Thanks to this book, I have a brand-spankin' new Tumblr account. If ever there was someone who is tech challenged, it is I. When I found out I could use Tumblr for more than just a text blog --- more like a personal website without having to build and pay for one ---- I was ready to give it a try.

Tumblr for Dummies had its work cut out for it, that's for sure. Even with the very clear, step-by-step directions, with diagrams, screen shots, additional tips and options for advanced students, (HA!)it took me several hours to get up and running. Of course, it did take a long time for me to choose all the personalizing features. I tried every color combination on an array of templates before I settled on the one I wanted.

Once I got the basics in place, it was time to add some content. That was fun. I wanted to make this the platform for the novels I write and all things writing. I wrote a blog post, added a page, put up some pictures, added a link to an article. I wanted to try out most of the buttons just because. No videos yet, but someday...

I don't claim to have it all figured out yet, but I will tell you this: if you are a beginner and want to explore Tumblr, use this book. I had tried it once without this guide and got nowhere. This made my effort a success. See for yourself at rotalady.tumblr.com

Tumblr for Dummies is a terrific book for anyone interested in starting or maintaining a Tumblr account. The book walks the reader through the steps of setting up a new account by offering tidbits, facts, and suggestions that are essential to the Tumblr user.
As the book progresses, it explores all sorts of information useful to anyone from beginner status to a seasoned pro, making this book a handy reference guide. The book can be read either cover-to-cover or by going directly to a specific chapter of interest.
I am new to Tumblr and Tumblr for Dummies made it easy for me to set up a new account. The book gives information that is not available by simply following sign-up instructions on the Tumblr website. Using the book, I liked the fact that I was not only following the steps, but I was also learning all of the capabilities associated with each step.
Tumblr for Dummies offers a much more in-depth look at Tumblr while keeping things simple. The author, Sue Jenkins, writes in a clear manner and covers all the bases. It is as if she is sitting beside you guiding you through each step. Jenkins addresses every topic imaginable leaving the reader with not one unanswered question. While the book is quite thorough, it is equally as concise. There are no unnecessary segments or long-winded explanations. Topics are presented very clearly and the book is full of visual examples as well.
In Chapter 10, Ten Useful Third-Party Apps for Tumblr, it is obvious that Jenkins knows her stuff as she presents useful information about getting more out of your Tumblr account through the use of apps. This chapter was of particular interest to me because I had little knowledge of the apps and would probably still be in the dark if not for this book.
I cannot stress enough how useful this book is to a Tumblr user. Whether you are a novice or a pro, you will not be disappointed. Tumblr for Dummies truly is a must-have.

From Wikipedia --

Tumblr is a micro-blogging platform and social networking website, owned and operated by Tumblr, Inc. The service allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog, named a "tumblelog". Users can follow other users' blogs, as well as make their blogs private. Much of the website's features are accessed from the "dashboard" interface, where the option to post content and posts of followed blogs appear.

As of February 27, 2012, Tumblr had over 46.2 million blogs. According to comScore, it scored 13.4 million unique visitors in the U.S. in July 2011--up 218% from July 2010. Its headquarters is located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

Tumblr was launched on April 27, 2007 by David Karp. Marco Arment served as the lead developer, though he left the company in 2010 to focus on Instapaper. Within two weeks of its launch, the service had gained 75,000 users.

With Tumblr's 2009 acquisition of Tumblerette, an Apple Inc. App Store application created by Jeff Rock and Garrett Ross, the service launched its official iPhone app. The site became available to BlackBerry smartphones on April 17, 2010 via a Mobelux application in the BlackBerry App World.

As of February 27, 2012, Tumblr had over 46.2 million blogs and more than 18 billion total posts. As of September 2011, the website receives more than 13 billion views per month. As of July 2010, the site receives 25,000 new users each day and as of September 2011, 40 million posts are created on the site each day. An analysis by of shares through their service in 2011 noted that Tumblr sharing had increased by 1299.5%.

The service is most popular with the teen and college-aged user segments; exactly one half of Tumblr's visitor base is under the age of 25. As of 2009, Tumblr had an 85% retention rate, compared with 40% for Twitter.

I found out from struggling to probe the depths of some other sites that probably the best way to save time and take advantage of TUMBLR's great features is to add TUMBLR FOR DUMMIES to your must read list. It makes setting up a variety of different kinds of content blogs as easy as pie. Good stuff. Highly recommended!

Much of what a noncommercial user wants to know how to do on tumblr is hard to find in this book --and since i bought the online kindle version from Amazon, the diagrams of the symbols (for ex figure1-3) were so tiny as to be impossible to see and didnt match where they were on tumblr for kindle or iphone. Then they would use these figures with their miniscule and baffling symbols in explaining how to make a change to your tumblr.

The one positive was: It took you pretty smoothly thru the steps if you were just installing your tumblr account for the first time if you were using a PC. but as far as making simple changes on an existing account it was a labyrinth of confusion.
All i wanted to know was how to change my avatar and how to change the order of the images I've posted. I finally found the first answer after much searching. The second question i still havent found. Now Im trying to get rid of an irritating "theme" and go back to "Untitled" status where i started from and i havent found out how to do that either.

Much of the book is not designed for real dummies like me but for amateur web site designers --it is full of jargon --terms like CSS, domains and url that is baffling to me. I didnt find the tips that helpful either. because they referred back to the figures that are impossible to see or to the symbols that are not in the same place on my kindle.
This book may be very helpful to someone who is already familiar with the tumblr language but for me I found more answers by just typing my question written in ordinary English onto my PC browser and then googling it up than what i found trying to use this book.
