Présentation de l'éditeur

Following up his popular "Introduction to the TI-Nspire," teacher and author Lucas Allen continues his TI-Nspire (TM) Tutorials series with a look at the TI-Nspire CAS. The CAS, or computer algebra system, version of the TI-Nspire is popular at the high school and college level alike for its ability to manipulate not just numbers, but variables. For all the amazing growth that the TI-Nspire platform has shown over the last few years, there still remains a lack of quality resources available for the CAS version of the TI-Nspire. This brief book is designed to address the needs of students and teachers in search of help with their TI-Nspire CAS.

In this second volume of the series, careful attention is given to the CAS specific features of the TI-Nspire CAS. Basic features such as expanding, factoring, and solving simple equations are covered as well as more advanced techniques such as solving complex equations, derivatives, integrals, and differential equations. Any student or teacher working with mathematics from algebra through calculus can benefit from the techniques taught in this book.

Everything in this second edition of the book is up to date with the latest version of the TI-Nspire CAS operating system, version 3.9, released in June of 2014. If you don't have the latest version of the OS on your TI-Nspire CAS, the book has all of the information you'll need on how to update your calculator for free. Although the button sequences in the tutorials are designed with the TI-Nspire CX CAS and TI-Nspire CAS Touchpad in mind, even the original TI-Nspire Clickpad is capable of everything covered in the book by making slight modifications to the button sequences.

Lucas Allen has become an authority on the use of the TI-Nspire CAS since its release, as he was an early adopter of the device for use with the math team he coaches in a public school in downstate Illinois. In the spring of 2012, his team captured the Illinois math team state championship, beating out many of Chicago's elite private schools. In this book, you will learn many of the exact same strategies his team uses on the TI-Nspire CAS.

For over 10 years, Allen has taught mathematics at the high school level with students of every imaginable achievement level. He has worked with the TI-Nspire for almost half of that time. He blogs about graphing calculators and other math education technologies at Tech Powered Math.

HASH(0x9b7d4b40) étoiles sur 5 Helpful Quick Reference for Teachers and Students 29 septembre 2012
Par Melissa Jean Dunton - Publié sur
Format: Format Kindle
I have purchased both volumes of the TI-Nspire Tutorials, and they have helped my students tremendously in class. I teach AP Statistics, and many of my students have purchased N-Spires for the visually appealing graphics and multiple representations. Because most students were more familiar with the TI-84 interface, I have dedicated much classtime towards introducing the features and functions of the N-Spire. These tutorials have not only helped me to become more knowledgeable with the calculator, but my students have also appreciated the quick reference book.

While the books do not cover all the capabilities of the calculator, one advantage of these books is that they are to the point and highlight the main uses of the calculator. Both books promote the idea of "Getting Started" with the TI-Nspire graphing calculators and that's precisely what the books do. My students (or I for that manner) do not have time to read a 200 page manual when we only need a foundation of knowledge to be successful.

Overall, these books have been useful in my classroom, and I would recommend them to other teachers and students looking to develop their knowledge of the next generation of graphing calculators.

There are some sages within the handheld computing realm such as Ted Beers, Bill Wickes, Joe Horn, and Oliver Armanda that have passed on their passion of handheld computing platforms over the decades. Lucas Allen is one of those guys that is offering his knowledge to any new owner of the TI-Nspire calculator in the form of a set of books (2 as of this writing).

This concise book contains some worthy knowledge that any current new TI-Nspire CAS owner should possess. The author showed me a few important items concerning the usage of the calculator which pushed me up the learning curve rather quickly. The book is easy to read, is in a good format for either reading on the PC, cellphone, or tablet, and contains examples of everything noted including caveats about the calculator's interpretations. This is an excellent read and I look forward to more work by Lucas. If you are seasoned Nspire CAS owner, this book may not be of any assistance due to the nature of the content being geared for the uninitiated.

HASH(0x9b7d4e70) étoiles sur 5 Volume 2 makes me look forward to Volume 3! 20 septembre 2012

I worked through both Volume 1 and Volume 2 and found them both very helpful. The focus of volume 2 is on the Algebra (or CAS) menu. Although this is short book, it is the right length to get started and gives enough information and tips that I feel like I can now explore more on my own. It is perfect for the beginner and doesn't assume a bunch of pre-requisite knowledge. Solving a function for a variable and implicit differentiation were two of the many CAS features that impressed me. However, if you are very unfamiliar with the N-Spire, I would recommend reading Volume 1 first. If you are a math teacher and are looking for a gift idea, put these books on your Wish List.

A couple of months after I bought my TI NSpire I bought the first book in this series. It was great! It really paved the way for me to find my way around the NSpire.

Now that I've got some experience with the NSpire, I wanted to learn more about the CAS features. I had gone as far as I could on my own so I bought this book. Out of the whole book there were only two things that I read that I had not already learned on my own.

This book is a decent read if you're looking to get an overview of this device, but it's not detailed. The writting is fine, and the book is good as far as what it is, but learning to use this device like a pro? I think not.

The "for dummies" series did a great job, and I'd give them a 5 for explanation, so if you're looking for a "how to" and not a "what it can do" I wouldn't recommend this book.
