Gr. 3-5. The format of these books in the World Organizations series is somewhat like a Web page: blocks of text share space with photos, checklists (in Melvern's book), and information boxes. The design will greatly appeal to some kids; others may have trouble following along. Melvern quickly introduces the history, structure, mission, agencies, and programs of the United Nations, as well as the difficulties it has in achieving its goals. Powell's World Wildlife Fund, one of a few books on this subject for this age group, supplies some history but focuses mostly on projects and partnerships with governments and conservation organizations concerned with biodiversity. Problems it is up against are outlined in boxed insets, and "Spotlight" segments briefly describe projects underway. Captioned photos in both books, most in full color, are diverse and packed with human-interest detail. Both books have a glossary and addresses to contact; the U.N. book also notes a few further readings. Many readers will find these good jumping-off places for research. Stephanie Zvirin
