"Diana Pharaoh Francis has crafted a winning paranormal mystery that mixes sizzling sex, magic, and a decades old search for artifacts that could change their world."

—Jeanne Stein, Bestselling Author of The Anna Strong Chronicles

"Trace of Magic caught me up fast and pulled me in tight for a fun, action-and-sass adventure full of deadly magic and dangerous romance. Diana Pharaoh Francis delivers a downright terrific read."

—Devon Monk, nationally Bestselling Author of Hell Bent

Even the most powerful tracers can't track you if the magical trace you leave behind is too old. But I can track almost anything, even dead trace. That makes me a unicorn, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Loch Ness Monster all rolled into one. In a word, I am unique. A very special snowflake. And if anyone ever finds out, I'll be dead or a slave to one of the Tyet criminal factions.

Riley Hollis has quietly traced kidnapped children and quietly tipped the cops to their whereabouts one too many times. Now she's on the radar of Detective Clay Price, a cop in the pocket of a powerful magic Tyet faction. When he blackmails her into doing a dangerous trace for him, Riley will have to break every rule that keeps her safe. Or become a Tyet pawn in a deadly, magical war.

I really like the universe. The magic and the gangs all make sense and are interesting. And I love some of the other series by this author.

What I didn't like was the sex.

SPOILER ALERT**********

Riley gets shot. Two days and one healing spell later she is sleeping with a cop she has feared and despised for years. She cannot resist his charms at all. He lies to her and misleads her and she jumps his bones as soon as he gives her a smoldering glance. Hypothermia, magic backlash, physical injury...all mean nothing as soon as they lock eyes or lips.

I just didn't buy it. It was more like a telenovela as soon as he touched her skin. I don't mind adult scenes in grownup books, but it has to make sense in the story. This came real close to derailing the narrative. I was disgusted by her lack of resolve.

This is more of a 3.5 stars than a true four. The world and most of the characters and the writing are worth a five, but the main character is a two at best.

As an English professor in her other life, Diana Pharaoh Francis is a writer that leaves you free from worry in terms of the technicalities like grammar and punctuation so you can freely indulge in the story.
And what a story! In fact, in her usual fashion, Francis has built a world of magic that will pull you in and leave you wanting more.
*SPOILERS*
Riley:
She likes Price. She’s thought about him for a long time. She’s fought the attraction she knows shouldn’t happen. He’s a cop while she’s the girl from the “wrong side of the tracks”. But readers, this is voted A ROMANTIC TIMES TOP PICK! There is going to be some sex/romance! And yes, it happens. ONCE. And might I say, bravo, Ms. Francis! Well done on that scene! Whew!
Riley is a bit of a dichotomy in that she’s both strong in finding all the kids and yet she seemed really young and a bit foolishly immature or lax when it comes to her dad and not finding out about her past and we haven’t really seen much of that part of her. We’ve heard bit of it but we haven’t really SEEN her do anything about it actively—search for her past or her mom’s death so for now that is a passive thing for readers. It makes her seem bit weaker as a character for but as she grows through the book you can see her get stronger and see her make those decisions she needs to make. And you know in the next book, she’ll explode as a magician and as a character and woman.
Price:
A bit harder to nail down. He saw Riley for more than she was. He still has to make a choice. And he does dumb stuff. We still wonder if he’s going to double cross her because he’s been such a s*** with that other woman. There are some times we do want to kick him in the balls if he messes up. Not telling her about the ex until the last minute? Dumb ass move, dip s***.
The brother:
Ok, he’s a bad guy but he cares about Price. So he’s got some good guy s*** in him. So we can’t help but like him--maybe. And we think that there’s something in him that is redeemable and that somehow Riley can make him be something good. And that the three of them can kick some ass. Some real bad guy ass. IF HE PULLS HIS HEAD OUT OF HIS ASS.
All of this in a world that is cold, snowy, filled with magic, bad guys, bad drugs, and some cool as hell ways to kill, maim, and get inside peoples heads.
So the way I read it, her maturing in her magic, her relationship with Price and her seeing her relationship with her “dad” or family and coming to terms with it is all happening at the same time, a linear progression to--something. And Francis has set it all up to happen in the next book, not so much a cliffhanger as a progression in growth of characters and events.

