Comme toute la série des princes marchands, c'est à peu près parfait. Intrigue passionnante et complexe, dimensions économiques et politiques, mondes parallèles. Ce que j'ai lu de mieux depuis des années.

Traders' War (2013) is the second SF omnibus in the Merchant Princes series, following The Bloodline Feud. This volume contains The Clan Corporate and The Merchant's War.

The Clan Corporate (2006) is the third novel in this series. Miriam has been working for the Clan as a courier. Now she has time off to recover. She runs some errands and then visits her mother.

Iris explains more about the braided marriage arrangements and the power base of the elder women. She tells Miriam that she has to establish their trust in order to assert any power within the Clan. Miriam says that she feels like an imposter playing a role.

They discuss Miriam's affair with Roland and her anger at Angbard. Her uncle is not responding to her requests to transit to New London. Iris points out her brother is very busy dealing with the Matthias betrayal.

Miriam is still having problems with hochsprache. Her communication difficulties are seen as signs of low intelligence. Iris strongly recommends that she work harder on learning the language and Miriam promises to put more effort into learning it.

Later Miriam receives an opened letter to Angbard that has been marked as Addressee Unknown and returned to her. She decides to change her mode of attack. Miriam drops in on Henryk for an unannounced visit.

Elsewhere, King John is interrupted in his afternoon avocation by an urgent intelligence briefing. The French have tested a corpuscular dissociation petard ahead of the former intelligence estimates. Now that the French have a working nuclear bomb, the British need to respond somehow.

Erasmus accompanies a handler and takes a report from their palace source. He passes the envelope on to a Leveler courier for delivery to the analysts. Then he goes for a meeting with Lady Margaret. She expresses a desire to meet Miriam.

In the USA, Mike and his partner are seconded to a new organization targeted at the Clan operations within the USA. Other federal agents aware of the information provided by Matthias are also gathered into this organization. Their initial briefing shows a Clan courier transiting out of a secure cell.

The Merchant's War (2007) is the fourth novel in this series. The Summer Palace is shattered and still smoking. Soldiers are searching the wreckage for bodies. The deaths of the King and Prince Creon are already known. The old aristocracy are gathering in Niejwein to swear loyalty to King Egon.

The new King is waging war against the Clan. At least three Clan leaders, including Baron Henryk, are also known to be dead. Egon starts raiding nearby Clan estates. He takes preventive measures to avoid Clan assassins.

Miriam transits to New Britain. Three beggars attack her, but they are weak and maimed. Her clothing is cut, but she is not injured.

She wishes to shelter within Erasmus's shop, but is far from Boston. She is also not properly dressed for New Britain and has no money. Yet she remembers the name and street address of Erasmus's friend in New London.

Miriam hails a hansom cab and rides to that address. She becomes aware that the place is a brothel, but gets a guard to pay the fare and asks to see Lady Bishop. The guard puts her in a bedroom within the house.

Lady Bishop interviews Miriam and is intrigued by her, but is still suspicious of the circumstances. She sends a telegram to Erasmus. After a hurried trip from Boston to New London, Erasmus verifies Miriam's identity and her prior service to the Levelers.

Miriam is very pleased to see Erasmus. She explains the coup in Niejwein and the business of the Clan. The Levelers provide her with papers and she returns to Boston with Erasmus.

Meanwhile, Mike works his way out of the Summer Palace through a side door and into the nearby woods. He is found by the Special Ops team and is lead away from the Palace. Then he steps into a mantrap and loses the use of a leg. The team splints and treats the wound.

Two of the team are killed in the firefight between Clan Security and Egon's troops, but one gets away. Mike is found by Clan Security just outside the palace grounds and is taken with them during the withdrawal. Olga finds him and realizes that he is from the USA. She and Iris smuggle him away from Clan Security.

The next installment in this omnibus sequence is The Revolution Trade.

Highly recommended for Stross fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of alternate worlds, political intrigue, and thwarted romance. Read and enjoy!

This is actually a re-edit and combining of the third and fourth books in the original Merchant Princes series -- thereby making it into a trilogy with three long books instead of a series of six short books, which is how the author originally intended it to be. As I wrote in my review of the first omnibus, if you enjoyed the original series and want to read it as the author intended, this book is worth picking up.

For that matter, if you didn't read the original series, I would still have no trouble recommending this series, which is the story of a business reporter who finds out that she is a princess in a family that have the ability to transport between alternate worlds -- and who are using this power to smuggle drugs into our world, and take the resultant profits to live a very comfortable life in their own world. Originally marketed as fantasy, this is really has more of a science fiction vibe, mixed in with heavy doses of economics and politics. On the latter, be advised that if you were a big fan of the Bush/Cheney presidency, you will probably not like the political tone of this book -- a VP who is very obviously Dick Cheney proves to be a major character in this series, and not in a good way.

One other note is that economist and Pulitzer prize winning NYT columnist Paul Krugman is a big fan of this series, which is probably one of the most unusual endorsements I've ever seen in science fiction.

So, if this and the other reviews are tempting you to read this series for the first time, go pick up a copy of the "Bloodline Feud", which is the first book in the Omnibus. As a side note, the third book isn't due out in the US until next year, but has been out for a while in Britain (and can be ordered from there).
