Présentation de l'éditeur

This book, written by award winning garden author Doug Green, describes the simple ways for beginner gardeners to succeed with growing vegetables in their backyard garden. The book lists a variety of techniques to both get a headstart on the growing season and succeed in short-growing areas. This is a practical how-to kind of book written by a seasoned pro gardener who’s been there and done that.

Green describes practical ways to get more vegetables from smaller spaces and maximize harvests on existing plants. From simple crop rotation to answering garden questions such as “How many plants do I need to feed my family?” this is a great starter book for feeding your family and reducing your food bills.

Written in Doug’s simple easy-to-understand style and tinged with his normal humor, this is a practical manual of growing vegetables in the backyard garden.

What They're Saying

I love your style of writing. Easy, knowledgeable but not condescending. I agree with everything in the book. Great information about each vegetable. The information applies to the beginner gardener or the expert gardener.
-Mrs. Know It All of garden radio

What I love about your nonsense, 'Doug Green' voice.....good grounded information offered from someone who has years of experience in the field.
-Fran Sorin author, garden tv host and garden designer

The book emphasizes common sense and adaptability, general in the first half and specific in the second, with useful details about cultivating a broad range of vegetables. He writes it all in a friendly, shoot-from-the-hip voice that covers all bases without drowning you in data. Again, this is the right style for me, who just wants a few reliable guidelines to follow, plus a fingertip resource when I need particulars about my vegetables of choice.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Garden Reference 28 avril 2011

This e-book has all the basics and more for backyard vegetable gardening in the North. Doug talks about how to amend your soil for optimal growing and how to control weeds organically. There is a lot of good information on compost and how it helps your soil.

He explains how to determine when to plant for optimum harvest times, how much and when to water your garden, and also how to succeed at container gardening. There is a good section on organic pest and animal control and chapters to help you plan and space your plantings. Doug goes through many, many types of vegetables, one by one, explaining when, where, and how to plant each one. He also adds care and maintenance of each vegatable and any additional information that each may require.

Overall this is a great little gardening book with all of the basics you will need to be a successful gardener. I have a lot of gardening books, but, I can see myself going back to this reference more frequently due to its straightforward and succinctly organized format.

And, as always, Doug's two most important rules of gardening are: It's supposed to be FUN and it isn't rocket science!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The truck gardening book that doesn't intimidate! 2 mai 2011

This book contained all of the information I needed to not only put together my raised bed, but to do a much better job than I had thought I could here in New England. Doug Green's clear, down to earth (pun intended) information and advice did not remove the science: it clarified, organized and made the science accessible without touching any confidence I may have had in undertaking this project in my new yard. Doug Green makes suggestions on how to choose and where to acquire plants which has redirected my thinking. The second half of the book is coverage of dozens of vegetables with their particular needs--AND HE INCLUDED ESCAROLE!!!! I get excited because it is my favorite bitter green to braise with pine nuts and raisins in the late summer! I can't wait to plant (but Doug says to wait) and the pages of my Kindle won't get tattered as I refer to his advice to plan, plant, tend the soil, plant some more and enjoy the fresh summer meals to come! My only wish is that I can find a book to read about a vegetable gardener who solves murder mysteries while watching the garden grow.

It's refreshing to have someone not only acknowledge the realities of northern gardening, but also guides you on how to deal with them. A must-have for every gardener who lives in a short-season climate.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great on advice on specific vegetables 4 avril 2014

This books has very specific advice for those of us who grow in zone 5 or lower. Would have liked to have had more info on gardening in raised beds but the advice on problems in planting some seeds before the soil warms up was great since I have made this mistake on more than one occasion. You need to convert from C to F in temperature degrees and from cm to inches (some conversions are given) but the info on specific vegetables is the best that I have seen and very practical. He talks of the need to adding compost but gives no advice on how to make compost in the north, especially in urban gardens.