We’re left them with the knowledge that Riley is going to kick some ass, that she’s developed her plan to kill, or use her skills to trace and kill and knock some heads together. Bam! Awesome world, characters, story, book. LOVED IT!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 such a disappointment! 31 août 2014

This was such a huge disappointment for me. At the end of the novel I had to really think to find the reason for my overall feeling of dissatisfaction. All the right plot elements were there but somehow the execution was just . . . off. On the plus side, there were no word crimes (grammar, spelling, or otherwise) committed here that I recall which also helped to make reading this story so pleasant.

I loved the heroine's powers, the secrets, the hot hero "recruiting" the heroine to find the clues and unravel the mystery. But each plot point --- whether the secrets of her powers, their romance, or the murder mysteries --- just seemed to unfold in a rather lukewarm way and was like a fizzle instead of a bang every time. Thinking back, I remember more about the anticipation when the scene was set up . . . and nothing much about the way it played out because it was so unmemorable.
How?! Why?! Was it pacing? Descriptions? Scene setting? Character dialogue? Probably all of the above. Just one of those things where the storytelling worked for another person but not for me.

It almost makes me more upset when a story is this close to good and fails to hit the mark than when it is just plain awful.

"You know, ever since I met you, I can't seem to keep my own clothes on. Why is that?"
Title: Trace of Magic
Series: The Diamond City Magic Novels Book #1
Author: Diana Pharaoh Francis
Rate: A
Thoughts: Trace of Magic starts off what has become one of my new favorite urban fantasy series - and this book definitely leaves you wanting more! I can't wait to get more from these characters and this whole intriguing world. In this alternate, magical universe, we have a world full of magical abilities, intrigue, subterfuge, deception, greed, etc. - and with Riley herself not even sure of the full scale of her powers, I can't wait to see where things go with this series. For book one in a new series, it is really off to a strong start, and this is the most excited I have been about a new author in urban fantasy in awhile.
For those wanting to get a feel for her works, I see the book similar to those along the lines of the Realm Walker series by Kathleen Collins and perhaps the Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance - if you enjoy those, I think this one might be right up your alley...:) There are definitely moments where it reminds me a bit of Kim Harrison's Hollow's series (although this series is definitely not on that scale yet)....particularly when it comes to Riley's creative uses for magic. I think this series really has a lot of potential....and Riley really has the potential to became a huge female character that those long-lasting type series are made out of. I can't wait to see what the next book brings!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Magically Written - The Series I Hope Never Ends 16 novembre 2014
Par Melissa Sawmiller - Publié sur Amazon.com

I will admit up front that Diana Pharoah Francis is one of my favorite authors. I love fantasy/sci-fi/urban fantasy but often the books available are the same (all vamps and werewolves)... and while I do enjoy some of those, what I love about Ms. Francis is that her books are unique. She creates vivid new worlds with unexpected magics and truly realistic characters. And she has never done it better than she did in this book. I couldn't put it down. I read through it in one sitting.

The story evolves so well that you get sucked in and feel the anticipation of the main character. You want her to have everything she wants. You get frustrated with her when she feels cornered or stuck. And nothing plays out exactly how you expect it to. Surprises and twists keep you guessing while your connection to the character keeps you hoping... masterfully written.

My only issue is that the sequel isn't out yet! :) It's going to be an amazing series and Ms. Francis has created herself a giant playground of possibilities for a long series and some great secondary characters that I would gladly follow in their own adventures.

I highly recommend this book. And once you're done with it, while you wait for the next, you can read all of her other writings b/c they are just as good.
