4.0 étoiles sur 5 Faced-paced, steamy romantic suspense 21 avril 2012

Format:Format Kindle
The book starts with Elizabeth arriving at the home of a major criminal because, once again, her brother Benny is in trouble and has called her for help. He owes Orlando (the major criminal) a bunch of money and Orlando is willing to let Elizabeth trade 6 months of her life in exchange. When she refuses, things get physical until Porter busts in to save the day.

This is the type of romance I adore. Smart heroine, loyal to her family. Strong hero, battling between what his mind says is right and what his heart tells him. I found Elizabeth's continuing loyalty to her brother (who is without a doubt a screwup) very believable, especially when their past is revealed. Benny saved her from something horrific as a child, something that left him emotionally scarred, and she refuses to give up on him no matter how much logic says she should. This loyalty is what ended Elizabeth's brief relationship with Porter. He wasn't willing to stand back while she dropped everything to pull her brother out of dangerous situations.

The chemistry sparked between Elizabeth and Porter from chapter one and continued to build. I loved that build up. They didn't just dismiss their earlier issues, they talked them out and got to know each other better and because of that, I believed in their happily ever after by the end.

This book is non-stop action. Guns, gangs, stuff blowing up, a couple on the run through Miami. Very fast paced with little downtime.

The only issue I had was how naive Elizabeth seemed during the first half of the book. She constantly argued she wasn't in danger, even after a gang vandalized her lawn in an attempt to scare her. She believed that since it was her brother that owed the money, Orlando had no reason to come after her. This is a woman who has repeatedly dragged her brother out of crack houses and other dangers AND she is the systems manager at a security firm. With her background, that level of naïveté rang a little false.

Overall, No One to Trust was a faced-paced, steamy romantic suspense with quite a bit of emotional depth. I would recommend it to any fan of the genre.

My Review:
I just really love the way Katie Reus writes romantic suspense. This book takes place in the heart of Miami. Lizzy works at one of the top security firms in the country, but she doesn't want her boss or any of his over-protective brothers to know how truly messed up her brother Benny is. A few months ago, she broke up with Porter because he couldn't accept her brother's presence in her life. So when Benny calls for help, Lizzy rushes to his aid and headlong into some serious trouble with the Miami crime boss. Luckily, Porter had a feeling that something wasn't right, so he had a tracker on her.

This book is nonstop heartstopping action from page one and I really did not ever want to put it down. Such a mistake to start this book on one of my busiest days of this year...hehe.

This was a different type of relationship from what you normally find in romance novels. Porter and Lizzy dated for a couple of months before she broke it off, but they were never intimate. That happened a few months before the book takes place. They may not be an item anymore, but that doesn't change the fact that they are incredibly drawn to each other. As it becomes obvious, that Lizzy is in incredible danger, Porter refuses to leave her side....and yes, he's a sexy marine. *sigh* Really, really good chemistry here!

There's never any doubt who the bad guys are in this book. What is in doubt or unknown is why Lizzy insists on protecting Benny even though he screws up over and over again. I had an idea, but when it came out, I have to admit, I was shocked. I love that in a book!

Overall this was just a fabulous read. 45,000 words is just an awesome size. It was enough of a read that I was fully satisfied with the story, but not so long that I became entirely bogged down with a huge, long book. It was good!!!

Elizabeth Martinez broke it off with ex-boyfriend Porter Caldwell after only a month because he didn't approve of her always bailing her brother, Benny, out of trouble. But Elizabeth's whole family has turned their backs on him and she's the only one Benny has left, plus he helped her when no one else would so Elizabeth refuses to give up on him. When Elizabeth finds herself in the middle of a dangerous drug lord's dealings though, thanks to her brother, she is shocked to see Porter racing to her rescue. Porter regrets letting Lizzy go in the first place and has been keeping an eye out for her ever since. He's not about to make the same mistake twice and when a local gangs sets out for Elizabeth's blood he is determined to keep her closer than ever.

