—Devon Monk, nationally Bestselling Author of Hell Bent

Even the most powerful tracers can't track you if the magical trace you leave behind is too old. But I can track almost anything, even dead trace. That makes me a unicorn, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Loch Ness Monster all rolled into one. In a word, I am unique. A very special snowflake. And if anyone ever finds out, I'll be dead or a slave to one of the Tyet criminal factions.

Riley Hollis has quietly traced kidnapped children and quietly tipped the cops to their whereabouts one too many times. Now she's on the radar of Detective Clay Price, a cop in the pocket of a powerful magic Tyet faction. When he blackmails her into doing a dangerous trace for him, Riley will have to break every rule that keeps her safe. Or become a Tyet pawn in a deadly, magical war.

I really like the universe. The magic and the gangs all make sense and are interesting. And I love some of the other series by this author.

What I didn't like was the sex.

SPOILER ALERT**********

Riley gets shot. Two days and one healing spell later she is sleeping with a cop she has feared and despised for years. She cannot resist his charms at all. He lies to her and misleads her and she jumps his bones as soon as he gives her a smoldering glance. Hypothermia, magic backlash, physical injury...all mean nothing as soon as they lock eyes or lips.

I just didn't buy it. It was more like a telenovela as soon as he touched her skin. I don't mind adult scenes in grownup books, but it has to make sense in the story. This came real close to derailing the narrative. I was disgusted by her lack of resolve.

This is more of a 3.5 stars than a true four. The world and most of the characters and the writing are worth a five, but the main character is a two at best.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Would have been better with less romance 15 novembre 2014
Par Shirley U Jest - Publié sur Amazon.com

This book couldn't decide if it was a romance or an urban fantasy. The problem with it was, the love bits were injected at key moments in the story, bringing the action to a halt. It's hard to feel the heroine is in immediate danger if she takes a nice long bath or indulges in some monkey lovin' with her new man right in the middle of a crisis.

There were also some mistakes and just plain unbelievable parts. Riley first says her mother died when she was five and her father remarried "a few years later." Further in, she says she was four and her stepsister was born just a year later. As far as sheer ridiculousness, there's a part where something precious and dangerous has been recovered. The author wants us to think that the hero, a police detective, wouldn't even look into the bag to see what the stuff was for the entire 24 hours the heroine is asleep. "I waited for you," he says. Apparently, despite their immediate peril, he sat around for a day not trying to find out anything new, not even looking at the evidence, until she wakes up. Argh.

There's also some pretty overused plotlines, like, "Oh, I hate him, he's everything I fight against, but damn he's just so hot I can't help myself." There's insta-love. The hero is a strong silent gorgeous hot alpha male, natch. In the LUV scenes, there's the predictable biting, her of his lip, him of her nipple (ouch), and of course he holds her hands over her head and won't let her move while he does all the work. because that's what we all secretly want, strong independent kick-ass woman or not.

If I seem annoyed, it's because I am. This book could have been so much better if it hadn't inserted those distracting, silly, moony-eyed moments right in the middle of the action. It made it hard to believe when Riley suddenly feels urgency to get back to trying to save someone's life and avoid the dangerous people after them. I just don't think you'd stop for a smooch and ardent declaration of love in public when people are actively trying to kill you.

I gave this book there stars for the ideas and world building. Riley story was so much more interesting than those hackneyed sappy bits, and I wanted to know more about her abilities and less about how much everything hurts (she gets beat up a lot), and how much she loves the hero. There was a better sorry in there that I would have liked to read.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 such a disappointment! 31 août 2014

This was such a huge disappointment for me. At the end of the novel I had to really think to find the reason for my overall feeling of dissatisfaction. All the right plot elements were there but somehow the execution was just . . . off. On the plus side, there were no word crimes (grammar, spelling, or otherwise) committed here that I recall which also helped to make reading this story so pleasant.

I loved the heroine's powers, the secrets, the hot hero "recruiting" the heroine to find the clues and unravel the mystery. But each plot point --- whether the secrets of her powers, their romance, or the murder mysteries --- just seemed to unfold in a rather lukewarm way and was like a fizzle instead of a bang every time. Thinking back, I remember more about the anticipation when the scene was set up . . . and nothing much about the way it played out because it was so unmemorable.
How?! Why?! Was it pacing? Descriptions? Scene setting? Character dialogue? Probably all of the above. Just one of those things where the storytelling worked for another person but not for me.

It almost makes me more upset when a story is this close to good and fails to hit the mark than when it is just plain awful.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantasy at its best. 29 octobre 2014

This is a wonderful 1st book in a series that combines magic, fantasy and love. Riley stays under the radar of the power "war lords" by pretending to be a low class tracer. If people knew how powerful she was, she'd soon be a slave, trapped by her love for her family. When Clay, a policeman owned by one of the Tyet powermongers hires her, he gets involved when her sister's boyfriend disappears. No one is sure who can trust who, snow storms that cripple the city and 6 ancient artifacts has all the power families scrambling for Riley and her power. Can't wait for part two of the Diamond City Magic series. Will also be looking for Diana Pharoh Francis' older books till the next one is out. Fantasy at it's best.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Bit of a slow start but worth keeping going and now looking for further books in the series please 15 novembre 2014

Bit slow starting but once underway a cool new Urban Fantasy heroine emerges. If you like Jennifer Estep's Gin Blanco you will love this book. Hopefully the next one in the series is out soon.

Other reviews outline the plot so I won't bother with that. The writing is excellent. The world building took a bit of getting used to as you have to fit today's slang and history into this diamond mining, Mafia like gangs, town dumped into America,. Some of the references in the book had me jumping on Google to find out what they were about but that's because I am not American.

Highly recommended reading for anyone who likes Urban Fantasy or Fantasy in general.
