Présentation de l'éditeur

The best-selling paperback "Unsold TV Pilots: The Greatest Shows You Never Saw," the basis for the hour-long ABC special "The Best TV Shows That Never Were" and the hour-long CBS special "The Greatest Shows You Never Saw," is now available in a special Kindle edition.

“The Best Bathroom Reading EVER," - San Francisco Chronicle

"A must-browse for media freaks.” —USA Today

“Irresistible and enthralling.” —Hartford Courant

“Full of fool’s gold and genuine TV treasures.” —The New York Post

This lively and entertaining book looks at the three hundred best and worst TV series ideas—known in the industry as "pilots"—that never made it to primetime. From the adventures of a Samurai D.A. to the antics of an invisible alien baby, Lee Goldberg details the greatest shows you never saw.

Here's an excerpt from the People Magazine review of the TV special that was based on this book:

"''The Best TV Shows That Never Were,' based on the book 'Unsold TV Pilots' by co-executive producer Lee Goldberg, is a breezy hour of clips from sample episodes of series that the networks decided against ordering. Not surprisingly, most of them stink—which is why the special is such a good time. You'll slap your head in disbelief—try not to hurt yourself—at the idea of John Denver as a singing FBI agent. You'll wonder whether Joe Penny as a samurai district attorney would have been funnier—unintentionally—that John Belushi's 'Saturday Night Live.' And you'll think Scott Bakula is pretty down to earth in 'Star Trek: Enterprise' after you see him in a busted pilot as a wacky scientist who accidentally merges with a satellite. For tube-historians, this is a must see." —People

(This book is an abridgment of "Unsold Television Pilots 1955-1989" by Lee Goldberg)

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A poor Kindle edition of a great pop culture reference book. 7 janvier 2011

This book is an exhaustively researched compedium of tv pilots sorted in alphabetically in large general groups (movie adaptations, "fantastical premises", etc). It is a good companion book to a general reference website and it encouraged me to do more research on the more interesting pilots I'd read about.

I wish I was able to see a few of them as they sound unintentionally hilarious (a scientist that's genetically merged with... A SATELLITE?? A feel good, upbeat musical comedy about the homeless?)

The Kindle edition has suffered from being scanned in with an optical reading software and has obviously not been proofread. This can be very distracting and make it hard to search the web directly from the book. You may want to purchase the physical copy if this will be a distraction.

I grabbed the condensed version for my Kindle because it sounded so interesting. I was disappointed. The majority of this book is made up of credits and people's names with small descriptions of the plot. I guess I was expecting funny antics and a bit more than a book of a list of names. I ended up skimming past the last half of it, which was more of the same. Skip this one unless you have ties to the industry or collect names.

Fascinating book, obviously a lot of work went into the research. I was surprised at how many of these I remember seeing. The large number of typos and punctuation errors in the Kindle edition was somewhat distracting, though.

...and for only 2.99, a really FUN book! Yes, I'd like to have had more info on each title, but what you do get is facinating. Best of all, with the info inside I was able to search YouTube and find the pilots for such weird/awesome/hilarious shows as "The Annihalator" (a plane full of people are replaced with alien-created robot duplicates, bent on conquest), "Badlands 2005" (1988 post-apocalyptic tale of a U.S Marshal, his cyborg buddy and Sharon Stone in the distant future of...2005!), "Baffled" (A great idea for a show! Leonard Nemoy as a psychic race car driver who solves occult crimes with his hot female partner) and the bizarre-yet-awesome "Clone Master" (a guy makes 13 clones of himself, and together they solve crimes while running from the government who wants them all dead) make this book worth the small price.

Note, this would have been a 4 star review...but I deduct a star for the lack of a proper index. Want to skip ahead to a certain page? Sorry...but you'll have to turn the pages till you get to the right page, or remember the location number...which is a pain. Thank goodness that all the best stuff is found in the High Concept pilots towards the front...

I have actually seen some of those shows. Kindle edition has some odd pagination and at least one spelling error, but overall the book was really interesting and informative.
