Présentation de l'éditeur

"Mom always told me there are two kinds of love in this world: the steady breeze and the hurricane. Emerson Ray was my hurricane..."

Juliet McKenzie was an innocent eighteen-year old when she spent the summer in Beachwood Bay--and fell head over heels in love with Emerson. Complicated, intense Emerson, the local bad boy. His blue eyes hid dark secrets, and just one touch could set Juliet ablaze. Their love was demanding and all-consuming, but when summer ended, tragedy tore them apart. Juliet swore she'd never go back, and she's kept that promise... Until now.

Four years later, Juliet's done her best to rebuild the wreckage of her shattered life. She's got a great boyfriend, and a steady job planned after she graduates. Returning to Beachwood to pack up her family's beach house to prepare it for sale, Juliet is determined that nothing will stand in the way of her future. But one look from Emerson, and all her old desire comes flooding back. He let her go once, but this time, he's not giving up without a fight. And Emerson fights dirty.

A heartbreaking history. An unstoppable passion. Torn between her past and future, Juliet struggles to separate love from desire. But will they find a way to overcome their tragic secrets--together? And after so much damage has been done, can a love remain unbroken?

Une histoire sympathique, plutôt bien écrite, mais qui s'adresse plus à un public "harlequin" qu'à des adolescents contrairement à l'impression que donne la couverture.

Wow!! I read this ARC by request of the author without much knowledge of the plot and thank goodness she asked me to. I would have hated to miss out on such a great romance story. Emerson and Juliet meet the summer after she graduates from high school. What Juliet thinks will be a boring summer away from her friends ends up being a summer of love, anger, sadness and regret.

Now 4 years later, Juliet thinks she is finally over losing two people she loved dearly that summer. She feels like her life is back on track and her future is all planned out until she has to go back to Cedar Cove to clean out their old vacation home. Just being back in that town brings back so many memories. But then seeing Emerson for the first time since she left, makes her question everything she thought was perfect in her life. And boy oh boy does he make quite a comeback into her life!! The man he is now, is nothing like the guy she remembers from 4 years ago ;)

This is a story about that first real love being your true love. A love that you can never forget, even if you pretend to move on.

"You're mine." He growls, his breath hot against my face. My legs give way, and he holds me up gripping my jaw so I have no choice but to stare up into his eyes, To lose myself in them. "You're mine," he says again fiercely. "Not his, not anyone else's. You can try and pretend you don't feel it, but you do. You'll always be mine."

Who would be able to say no to that?!?! No one...exactly! But, can they work through their past experiences and make it work??

I loved both Emerson and Juliet's characters. Juliet was strong!! She struggled but even with all she had been through and all the secrets she was keeping, she stayed strong and did what she felt was right for the people around her. I loved that there wasn't that bouncing back and forth with her. She knew what was in her heart and she went with it even if it tore her apart at times. My heart broke for her as she struggled to figure out what to do.

And then we have Emerson. I LOVE that name!! He was a little more complicated than Juliet but he thought he was doing the right thing. He confused me at times but I was POSITIVE that he had a good heart. I knew his love for Juliet was overwhelming and I was anxiously reading my butt off to get to the part that I knew had to be coming.

I can honestly say that there was nothing about this story that bothered me :) I enjoyed every minute of it and had a hard time putting it down. It has the perfect mix of angst, sadness, romance and even some steamy scenes. Loved those steamy scenes ;) I am so thankful to Melody for sharing this story with me and I HIGHLY recommend it!! Seriously...go buy it people!!

1.0 étoiles sur 5 So very disappointed 9 août 2013

I was so looking forward to reading this book. I've heard such great things - and the summary sounded amazing. Second-chance stories are one of my favorite types of romances. I really wasn't even nervous at all to read Unbroken, despite it being New Adult. (I have extreme love and hatred for the genre; it's very touch and go.) But. UGH! I just really didn't like very much at all about this book.

First of all, there needs to be more backstory, more memories of Juliet and Emerson's past. I only remember there being two scenes Juliet remembers that didn't involve sex. The first is located toward the beginning of the book, about the first interaction she had with Emerson. I have no idea how they went from point A to point B; it's just the first few minutes of their introduction. The second is how they broke up. Did you catch that about the NOT involving sex? Yeah. Because that is basically what this whole book is about. It's not that there is sex on nearly every page, but there sure are PLENTY of pages with Juliet thinking about sex with Emerson. My God. Where was this amazing love story? Basically, Juliet gets into town, runs into Emerson the first night, and is almost immediately weak in the knees, practically vibrating with want for him. No flashes of sweet romance and heartbreak mixed in with the heated connection of lust and longing - you know, the kind of memories that come from "hurricane" style romances. Nope.

