Even if sometimes, it's difficult for me (french maternal language) to understand subtleties, it's quiet a good guide to understand Google and it's rules...

Tout le monde a entendu parler de Google Adwords mais qui a pris conscience de ce que l'on pouvait en faire ?

Late last week I posted a note on Perry Marshall's Facebook page letting him know what I got from a previous version of this book. He asked me to share here. I don't normally post Amazon reviews, but based on what this book has been worth to me over the past few years, I thought it would only be right to make an exception.

I had the first edition of the Ultimate Guide To Google AdWords at a previous job. When I took over their AdWords, we were spending about $30k a month to get $30k a month in sales. Using many of the techniques outlined in this book, I was able to drop the spending to around $10k - $15k per month. Sales went up, ranging between $30k and $45k per month. The spread there, from a little investment in this book, was as much as $30-$35k per month in profits. And I really just scratched the surface in what I implemented out of the book. Sure, it wasn't all this book (the FTC wants you to know this). I did a lot of work to make it happen. And I was studying a lot of marketing stuff at the time (still do, all the time). But the specific techniques in this book played a huge part in the increased profits. Granted, that wasn't all my money, but it did help me more than double my personal compensation over about 5 years in that job.

I've also used the techniques from Perry's book in my own projects. The numbers are smaller, but I consistently get a 2- or 3-to-1 return on advertising investment in AdWords. Without the info I got from Perry and Bryan in this book, it'd probably be a lot smaller, even negative. I've set up campaigns years ago that still generate as much as a couple hundred in sales a month without any work on my part.

This is the best book on AdWords, period.

Not only that, it's a dang good book on Internet Marketing. If I had to tell someone to get one single book they could use as a manual for how to build an Internet Marketing strategy that would have a high probability of being profitable, I'd say buy this book. Because it covers it all -- it's not just AdWords. It's how to get traffic to your site, and how to convert them into buyers once they get there. Sure, it can't cover everything. But it does a great job in pointing you to where you need to go and what you need to go to generate profits from the internet.

That's why it's one of my most recommended books for internet related marketing education. Not just AdWords. And why I think just about anybody involved with selling things online needs a copy of this book.

It's why I've recommended it personally at least a dozen times, and why -- when I bought this latest edition for my bookshelf -- I bought the first of what could be many "giveaway" copies as well.

If you're reading this review, I bet it's because you're interested in the book but haven't bought yet.

Get off your duff. Buy the book. Amazon probably already has your billing and shipping addresses, plus your credit card number. Just hit "add to cart" and breeze right through the checkout process. Get it, and read it with a highlighter. Start putting what you learn to use immediately. You will not be disappointed.

I have no financial interest in making this recommendation -- I don't even know Perry personally (not yet, at least). But I firmly believe it is the right decision -- and that's why I'm putting my name to it in such a public forum. So what are you waiting for? :)

The biggest compliment I can give this book is that the 1st edition changed the course of my professional career. Using the foundation I got from that book in AdWords, I left the job I was in and opened up a company focused on helping business owners create and manage their own AdWords accounts. That was 5 years ago and not a day goes by that I don't apply the principles laid out in the 1st edition to campaigns I manage for clients.

What that 1st version did so well and the 3rd version does even better is makes sure the reader understands the underlying principles and strategies of AdWords in an entertaining, easy-to-read manner. Yes, it lays out the technical aspects of getting your campaign up and running which is important. But the technical stuff you can learn anywhere. What really separates the winners from the losers in AdWords is applying it strategically to meet your marketing objectives. I've found no one who does that better than Perry and Todd.

Whether you're just getting started with AdWords or have been using it for a while, this book is a must-have on your bookshelf and well worth the small investment of time and money.

I'm often asked by peers in my niche how I manage to rank so well in the search engines and not go broke using Google's PPC AdWords Program. Well, there are a couple of reasons:

1) I've been subscribing to Perry Marshall's Newsletters since 2003. I've read every one of his books. I listen-in on all the conference calls he organizes. And finally, I IMPLEMENT his strategies and tactics. He and Bryan Todd have been offering their insight into "playing the Google AdWords game" for years. Not only do they "talk-the-talk" but they "walk-the-walk."In Man and Superman, 1903, George Bernard Shaw suggested that:

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."

It's obvious to anyone who reads, "The Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" by Marshall and Todd that these guys can do both!

2) The new chapters on "The Dark Side of Google" were of particular interest to me. I, and more than a few of my clients, have experienced the wrath of Google. Again, Marshall & Todd do a brilliant job of explaining this phenomena and how to deal with it.

3)The previous editions to "The Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" by Marshall and Todd were jamb-packed with additional resources and tools. The 3rd edition goes even farther in this regard.

"The Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" lists for $24.95. Only a fool would continue to run Google AdWords campaigns and NOT invest in, study and implement the ideas in it. And no, you'll not find an affiliate link to Amazon here. Just get their book!

This is a great product. It is absolutely packed with great information, and case studies to back that information.

I didn't give it 5 stars because it tends to be a little wordy, repetitive, and unstructured. I'm a software developer, so I'm used to reading technical manuals. In a technical manual, I often have to re-read the same line repeatedly to fully understand it. This book has the opposite effect. Often I go for pages without finding new information. Each time I've encountered this situation I continue, and within a few pages I find another brilliant nugget of information nestled between pages of fluff.

Perry and friends could take a lot of the sales talk out of this book and create a really excellent, concise reference.

The book mentions there isn't really much to Adwords, when compared to more traditional subjects, such as Computer Science. I suspect Perry is desperately trying to meet some word count to give the book perceived credibility. I believe "less is more". Just something to think about.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Adwords. It contains gobs of time saving, money making information. The format might be a little wonky, but it's worth it every penny. I wish I had this back in 2008 during some of my previous projects. If I did, those projects might have turned out very different.

If you like this book, I also recommend reading, The Lean Startup, by Eric Ries. It is interesting how much overlap there is between Perry's strategy and Eric Ries' strategy. I suspect they're on to something.

This is probably a great book on how to run a Google ad campaign, but only a few pages in I find that the book is outdated already because Google has changed the procedure for setting up an Adwords campaign. None of the actual windows for setting up a campaign look the same as in the book and due to the changes, some of the settings and keyword tools are hard to find and manage. When the next edition comes out, I'm sure the book will be very useful (for a while!) but until then I can't recommend this book for a complete newbie. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any newer book that addresses the changes in Google Adwords, so this one is probably still the best choice.