Porter is an ex-marine and his family owns a security firm so you know he is going to be all alpha. Sexy, stubborn, protective and yes, sometimes domineering he'll do anything and everything to keep Lizzy safe but he doesn't suffocate her which I loved. Sometimes alpha male characters can get a bit stifling. On the run and hiding out from place to place, Porter and Lizzy realize that the chemistry between them still sizzles. Lizzy is loyal almost to a fault but strong and smart. I really enjoyed both of these main characters as well as the secondary ones, I hope to see more from the latter in the future! Though the attraction is still there between Lizzy & Porter, with yummy tension and smoking love scenes, so are their past issues and it was great to see those worked through instead of just pushed aside for the sake of a HEA. Suspense is heaped onto every page with Benny's dealings, Lizzy's past, criminal & political intrigue, gang violence and more. No One to Trust moved at a fast pace with lots of action leaving you to wonder, what will happen next, after each page. All leading up to a shocking conclusion that thrilled!

Fun and believable characters with a fast-paced and exciting story line No One to Trust is a recommended read to romance and romantic suspense fans everywhere. Another great story from author Katie Reus, whom I adore!

This was a good story. I liked Elizabeth and Porter but Elizabeth did have some frustrating qualities at times. I actually read book #2 in the series first and I liked it enough that it prompted me to give this book a try.

Elizabeth (Lizzy) is a computer specialist at Red Stone Security. Lizzy has rather famous doctors as parents and her family has money and a good reputation. Her bother Benny is the black sheep of the family though due to some bad things happen to him as a kid which has made him a rather unstable adult. Lizzy's parents have written Benny off but Lizzy loves him and never will.

Porter works for Red Stone Security with part of his family (his father owns the company). Porter spent years in the military and is very skilled at what he does. Porter and Lizzy dated for about a month and Porter really liked her. Unfortunately he let his annoyance show at her dogged insistence to backing up Benny when his problems are getting worse and put her in danger. Lizzy broke up with him and Porter's been trying to move on with little luck.

Lizzy gets called by Benny to pick her up and ends up in the home of a very bad man. He tells her that Benny owes him 100k. She has 1 week to come up with it or she can work it off in his bed for 6 months (Ick!). Just when the bad guy is about to push things, Porter comes charging in and saves Lizzy and Benny and takes them to safety. The bad guy apparently has aims to get Lizzy for more than just 6 months and intends to use Benny to get to her because everyone knows Lizzy has no sense when it come to Benny and she'd do anything to save him. Lizzy isn't thrilled to be stuck with Porter helping her and tries to get him to go after the initial save but Porter isn't going anywhere and quickly makes things clear. Benny disappears and Lizzy and Porter are left trying to scramble to stay out of the grasp of a very determined bad guy. While they're trying to stay alive, the attraction between Porter and Lizzy is growing stronger and they have some back and forth moments as they keep coming together but then keep trying to tell themselves it's a bad idea. After a decent amount of drama and action, things do work out with a rather surprising ending and Lizzy and Porter get their HEA together.

This was a good story. Porter was a very good hero. A little bossy but not an alpha-hole and I liked him. Lizzy was alright but she did have an enabling blind spot about her brother that got annoying at times, especially when she used it as an excuse to push away others because they couldn't understand it. Fortunately, Lizzy didn't make any TSTL moves and that helped a lot. Overall I liked this story. It wasn't great and if I hadn't read book #2 in the series already I might not have tried more of the series. But since I have read book #2 and liked it better it's likely I'll try more in the series and see if I like them better as well. :D

* note - I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a good job.

I wasn't a big fan of Lizzy's...I'm not sure about this trend of female characters that just do not listen to reason, that hold out on the people helping them, that take risks with their own lives and the lives of others all for the sake of their independence or because they don't like being told what to do, but I kind of really hate it.
I mean, my brother gets beaten within an inch of his life by a drug lord that propositioned me right before hitting me and then setting my lawn on fire...My security tells me to stay in the house, guess what? I would stay in the damn house!
Anyhoo...that was a star-crusher for me.
I did like Porter, a good blend of competent, hot and sweet.
Benny...oh Benny...I love you. I did like the relationship between Benny and Lizzy, enabling and all.
Overall, quick sweet read.
I hear the stories get better so I may try another one later.
