Présentation de l'éditeur

Following up his popular "Introduction to the TI-Nspire," teacher and author Lucas Allen continues his TI-Nspire (TM) Tutorials series with a look at the TI-Nspire CAS. The CAS, or computer algebra system, version of the TI-Nspire is popular at the high school and college level alike for its ability to manipulate not just numbers, but variables. For all the amazing growth that the TI-Nspire platform has shown over the last few years, there still remains a lack of quality resources available for the CAS version of the TI-Nspire. This brief book is designed to address the needs of students and teachers in search of help with their TI-Nspire CAS.

In this second volume of the series, careful attention is given to the CAS specific features of the TI-Nspire CAS. Basic features such as expanding, factoring, and solving simple equations are covered as well as more advanced techniques such as solving complex equations, derivatives, integrals, and differential equations. Any student or teacher working with mathematics from algebra through calculus can benefit from the techniques taught in this book.

Everything in this second edition of the book is up to date with the latest version of the TI-Nspire CAS operating system, version 3.9, released in June of 2014. If you don't have the latest version of the OS on your TI-Nspire CAS, the book has all of the information you'll need on how to update your calculator for free. Although the button sequences in the tutorials are designed with the TI-Nspire CX CAS and TI-Nspire CAS Touchpad in mind, even the original TI-Nspire Clickpad is capable of everything covered in the book by making slight modifications to the button sequences.

Lucas Allen has become an authority on the use of the TI-Nspire CAS since its release, as he was an early adopter of the device for use with the math team he coaches in a public school in downstate Illinois. In the spring of 2012, his team captured the Illinois math team state championship, beating out many of Chicago's elite private schools. In this book, you will learn many of the exact same strategies his team uses on the TI-Nspire CAS.

For over 10 years, Allen has taught mathematics at the high school level with students of every imaginable achievement level. He has worked with the TI-Nspire for almost half of that time. He blogs about graphing calculators and other math education technologies at Tech Powered Math.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent Tutorials to get you started with the CAS 24 janvier 2013

This little book is short (less than 100 pages) but easy to follow and very helpful. It is a series of illustrative tutorials that introduce several useful capabilities of the TI-Nspire CAS calculator. If you have ever tried to wade through the TI Reference Guide for this material, you will appreciate the brevity. It is not intended to cover all the features or be an in-depth treatise. But if you are looking for a quick jump start introduction to the capabilities of the CAS calculator, this is the book for you. Personally, I'd like to see a follow-up Volume 3.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Well Written Book - Recommended for TI-Nspire CX CAS Users 6 septembre 2012

"Using CAS Features Like a Champion" is a well written book. While this book does not describe every possible feature, the book describes and provides examples the most common commands, such as expand, factor, solve, and calculus functions. One of my favorite things I learned from this book was the the TI-Nspire CAS can find complex solutions for systems: just inserting a "c" in front of the solve command will do the trick. The book also plenty of screens so you can check your work.

I recommend this book as a good introduction to new TI-Nspire users as well as seasoned users. Definitely worth checking it out.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent Purchase-- well worth $ 8 septembre 2012

I teach high school math and considered myself moderate in ability with the TI-Nspire before reading this book. I must have been a beginner. A very well-written book that gave me more insightful tips than I can count. I highly recommend this book for any level. If you're a beginner trying to get comfortable with the calculator, or if you are more advanced and looking for unique capabilities of the TI-Nspire, this book is well worth the money! I saw a comment about $5 more for an "Nspire for Dummies Book" that is 400 pages. I wanted something more succinct and this tutorial delivered!
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent book for anyone that wants to quickly learn the power and simplicity of the TI-Nspire CAS 21 février 2015

I didn't know what a Computer Algebra system was before I read Lucas's book. Now I do. This book was written from the viewpoint of a mentor that wants to help you learn about the power built into the TI-Nspire CAS product line and its advantages over calculators like the TI-84 and non-CAS TI-Nspires. It doesn't cover every single single Algebra or Calculus function because there are too many. Instead it covers the ones used most commonly, like solving for the roots of a polynomial, taking 1st, 2nd and higher order derivatives, and doing definite and indefinite integrals. The main idea here is to help you get familiarized with the simplicity and power of the Nspire CAS. It also shows you how to use the Nspire's menu system to access these commands, or if you prefer, the syntax of the command you would type in at the calculator prompt.

The book does assume a small amount of TI Nspire knowlege, like how the document features work. I didn't have this knowledge so I had to read Lucas's other book "The TI-Nspire for Beginners" first and it was also excellent. I spent most of a day reading these two books and although I am not an expert, I do use my TI-Nspire CX CAS with confidence.

Note: Writing programs for the TI-Nspires is beyond the scope of this book. I hope Mr. Allen will do a programming book in the future.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Helpful Quick Reference for Teachers and Students 29 septembre 2012
Par Melissa Jean Dunton - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
I have purchased both volumes of the TI-Nspire Tutorials, and they have helped my students tremendously in class. I teach AP Statistics, and many of my students have purchased N-Spires for the visually appealing graphics and multiple representations. Because most students were more familiar with the TI-84 interface, I have dedicated much classtime towards introducing the features and functions of the N-Spire. These tutorials have not only helped me to become more knowledgeable with the calculator, but my students have also appreciated the quick reference book.

While the books do not cover all the capabilities of the calculator, one advantage of these books is that they are to the point and highlight the main uses of the calculator. Both books promote the idea of "Getting Started" with the TI-Nspire graphing calculators and that's precisely what the books do. My students (or I for that manner) do not have time to read a 200 page manual when we only need a foundation of knowledge to be successful.

Overall, these books have been useful in my classroom, and I would recommend them to other teachers and students looking to develop their knowledge of the next generation of graphing calculators.
