Biographie de l'auteur

David Frenkiel and Luise Vindahl fell in love in Rome and returned to Stockholm where they became a couple and had their daughter, Elsa. The blog they started in 2009, "Green Kitchen Stories," has been featured on Design Sponge, the Kitchn, Saveur, and Babble and won a Saveur best blog award.

I love this cookbook. Some of my favorite recipes so far: sushi explosion, zucchini pasta with marinated mushrooms and cashew sauce, mango and coconut tacos, coconut banana almond cupcakes with hazelnut cream cheese dressing, and the goat cheese beet wraps. The different sections include meals that are good on the go as well as meals that are fast or meals that are most of a commitment (but totally worth it). I have loved reading their blog and now love reading their cookbook because I appreciate their philosophy of limiting dairy and gluten, though still using those things in their meals (and any recipe could be changed to either include these or take them out based on your preference). Also, ever recipe has a color photograph, which is something I always want to see in a cookbook.

I looked for this book after I learned of the Cauliflower pizza recipe. Although, I must say if you are looking at this book and their book "The Green Kitchen" know that they are the same book. Same recipes, same pictures, right down to the same page #'s.

I've been reading David and Luise's blog for years and bought the cookbook immediately when it came out. It has a great "Basics" section at the beginning, with simple instructions for how to sprout grains, cook dried beans, make clarified butter, yogurt, etc., which is great for beginning cooks. For people who love to spend time in the kitchen, the "Family Dinners" section has recipes for big meals, the kind you spend all afternoon working on and then serve with pride. The recipes are very easy to follow and flexible enough to accommodate substitutions. They're good everyday recipes, for cooks who want to find interesting ideas and combinations, and then twist them to use whatever ingredients are at hand. The book itself is art - it's printed on heavy paper and the photographs are stunning. It would make a lovely gift for a vegetarian friend or family member.

I wanted a book with basic, enjoyable vegetarian recipes composed of common grocery store items and no preaching. The stories by this family are delightful. Most of the items can be found in our local grocery. Usually, another item can be substituted for ones i can't find locally. While many, if not all, of these recipes are online at the couple's site, some of my favorite recipes aren't in the book. I recommend both the book and their web site for some of the best vegetarian recipes I've ever found. My favorite online recipe not in the book is their Green Kitchen Stories Holiday Stuffed Pumpkin. While we'll probably never be complete vegetarians, between their online site and this book, I have many excellent choices for our meatless meal nights.

First of all, I noticed how different their approach was to vegetarian cooking and eating. The absence of meat is not what ties their recipes in this cookbook together, but a generally relaxed attitude to healthful eating. It could be that they are Scandinavian and the foods available to them emphasize different things than here in the U.S. It could also be that he, Frenkiel has been vegetarian for over half his life, but of a self-admitted junk food variety (will eat it as long as it doesn't have meat) prior to meeting Vindahl. She, Vindahl, on the other hand, has the healthy selective palate who happened to eat high quality organic meat before they met. Now their cookbook recipes has a lot of good raw and cooked vegetable options supplemented with nuts, seeds and moderate amounts of whole grains. Nothing seems crazy in this healthy context, even the pizza made with a cauliflower crust! This book is not for everyone, and if people need to get more familiar with their philosophy and recipes, I recommend looking at their website: If you need another reason to buy this book, the photographs are gorgeous as the ones on their website.
