Description de l'ouvrage

14 février 2013
From a prison cell, in which he has been held on suspicion of breaking the Official Secrets Act, Charles Thoroughgood awaits not only his bail, but also the reappearance of the woman whom all the major roads in his life have led back to. After his years in the army and then with MI6, Charles has begun a new chapter in his life with the Secret Intelligence Agency, shadowing the movements of a suspected double agent. Charles knows that he has nothing to hide, and as he casts his mind over the course of recent events, he begins to suspect a more sinister motivation, both personally and politically, behind his incarceration…

Quatrième de couverture

Incarcerated, interrogated, betrayed.
As far as he can see, retired MI6 officer Charles Thoroughgood has done nothing wrong. He has not broken the Official Secrets Act. He cooperated fully with the officers who came to arrest him. He made no trouble. But now, locked in a police cell, he has time to reconsider the events that have brought him to this point.
And all roads lead to one person.
The woman he never married and never forgot. Only through her can the professional and personal themes of his life be reconciled. But at what - and whose - cost?
In the powerful and subtly layered final instalment of the Thoroughgood trilogy, Alan Judd shows the spy world as it really is and spies as they really are - people like us, caught up in strong and conflicting currents.
'John le Carré has no peer among contemporary spy novelists, but Judd is beginning to run the master close . . . utterly hypnotic' Daily Mail
'Judd knows the world he writes about from the inside . . . One comes away from this fascinating book with many feelings stirred' Daily Telegraph

This was the first book I have read by Alan Judd and found it extremely well written, the characters came to life, the story-line well crafted and, for me, it exceeded the hype from the press reviews. It seemed to have a similarity of style with Le Carre and Alan Furst, both of whom I find an excellent read. I enjoyed it so much I had to purchase other books by the same author, and again was delighted by the read.

Literate, intelligent, thought provoking. Mr Judd's books are a real discovery. His books are not set in a 1930s/1940s like Furst's. Judd is one ofvthose authors to treasure.

Alan Judd manages to blend historical fact with espionage fiction to give his stories a ring of authenticity. He has clearly visited all the places he writes about and knows his subject well. A very enjoyable read.

Alan Judd writes well, building and describing his characters whilst working the story around the events of the time. I am looking forward to Mr Judd's next book.
