Présentation de l'éditeur

The most comprehensive coverage to date of Air France 447, an Airbus A330 that crashed in the ocean north of Brazil on June 1, 2009, killing all 228 persons on board.

Written by A330 Captain, Bill Palmer, this book opens to understanding the actions of the crew, how they failed to understand and control the problem, and how the airplane works and the part it played. All in easy to understand terms.
Addressed are the many contributing aspects of weather, human factors, and airplane system operation and design that the crew could not recover from. How each contributed is covered in detail along with what has been done, and needs to be done in the future to prevent this from happening again.

As someone who has had over 40 years professional involvement with the aerospace and aviation industries and 25 years hands on flying experience it is impossible notmto admire the degree of research that has gone into this book. It is also impossible to ignore the fact that overall the theme of the book is to whitewash an ncompetant crew.

Très bien documenté. Très intéressant. Si seulement tout ce qu'on avait lu sur AF447 était de cette qualité... Un plaisir à lire.

I fly the A330, the author was one of my simulator instructors when I checked out 7 years ago. Capt Palmer wrote our operating manual for the A330, and writes an excellent analysis of this accident. This book is a must read for any Airbus pilot or anyone wishing to understand more about this accident.

It would be great if there would never have been a need to write this book. However, if this book weren't written now, it would have to be written at some point, for some aircraft and some other airline.

AF447 was a tragedy. It is, at first thought, amazing how a modern airliner with highest technology and highly trained crew on board can simply disappear. Bill Palmer dissects that fateful night in admirable detail. He takes you there - from the initial moment of strange indications, to the incomprehension in the cockpit, to the disastrous ending - as well as to the pain-staking investigation and final report. You live the cockpit conversations, you feel the confusion, you can smell the desperation. It's not a suspenseful novel - you already know the outcome. What you learn here is the detailed, second-by-second analysis of what went on and what went wrong.

Bill writes with the technical perspective of someone who understands the accident aircraft in finest detail. Of someone who understands the benefits as well as shortcomings of Airline Training in its finest detail. Of someone who understands Human Factors. Every accident is the result of a chain of events. Bill does not assign fault. And he offers solutions to prevent recurrence of a similar accident.

I admire the author for his tenacious research, and for creating a work that appeals to everyone with a basic amount of technical understanding - from basic aviation enthusiasts to airline instructors: As an aviation enthusiast I was utterly fascinated by the read. As an airline pilot I was incredulous. And as an A330-pilot the book had a profound impact on me.

Captain Palmer draws attention to a somewhat overlooked problem not only in aviation but also in many other fields that have undergone a rapid paradigm-shift in technological advance: Do Humans run technology, or does technology run the Humans?

I am not a pilot, and not even work in an air related company (port, plane, craft).

This book is all about process: identifying a problem, procedures, communication and action.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 What your airline doesn't teach you. Interesting read for aviation enthusiasts. 12 février 2014
Par Mark A. McClain - Publié sur Amazon.com
Captain Palmer has gone to great lengths to explain the various causal factors in this unfortunate accident. The in depth discussion is a must read for all but the few Airbus gurus out there. As a professional pilot for over 35 years that is current, qualified and actively flying the A330 I gained a much better understanding of the Airbus flight control, automation and indication systems. As a "Boeing guy" for many years the narrative and writing style made the discussion much more interesting than the "stale bread" that aircraft manuals can be. As I read I wondered if airline training could be better served by telling more stories about the aircraft we fly, in lieu of droning through facts, figures and graphs. The way Captain Palmer breaks down the systems certainly increased my knowledge of the A330. I just finished my recurrent training last month and finally felt I could keep up with the instructor during the systems review. A must read for professional pilots.

The layperson can also gain a lot of understanding of the modern airliner, the airline industry and the challenges faced by pilots everyday and night, just as the Air France pilots did. There are some fairly technical discussions but for those who don't want to immerse themselves in those aspects just bypass those discussions to focus on the big picture story of an accident that has served as an overdue wake up call for all of us in the aviation industry.

I will keep this book for future reference, when I get it back from the long list of other pilots who have already borrowed my copy.

This book is authoritative, clear, and objective about an accident that never should have happened on many different levels. It does a great job of explaining Fly by Wire controls, Airbus design, aerodynamics, weather, human error, and the other various factors involved in this tragedy. I like the way it divides the pilots' loss of control of the aircraft into 4 phases, so it is easier to understand. And I like the way it concludes with lessons for the future that are spot on. It is a good read for all levels of aviation enthusiasts.
