Présentation de l'éditeur

Humanity is losing the war. The once-mighty space navies have been crippled, officers and crew have been stretched to the limit and Earth herself has come under heavy attack. The end cannot be long delayed. For Admiral Smith and the crew of HMS Ark Royal, the stakes have never been so high.

The one hope is to make contact with alien factions that might oppose the war. But, as Ark Royal sets off on a desperate diplomatic mission, it rapidly becomes clear that there are both human and alien factions that wish to fight the war to the bitter end - and that her previous missions have sown the seeds of success ... or total failure.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Ending of a good Trilogy 11 juin 2014

Ark Royal was a really good book and one of Christopher's best books yet.

It has it all to me. Flawed characters, a hopeless situation, the under dogs and great military action in a realistic manner. But it was really on a micro personal ship type story level.

Book 2, was a great good continuation and a worthy sequel. Did it beat book 1? Nope but it was still great read, continuing to expand the universe. Introduce the aliens as more then a mysteries enemy, as well as explore the universe and the hopeless cause that human was in.

Book 3, Trafalgar Gambit, I felt, was as good as book 2. It really expanded on the aliens as well as the human factions. It breathed depth into the the world that is Ark Royal and as such I really got to know the universe well. It also tied up alot of loose ends and expanded on the humanity and flaws of all sides on a species level and a personal level. Ending in a realistic and suitable manner for all involved.

I did feel that it could be better, and that is because I am comparing it to Ark Royal (book 1). Also felt the story was rushed (as it had alot of content to cover) and could be expanded (especially on the personal char level) and that is because the Ark Royal universe, Admiral Smith and the rest of the Ark Royal characters are/were such great characters that I wanted a greater more awesome send off.

Christopher is a really good writer that does the micro person level really well (Book 1). He also does the more larger picture type stories well too (Book 2). What he did for this book 3 was to combine and tell the micro personal level as well as the larger picture at the same time. In this aspect I feel he can do better. And when he perfects it... look out.

The Trafalgar Gambit is a good book and worthy ending for the Ark Royal saga. It could have been really great but that does not detract from all that it is. It is a showcase that Christopher is a really good author that we all should keep an eye on as when he perfects his craft, he really will be someone to look out for,

Luckily for us, the Ark Royal universe is not at the end. And I cannot wait for more books by Christopher. Keep it up Sir.

PS:Note, I give 4 stars as I feel only the SUPER OMG EPIC books should be giving the top score of 5.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Nuttall Gets Better and Better 8 juin 2014

I very much enjoyed this trilogy. Nice conclusion, loose ends tied up nicely, and there is room to move on to other things if Chris wants to explore the universe further. I very much appreciate that he kept the story to just 3 entries. Any additions would have been bloated and redundant.

I was surprised, in a good way, with the direction that he took some of the characters. They weren't supermen without flaws and that is a nice change of pace in this genre.

Chris channeled his GRRM a bit in this one. But the deaths were not wanton and moved the story forward.

This series earned The Rhino Seal of Approval.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 That's a wrap! 5 juin 2014

With this book, Chris brings the, "Arc Royal," trilogy to a very satisfying conclusion. While other books may yet be set in this universe, as there is clearly more that could be written to explore the interaction between humans and the aliens, it seems unlikely that future stories will much involve the Arc Royal or its major characters.

Those who have read the first two books with pleasure will surely find, "The Trafalgar Gambit," well worth their time.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Too much "wrap it up and move on", needs more work. 9 juillet 2014

A little disappointing at first but then picked up speed. The important issues were resolved but there were several that were not. Towards the end you get the feeling that he just wants to 'wrap it up'. IMHO the last quarter of the book should be re-written. But, still you will finish the story as it is the end of the series.

I read all three books in this series. This book was probably the best one. The distinctly British flavor of the writing turns me off a bit, but that's a personal thing. I kept having to look up some of the words the author uses in order to discern the meaning. "Boffins" is one example but there are others. It's probably a flaw in my educational background that I didn't already know those words, but it is what it is. To be fair, that doesn't really detract from the story. What does detract from it, at least to me, is that the author repeats the same information multiple times. I found myself skipping over chunks of the story because I was once again being told about something I already knew. One "star" deducted for that. Don't get me wrong, it's an interesting story line and worth reading, but a little ponderous with all the repetition.
