Descriptions du produit

Revue de presse

".the book is a companion to the book Valve Amplifiers, 4th edition also by Morgan Jones and published by Newnes/Elsevier.  This is a serious design book with details on audio circuit design, equations and related topics.  A 4th edition means that the book has been around for a while and is being updated and there is a real market for it.", March 17, 2014

Présentation de l'éditeur

Valve Amplifiers has been recognized as the most comprehensive guide to valve amplifier design, analysis, modification and maintenance. It provides a detailed presentation of the rudiments of electronics and valve design for engineers and non-experts. The source also covers design principles and construction techniques to help end users build their own tool from scratch designs that work. The author's approach walks the reader through each step of designing and constructing, starting with an overview of the essential working principles of valve amplifiers, the simple and complex stages, the process of linking the stages, and completing the design.
The book is comprised of seven chapters all of which include a DIY guide discussion of practical aspects. The text starts with familiarization of the fundamentals of electronics, which are essential for designing and building valve amplifiers. Particular attention has been paid to providing solutions for questions that are commonly asked and faced by beginners in valve designing and construction.

Valve Amplifiers is a masterful hands-on guide for both experts and novices who work with tube audio equipment, and for electronic hobbyists, audio engineers, and audiophiles.

* The practical guide to analysis, modification, design, construction and maintenance of valve amplifiers
* The fully up-to-date approach to valve electronics
* Essential reading for audio designers and music and electronics enthusiasts alike

Although the author clearly has in-depth knowledge and expertise in the area of valve electronics, the book does not present the material in manner that is accessible to the hobbyist or someone lacking an electronics background. Chapter 1 purports to be an overview of basic principles of electronics, but I have seen some of the same material in other sources presented in a manner that is much more understandable. An example of the language in Chapter 1 : "Like the integrator, practical charge amplifiers require a means of discharging the feedback capacitor to prevent amplifier saturation, and this is commonly achieved by a parallel discharge resistor (see Figure 1.51)." And "Such sources thus look like a Norton source (pure current source in parallel with capacitance) and can be converted into a Thevenin source having a pure voltage source in series with the source capacitance." To some readers, I am sure this makes perfect sense and is basic information, but for others this is a rough read. And this is Chapter 1. I suspect the vast majority of people interested in a book pertaining to valve amplifiers are musicians, stereophiles, and hobbyists who do some basic restoration, maintenance and kit-building and now wish to dig a little deeper into the topic. For them, a book that starts with some practical, applied information and then gradually, layer-by-layer, goes deeper into the topic would be a good fit. This book seems to approach the topic from the other direction, similar to teaching a foreign language by starting with 100 hours of verb conjugation whilst failing to teach basic phrases that would be of immediate use (when I visit a foreign country, knowing whether a verb is regular or irregular comes second to knowing how to order a meal and find a loo). My point of this review is not to bash the author or the book but is instead to provide some much-needed counterweight to all of the glowing reviews and to help potential buyers make an informed purchasing decision.

This book on vacuum tubes is as necessary as air to breath. 30 mai 2013

This classic is updated and truly one of the most useful vacuum tube engineering books I've ever owned. The math is clearly presented and easy to refer to as needed. The discussions of dynamic range, noise and distortion have just enough depth to be useful during a real design effort. Don't know how I'd previously missed owning such a great book.

dense and incomplete 5 octobre 2012

I love Morgan Jone's Valve books. He writes in a very clear manner and explains with basic algebra all the material. I do wish he would describe in detail some of the things he mentions in passing. On one page he describes using a CCS as the bias for a push pull class A output stage, then no further mention of it is made. No details of how the terms Anode to Anode Rp of an output transformer is defined or calculated. a Glossary and a list of equivalent European Vs American part numbers would have been nice. But. With all that, and more. This is the best book out for Vacuum tube audio. Buy it, you will learn lots.

Good valve book 8 janvier 2013

The "ne plus ultra" of tube amp books. Contains all you need and probably more than you were looking for. You can read it to just get the answers you were looking for or you can dive in and "study" the subject.
but want to learn the fine details. This book accomplishes this without a doubt 15 janvier 2015

I have read about 1/2 of this book so far. It is the most comprehensive book of it's type intended for people who know a fair amount about tubes, but want to learn the fine details. This book accomplishes this without a doubt. If you are looking for "VALVE AMPLIFIER DESIGN FOR IDIOTS", then don't buy this book.

This is not Tubes 101. It assumes that the reader has a basic understanding of how tubes work. It uses simple math do describe things without going in to the crazy math, physics and chemistry of thing.

It is not meant for hobbyists just trying to fix up an old amp. There are other books for that.

This book is meant to be read by people who are already educated in the operation of tubes and want to learn how to design tube power amplifiers. I am only 1/2 way through this book and have a bunch of ideas as to how I want to procede with a design.

This book has accomplished what it set out to do 100%

If your brain can handle it, you will leave this book with the ability to design a fine tube amplifier.

Building it is another story. That is the topic of the author's other book which I have bought, but not read yet..

If you are looking to design a tube (valve) amplifier, then this is the book for you. If you are just a hobbyist or audiophool looking to fix or upgrade an amplifier, then this is not for you.
