn't even quite that good. I have no idea how this book got so many 4 and 5 star reviews because it's barely a two-star for plotting, writing or characterizations. Dialogue gets a minus 5. Too bad that's not an option.

Boring, long conversations between characters about nothing slow the book to a crawl. I was willing to skim the copious pseudo-dialogue to get to the good parts, but I couldn't find the good parts. The protagonist's "research" into near death experiences (NDEs) is so implausible as to be laughable. I suppose most readers won't know enough about research to realize this, but it's such a huge flaw that it makes everything else seem all the more ridiculous, and really makes me think I'm generous to give it even two stars.

But the minimal star rating I've given isn't for the ridiculousness of it. I can suspend belief and thoroughly enjoy farfetched fiction if it's well done. This was about as far from well done as it gets. If I didn't have a personal policy against rating books one-star, that's where I'd have rated this.