I seriously think the woman might need to have her hormone levels checked. She is worse than a teenager! Bottom line: story needs much more development. I'm fairly certain you could wrap up all the dialogue the two of them share in about 5 pages (meaningful dialogue would take up half of that, maybe).

***ARC received by author for review purposes***
I'm such as sucker for rekindled romances and NA books that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to review this book. It doesn't help that the cover was so pretty and eye-catching either. Even though I just got this a couple of days ago and my TBR pile is sky-high, I just had to sneak it in my reading pile. I was hooked from the very beginning and found it hard to put it down when I should be other things like working. (ugh!)

4 years after the death of her mother, Jules goes back to Cedar Cove to pack up their family's beach house that he dad is selling. Since her dad or sister don't care about saving any of her mother's stuff, Jules takes it upon herself to do the task. Or so she says. She tries to convince herself that going back has nothing to do with Emerson, her ex. 4 years ago Juliet and Emerson fell head over heels in love. The kind of passionate, all consuming love. Jules and Emerson even had plans for a future together. Until the day Emerson breaks her heart. Her mother's death and Emerson's betrayal is too much for Juliet to take so she leaves and tries her best to move on from Emerson. It takes her a while but she ends up meeting and starts a relationship with Daniel (her current boyfriend). But going back to Cedar Point is messing with Juliet's head and emotions. From her first encounter with Emerson, old feelings start to resurface and she realizes that although Daniel may seem like the perfect guy, her heart has always belonged to Emerson. Juliet and Emerson start falling back into their intense relationship. Juliet was a very likeable character. She has a really messed up family and she's been living in a lie most of her life. Once she made up her mind about what she wants, she isn't afraid to go after it and I really loved that about her. Although Emerson came off as a jerk sometimes, I totally saw through him and understood that he said some of the things he did because he was hurt and trying to protect himself and Jules. I loved the chemistry between these two, it was intense and holy hell was it hot! That backroom bar scene will be in my favorites :)

For those of you who don't like love triangles or books about cheating, this book isn't about any of those things. The situation was handled very well. I loved that we got to hear the story from the present tense, but we also got flashback of their relationship 4 years ago and how things went bad. It was very easy to get sucked in the story and my only complaint would be that I wish it were a little bit longer. Not that the story needed more, I just really enjoyed it and would have liked to read more about these two. I also wish we would have gotten Emerson's POV, but I hope for the guy's POV in every book so that's kind of a moot point. I noticed this is part of a series and I am insanely curious to know if the next book will also be about them or someone else. Maybe Juliet's best friend, Daniel, Emerson's little sister, Garrett the bartender? Heck, I kind of want to know Juliet's sisters story. She was such a mean girl which means she might have a good story to tell. Unbroken was a sweet, emotional and heartwarming story about picking up the pieces and finding your way back home. A great addition to both the contemporary and NA genres. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

4 out of 5 stars!

Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes from Unbroken:
- "I always want you, Jules. Even when I hated you, even when I wished I'd never see your face again, I still lost my mind thinking all the things I'd do to you, if you came back." His voice breaks. When he speaks again, it's with a rough, ragged tone, like he's forcing the words out.
"I'll always want you, Juliet."

- "You're mine," he says again fiercely. "Not his, not anyone else's. You can try and pretend you don't feel it, but you do. You'll always be mine."

- "Looking back, I wonder if mom saw it in my eyes: the storm clouds gathering, the dry crackle of electricity in the air. But it was already too late. No warning sirens were going to save me. I guess you never really know the danger, not until you're the one left, huddled on the ground, surrounded by the pieces of your broken heart."

-"This is my favorite place in the world," Emerson's voice is low, thick with desire. "Right here. In you."

I bought this book based off the amazing reviews... I am truly dumbfounded over what people are raving about with this book. I feel like I was reading an outline of a book with no details filled in.

I did not feel connected to EITHER main character - Jules and Emerson were both terrible. The author continually refers to Jules and Emersons epic summer romance four years prior, but we never learn ANYTHING about it. Emerson is a jerk for 90% of the book and we are supposed to just flip a switch at the end. Jules is like an even more terrible version of Bella Swan - grow a backbone and get some self-respect.

Save your money!

“Looking back, I wonder if mom saw it in my eyes: the storm clouds gathering, the dry crackle of electricity in the air. But it was already too late. No warning sirens were going to save me. I guess you never really know the danger, not until you’re the one left, huddled on the ground, surrounded by the pieces of your broken heart.”

