A Tree of Knowledge - a quick introduction to the culture of Somalia31 mars 2014

What a nice surprise to learn that the first published works by a world-famous Canadian author were written in and about Somalia!
This is also the first book in English specifically about Somali poetry, the predominant communication and art form there for hundreds of years. Since the Somali alphabet and writing were created in 1971, the author had to tap into the purely oral activity, translate it into English and obtain assurance of the accuracy of that work, and then compose and publish.
She is generous and informative about the strong support by artists and linguists, including her expectation of significant improvement by others whose expertise was growing. This has been the case, as shown in extensive literature in several languages, including others available through Amazon: "heeloy" and "An Anthology of Somali Poetry".
Her work was constrained by her gender - in accordance with the cultural bias, all of the poems cited are by male poets. The separate realm of female poets was not accessible to her.
Beyond the very readable and fairly short poetry, she provides many informative and interesting perspectives on the culture and history of the region.
