Ben Hirshberg is a 21 year old student, author, and entrepreneur who studies the art of living well. Born and bred in Seattle, WA, Ben likes to read, cook, run, travel, and throw convivial parties. Ben has PFT, FNS, and YES certifications through WITS and NASM and is in the process of becoming a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and achieving board certification in Holistic Nutrition by the National Association of Nutrition Professionals. He also writes regular columns for Paleo Magazine and is hoping to release a few more books in 2014. Ben wrote something smart and easy to understand. If you're lost on the dietary litterature or trying to build healthy habits, go for it.

Real living lifestyle overviews - An excellent read. 10 octobre 2014

With modern dysfunctional lifestyle problems dominating our news and trying to pick from fad fail after fad fail, psuedo science, and marketing interests this re-analysis of classic diet-lifestyles of "Blue Zone" super longevity communities nails it.
Eat local, shun processed, stay active and involved in what matters ( growing food & family), stay socially connected and honor your elders. Especially the wisdom they have to offer.

I don't write a lot of reviews, but I found this book to be especially interesting and informative. It hits the highlights of Weston A. Price and the Blue Zones, and it is especially helpful if you are new to this type of research and are considering adopting some new practices. You might want to read further for more detail, but this would be a good start.

I found this book to be very balanced in its view on healthy diets. The author clearly demonstrates that it is possible to be very healthy on very different diets, from high carbohydrate to high protein paleo. After years of trying to find the healthiest diet for me, this book confirmed and solidified my suspicion that there are more than one option on eating a healthy diet. There is more than enough choice for me to build myself a healthy diet out of whatever healthy options are available where I live or travel to. I can therefore choose those healthy options that are most enjoyable for me to eat and that make my body feel good. Right now some of that choice includes the lovely traditional portuguese cheese and the lovely salad vegetables available in Portugal.

A quick summary of traditional diets 14 novembre 2014

This was a quick read summarising a couple of author's books based on long living healthy people from around the world. I really liked the author's conclusions that's it's not about "eat this exact thing and live longer" it's more about don't be so fanatical and enjoy a wide variety of whole, real foods, move more and enjoy life with family and friends. What we do in life is as important as what we eat. For some this may not be good enough because I find that people really like to be told what to do so they can have someone to blame if it doesn't work like they think it should. The right answer is different to all of us as said by the author of this book and I think he's absolutely right. There is no magic macronutrient nor food that will change us. The ads promoting such things sound like snake oil. Eat whole foods, well raised and of the best quality we can. Don't graze all day. Move a lot. Socialize. Do something that makes you feel useful. I think we can learn a lot from that advice. Good book!

It gives a broad overview of many traditional diets consumed by varying people groups. This book is a refreshing antidote to the many fads screaming for our attention in the media. The biggest take away is to be healthy eat real non-processed foods and enjoy a rich purpose filled life.