After reading Juliet and Emerson's prequel novella, Untouched, I knew I was in for some heartache in Unbroken. And oh boy did my heart break. There were quite a few times that my heart felt shattered for Juliet and I was ready to throttle Emerson. I love romances where the main characters already have history together. It makes the book that much more emotional, knowing that they have had a past and something has happened to separate them, but now they have found their way back to one another.

This is exactly what happened with Juliet and Emerson. There is an undeniable attraction between these two upon first meeting and they spent an incredible summer together in Beachwood Bay. However, as most summers do, it comes to an end. However, the end of that summer is wrought with heartache, pain, and loss, as Juliet must face the grief of losing her mother. Emerson, who has been Juliet's pillar, suddenly breaks up with her, leaving her shattered and broken beyond repair. Juliet managed to pick herself up just enough to attend school and slowly start to move on with her life. Though, it doesn't come easily or without help.

I really liked Juliet's character. She is very real to me and I like how Grace portrayed her. She is strong, yet still shows weakness and emotion. She hasn't become a machine after such loss and heartbreak. Instead, she has forged forward and with the help of her best friend Lacey, and her new boyfriend Daniel, she has been slowly healing and putting the pieces of her broken heart back together. The novel begins 4 years after Juliet and Emerson's last encounter in Beachwood Bay, and Juliet is headed back there to pack up her family's beach house. She of course could have gotten someone else to do it, but I think Juliet makes the decision to go because she needs closure. She is terrified of running into Emerson, yet there's a part of her that secretly longs to. She can't hide from the memories of what they had and she tries to shake herself out of it.

Emerson. He really is a hurricane, sweeping in and throwing Juliet's life into chaos. And I absolutely loved him. Yes, there were moments I wanted to kick him and shake him, and there was one scene in particular that absolutely had my heart ripped out of my chest. I feel bad for him though. He did what he thought was right and in the end lost the one girl he loved more than life. He is bitter and angry over their break up and really acts like a jerk to her in the beginning.

These two have that whole 'Notebook' romance going on. It's passion and fire, tenderness and recklessness all rolled into one and seriously every scene together gave me chills. Every touch, every look is heated and enough to set your blood on fire. Juliet was screwed the moment she crossed into Beachwood territory. She didn't stand a chance against the storm that was Emerson. I respect the hell out of Juliet for taking care of her life the way she does. She knows being with Emerson while still with Daniel would be wrong and I'm glad she did right by both of them.

Juliet's best friend, Lacey, is a spitfire and I loved her outgoing, fearless attitude. She is a good friend to Juliet, but I was a bit angry at her for not encouraging Juliet to stay true to herself when it came down to who she needed to choose. Instead, Lacey was about the logical choice- the safe choice. Love isn't logical and its a risk, but for Juliet it's one she had to take. Lacey will learn this later on, as she gets her own novella.

I have to take a minute and talk about Melody's writing. I've read ALOT of contemporary romances and she just has this way with words that I can't even explain. The tension between her characters is so electrically charged and the way she described the emotional scenes between Juliet and Emerson left me desperate for more.

I am in love with this series and I would have to say it's one of my favorites. The next book in the series, Unafraid, follows Emerson's younger sister Brit, who we get a glimpse of in this book. She is just like her brother in the sense that she's reckless and hardened by her past. She's also young, and she hasn't made the best choices in her life. Her story is also an emotional one and you can read my review of it here.

Lacey also gets her story in a novella and her love interest was quite the pleasant surprise! Finally, the latest book in the series is Unconditional, which follows Juliet's sister, Carina and Garrett, Brit's best friend and bartender at Emerson's bar. (This will release on 3/17/14).

Juliet's relationship with her family is strained at best. She does not get along with her sister and is hurt that Carina left her to deal with her grief alone, while she went out and did her own thing. Daniel doesn't know about Juliet's past and how messed up her family is. He thinks he's doing right by her by trying to bring them together, when really he's just pushing Juliet away. Juliet's relationship with her father is also an issue and has completely separated herself from him and refuses to take his calls. He was never a good father to her and Carina and wasn't a good husband to their mother either. Where Daniel is unknowing of Juliet's family, Emerson is the one Juliet never had to hide from. He also knows what it's like to have a crazy family life, so she connects with him on that level, where she can't with Daniel, who has a good upbringing and loving parents.

So how would I describe Unbroken? This book is passionate and fierce- it's about love and loss, hope and determination, and it's about fighting for what you want and love most in the world. I highly recommend this series.
