Une version historique. Il faut avoir en tête qu'elle fait partie des toutes premières versions pour piano. Sans cette première lecture, pas de version Richter, pas plus de version Gavrilov.

A Glenn Gould fore-runner 12 février 2013
Par Ralph Moore - Publié sur Amazon.com
Devotees of Glenn Gould and folk of my generation who were first introduced to this extraordinary music by way of his exceptionally animated, wilful and percussive treatment will be astonished to discover that his mode was wholly anticipated by Maria Yudina. A favourite of Stalin who openly defied and rebuked Uncle Joe, escaped the Gulags and then outlived him, she is often uncannily like the Werewolf in her fearless articulation of JSB's sinuous linealities.

She can miss the "still point" in the more reflective variations but the vitality of her interpretation is balm after the effete tinkling of such as Schiff. She is not the classically restrained patrician that Perahia becomes nor the youthful poet of Lifschitz but a formidably direct and concentrated communicator. She is a tad perfunctory in the slower, more reflective or wistful movements such as the famous Black Pearl but there is an energy and certainty to Yudina's playing which is wholly absorbing. The quality of the 1968 Melodiya recording is excellent for its era.

a whole new world 25 octobre 2012

Equal to Glenn Gould, but each variation sounds like a whole new world. Full of what they call heart in the NBA. Exciting, firey, melodic, intense. My other favorite is the Perahia version with the repeats, for its serenity and hypnotism.

HIPster Wars - News from the Bach Front - Communiqué 51 8 janvier 2013
Par Bernard Michael O'Hanlon - Publié sur Amazon.com
"Behold, I saw Satan von Karajan fall like lightning from the sky!"

Thus spoke Father Melchizedek OP, the High Priest of Period Practice. Bedecked in a sky-blue cassock, he was being chauffeured back from his latest initiative - the Festival of the Supreme Clipped Phrase - by his trusty manservant, Cato. The traffic was frightful. In response to the comment, his driver looked up quizzically through the sunroof of the Silver Hornet.

"I'm sorry, Your Eminence: what do you mean?"

`Tut, tut, Cato. You are so unimaginative! Did you not view the spectacle of the past hour where I paid homage to the Supreme Clipped Phrase on behalf of the National Convention of SPECTRE (Sinister Period Practice Enacted to Counter Traditional Readings Everlastingly)? Why do I bother with you? Now turn on the radio! We're going nowhere fast in this traffic - it's always congested around the Champ de Mars. Who knows - perhaps we'll hear some trio sonatas by Buxtehude - what joy!"

Cato obliged. Seconds later, the occupants of the Silver Hornet were being beguiled by Variation XXVIII of BWV 988. It was being played chimerically on a piano. Aghast, the cleric reached for his pectoral cross.

"What new heresy is this?" he shrieked. "I thought we had extirpated such malpractices! It's all exaggeration and bumptiousness, a late 19th C sensibility applied to some of Bach's most glorious music! Even so, I need to understand this latest deviation. Cato, I want a copy of this performance - for the lack of a better word - on my desk tomorrow morning! Make it happen! Evil though it be, we understand its infamy and use it to edify the masses."

Now upon their return to the hollowed-out volcano, Cato chased up the recording. The pianist in question was Maria Yudina. The performance of the Goldberg Variations had been streamed live from a concert; as such, there was no recording at hand. Unwilling to risk the wrath of his Master, Cato coaxed Yudina into a studio overnight and together they recorded the Goldberg Variations. As he listened on, Cato mused to himself:

I really don't know why that bugger is so irascible towards this performance. It is supremely musical and vividly alive. Here is a person who can genuinely play. Like all good Goldberg Variations, it is a Grand Tour of the Cosmos, running as it does the full gamut of emotions. Above all, there is an immense energy to her playing as if Yudina could go on playing this work forever if Bach had slugged it out with Infinity. The pedal is used judiciously. Yudina has chosen more repeats than I would. As evidenced by Variation XVIII, her rhythmic bounce is impeccable. Perhaps Variation XXX could have been played with a degree more wistfulness as journey's end comes into view. Yudina is likewise a touch mundane as she addresses the 'dark majesty' of the Black Pearl. Even so, these are sunspots which do not detract from one's pleasure. This recording is not state of the art - it's musky and opaque - but it still conveys her timbre and solicitude for Bach's polyphony.

Once the recording session had come to an end, Cato thanked the pianist, paid a sum and drove her home in the Silver Hornet. Come the next morning, a copy of this performance was sitting on the cleric's desk. It was accompanied by a note which had been handwritten by Yudina.

"Dear Father Melchizedek OP, the High Priest of Period Practice. I wish to thank you for your most generous gift and express to you how much it touched my heart. I will continue to pray for you and your dry soul every day and every night for the rest of my life. Please remember that God's love for you is as infinite as His mercy, and if you but confess and repent He will forgive your many sins against our homeland and musicians who chose to play Bach on the piano. Once again, I wish to thank you for your gift. I have donated it in its entirety to the church of St Kempff which I regularly attend. Most sincerely, Maria V. Yudina"

This note was read with immense displeasure by the cleric. With a scowl, it was crumpled up and cast away with disdain.
