Revue de presse

"It's exciting when you find a strong new voice ringing out through the halls of fantasy, and John Gwynne hits all the right spots in his epic tale of good vs evil, the first in the Faithful & The Fallen series . . . there's a lot of pleasure to be had in this debut novel; Gwynne is definitely one to watch."SFX

"With three-dimensional characters, a gripping plot, and a world that became real to me, John Gwynne's Malice is a great debut. In short, this is the kind of fantasy I love to read and I truly can't wait for the next volume in The Faithful and the Fallen!"—Fantasy Book Review

"Malice is easily one of the best fantasy novels I read this year, and one which will appeal to most fans of the genre. With such an epic debut novel, John Gwynne is a writer to watch from now on."—Iwillreadbooks.com

Présentation de l'éditeur

The Banished Lands are torn by war as the army of High King Nathair sweeps the realm challenging all who oppose his holy crusade. Allied with the manipulative Queen Rhin of Cambren, there are few who can stand against him. But Rhin is playing her own games and has her eyes on a far greater prize . . .

Left for dead – her kin have fled and her country is overrun with enemies – Cywen fights to survive. But any chance of escape is futile once Nathair and his disquieting advisor Calidus realize who she is. They have no intention of letting such a prize slip from their grasp. For she may be their one chance at killing the biggest threat to their power.

Meanwhile, the young warrior Corban flees from his conquered homeland with his exiled companions, heading for the only place that may offer them sanctuary. But to get there they must travel through Cambren, avoiding warbands, giants and the vicious wolven of the mountains. And all the while Corban struggles to become the man that everyone believes him to be – the Bright Star and saviour of the Banished Lands.

Embroiled in struggles for power and survival, the mortal world is unaware of the greatest threat of all. In the Otherworld, dark forces scheme to bring a host of the Fallen into the world of flesh to end the war with the Faithful, once and for all.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great continuation of the epic Malice story 27 août 2014

There's not much more I can say that I didn't already write in my 5-star review of Malice, the first book in this series. Valor confirms my decision to put this series in my top ten epic fantasy list, which means my top 10 now has 11 books in it, as none can be dropped.

You just have to read Malice and Valor if you're a fan of great epic fantasy. Last year's great finds and sensations were Blood Song and The Red Knight. This year's are Malice and Valor. They are just that good.

One thing I may not have mentioned in my review of Malice was the major role of the giants. Most epic fantasies have giants either as gentle helper-outers of the protagonists, or as easily vanquished antagonists who are bit players. Not here. They are the major race opposing the humans and they use their size and weapons skills and smarts to very lethal effect. These are really the first books I've read where giants are fully fleshed out and have starring roles.

Magic once again is very scarce in these books, but obviously will become more prevalent as the ultimate bad (and good to some extent) guys and gals come closer to entering the many story arcs. But that's another great selling point about these books. Even without much magic they are absolutely fantastic, the kind you just have a hard time putting down.

Expensive but definitely a quality, full-length book.

Builds and develops the original. There is good progress across the board for characters and story-line although from the size of it i think i may be more than a trilogy.

I eagerly await the next installment and the answers to some burning questions.

The only thing to keep in mind is that you may wish to have a character list with you if its been a few months since you read book 1. After a few chapters i was back into the flow though.

Move over George R.R. Martin. That says it all right there. John Gwynne's "Valor", book two of his "The Faithful and The Fallen" series, is an absolutely tremendous follow up to it's predecessor "Malice". This series should be on every fantasy readers "read" shelf. If it's marked "to read" put whatever you are reading down and read this. If you haven't read "Malice", start there. Now, on to the review.

"Valour" picks up right where "Malice" left off. There is a war across The Banished Lands. Asroth seeks the destruction of all that Elyon has created. Chaos reigns and reading about it is a most enjoyable endeavor.

John Gwynne is crafting a fine tale. On par with the best fantasy writers of today. Every page feels like something big is going to be on it. The series is filled with vibrant and vivid characters, and John makes each on feel equally important and valid, and the action in "Valour" is an unbelievably gory, wondrous affair.

Simply put, "Valour" is a near perfect "book two". Following up "Malice" with more than just filler material to progress the story. Difficult to put down is an understatement. Read it. Don't miss this series.

To give you an idea of my literary tastes, I enjoy The Stormlight Archives; Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn; Blood Song; Ryiria Revelations; and anything by JRR Tolkien (of course)

Overall, I thought that the author tells a solid tale here. Yes, it is a standard simple-boy-with-a-great-destiny theme; however, I really enjoy Mr. Gwynne' s characters. I appreciate that he can tell a good tale and make me care about what happens to the people who inhabit his world. No matter whose point of view the story followed, also I was drawn in. I also appreciate that he doesn't feel the need to pepper the pages with needless profanity, so I can feel quite comfortable with recommending his book to my kids.

My main complaint with the book is that the grammar is not brilliant. I understand artistic liberties and all of that, but I can only read so many sentence fragments before I begin to find it really distracting. It makes me wonder about the editor. However, as I said earlier, though this book might not break any new ground in the fantasy genre, I found it enjoyable enough and exciting enough that I am eagerly anticipating the next book. I am especially impatient to find out what happens to Veradis and Maquin.
