Distinguishing Consciousness from Wisdom is a translation of the root verses of the Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje, accompanied by a line-by-line commentary by Thrangu Rinpoche, the foremost scholar of this tradition.

Rinpoche with his vast experience in meditation explains how the eight consciousnesses function and how they are transformed into the five wisdoms at enlightenment.

This is book on Buddhist psychology written 800 years ago by one of the greatest scholars and meditators of his time. Thrangu Rinpoche's very lucid commentary makes it clear that what Rangjung Dorje's text is extremely relevant and important to the meditator of today.

About the author

Thrangu Rinpoche is the foremost scholar of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism and the only person to hold the highest Kenchen degree of this lineage. He was asked by His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa to reconstruct and save the ancient Buddhist Kagyu teachings which were virtually destroyed in the 1959 Cultural Revolution in Tibet. Besides establishing what should be taught he has been the tutor of all four regents of the Karma Kagyu lineage.

More recently Thrangu Rinpoche been chosen by the Dalai Lama to be the tutor of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa.

Thrangu Rinpoche has been teaching Western students for two decades and has given teachings in over 25 countries. He is a holder of the Shentong tradition and is known for taking complex Buddhist teachings and making them accessible to Western students.
