My favorite Spider-Man series! 29 juin 2012

First off, let me say that I've played the video game "Ultimate Spider-Man" before I knew it was a comic book series. It was my favorite Spider-Man game ever. When I found out it was a comic book series, I decided to buy it and give it a go. This is a really good series. This omnibus collects Ultimate Spider-Man #1-39 and 1/2. It retells Spider-Man's origin and includes some of the best villains to ever appear in comics, including Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, and my personal favorite, Venom. The Green Goblin is i bit different in this series because he doesn't ride around on a glider, but looks more like a bald Hulk with horns and a purple robe. I especially love the art in this series. It has a new art look, different from "The Amazing Spider-Man". It also has a different layout, to fit in today's comic book style. I highly recommend this series for any Spider-Man fan!

Superior to all other formats. 22 septembre 2012

First off, I would like to say that the Marvel Omnibus format has to be my favorite, compared to all other trades Marvel releases.
Now the review can begin.
This book is a HEAVY faux-leather book that is fantastically bound and well made. The cover is a crimson red with a distinctive silver "Ultimate Spider-man" insignia on the front, this cover is subtle yet dignified. The Spine of the book has the "Marvel Omnibus" logo on the top with the title and creative team on the side, this is all in the same silver tone as the insignia on the cover. This book is physically superior to most other formats, and graciously outshines the paperback trades.

The dust jacket features a gallery of all the covers in this volume, which is a nice touch.

As for the content of the book itself, the content is a perfect partner to the aesthetic appeal of this volume.
Ultimate Spider-man has the fantastic creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. Bendis is at his best in this series and is able to wonderfully capture the spirit of Spidey, from his guilt to his quips directed at his foes. As for Bagley, the art is great at capturing the swell of these epic conflicts between our young hero and his foes. Not only that but Bagley is also able to capture the individual spectrum of emotions for each character, from Kraven to MJ.

This volume collects some of young Peter's most interesting conflicts. The first arc establishes fan-favorite Norman Osborn as possibly Spider-man's most dangerous foe. As difficult as it would seem to usurp this as the supreme arc in the story, the series continues to improve as you read. The rouges gallery given and improved upon include: Electro, Doc Ock, Kingpin, Kraven the Hunter and more. The final arc in this volume is a fitting climax for the series. Venom, who has been one of the most popular villains in Spider-man history, gets his ultimate universe origin at the end of this volume and gives us a wonderful insight into the emotions of our hero, and those he loves.

At the end of the book there is a section dedicated to sketches and creator interview and even deleted scenes, to my knowledge this volume is the only way to get these awesome extras.

Overall I would say that this volume is a must buy for someone who is a fan of the series or someone who just wants to find somewhere to start reading. The price listed by Amazon is extremely reasonable and makes this definitely worth purchasing.

A Great Start 3 septembre 2012

Now, I want to say something here: I'm technically reviewing only the chapters contained in this book, not the book itself.
It might be that this book is indeed the same as the Barnes and Noble Omnibus I got, complete with some behind the scenes stuff between the 3 collected volumes, but I don't know for certain. If it does, you'll no doubt enjoy Bendis' comments once you finish an arc up, but if not, you're not missing out too badly.

As for the actual comics contained in this massive book, they will take you through an amazing journey into the Ultimate Marvel universe that you won't forget. It's a far less cluttered world than the regular Marvel universe where everyone is still figuring out their own roles in it, and this book is the perfect entryway to this world.

The story itself took me on something of an emotional journey which I really didn't expect. My first reading, a lot of the earlier parts of the book disappointed me with how slow things were going considering how used to being dropped right into the hectic action when opening up most comics. However, when I finally got over that unreasonable expectation and let myself enjoy the book after being assured things did pick up, I realized just how well Bendis lays out his groundwork for stories. Those earlier, slower chapters ended up making Uncle Ben's death hurt all the more, show just how much the classic lesson of great power and great responsibility was necessary for a Peter Parker who was clearly at a crossroads between hero and villain after being given the short end of the stick all his life, and really justify why Eddie Brock breaks down later on.

Sure, the pacing sometimes causes problems, such as how the first Goblin arc kind of ends suddenly as if it feels like there was a piece missing between his creation and his attack (though the second Goblin arc featuring Norman Osborn's point of view as well as just how villainous he can be makes up for this midway through the book). In addition, while most reoccuring characters are given plenty of respect (a few even figuring out Peter's secret), the ones that don't turn out to be more than they first appear (such as Flash) stand out a bit too much, though there are thankfully very few of these flat characters.

This book is a collection of 3 very strong volumes that make up the beginning of what has so far been a great series. If you're looking to get into a series, find there's a bit too much of a barrier for entry into the main Marvel world, or appreciate a good story about a kid who is trying to figure out how he fits into a changing world, pick this book up. Sure it may be a bit pricy, but it'll no doubt save you some trouble when you find yourself hunting down more of the series after you get hooked.

Excellent pick up 5 septembre 2012

A great book for those who haven't started reading Ultimate Spiderman and for those who have read them but may have them in scattered formats. The writing of Bendis is excellent. He does a great job creating a world full of pitfalls and triumphs, but most importantly where the reader cares about the characters. The art is stunning and this format really has the color jump off the page. The binding of the book itself appears to be well put together and durable.

Can't recommend this book enough, to fans of Spider-Man. Brian Bendis writes a great Peter Parker, giving this series a lot of heart. Great Story, great art, great value.
