An astounding work in both form and content; yes, this is a long and ambitious novel but in this case the length is a necessary element serving the scope of DeLillo's contemplation. Impossible to resist his sense of history and the merging together of individual lives and destinies on the planes of space and time; in Underworld, even (especially!) young Carter who "got the ball" is worthy of the same attention given J. Edgar Hoover and other historical figures. This touching humanity is just part of the beauty and appeal of this novel, which also ventures toward insightful commentary on history, war, art and relationships. But for those daunted by the sheer size of the book, try reading "Libra" first; the style of this earlier DeLillo novel is equally mesmerizing and the content (fascinating speculative portrayal of Lee Harvey Oswald's path) less all-encompassing than Underworld.

Attention voici un très long roman! Je n'ai pas peur des histoires longues mais je n'ai pas réussi à finir ce livre, pourtant décrit comme un des meilleurs de sa génération par The New York times si ma mémore est bonne. C'est bien écrit mais on s'ennuie lors de longs passages où il ne se passe pas grand chose. A réserver aux amateurs de littérature prêts à relever un défi: aller au bout et comprendre l'intérêt de ce livre.
