Présentation de l'éditeur

First, they took away her command. Then they took away her freedom. But they couldn't take away her duty and honor. Now they want her back.

Captain Ashlyn Shaw has survived two years in a brutal military prison. Now those who betrayed her are offering the chance for freedom. All she has to do is trust them not to betray her and her people again. If she can do that, and if she can survive the war that looms on the horizon, she can reclaim her life and get the vengeance she's dreamed of for so long.

But only if she can forget the betrayal and do her duty.

Biographie de l'auteur

I’m older than 20 and younger than death and that’s all you’ll get from me about my age. After all, it’s not polite to ask a woman how old she is. I’m a mother, a daughter and was a wife. I’ve spent most of my life in the South and love to travel. The only problem with that is my dog always thinks I’ve abandoned him when I do and it takes weeks to reassure the poor thing and my cat resents the fact I came back before he could figure out a way to kill the dog and hide the body. My house is haunted – it is, really. I swear it. What else explains the table that plays music and the light that comes on by itself? – but it’s mine and I love it. Okay, I’m a little strange. But that makes life interesting.

Ever have a book you were reading, even though you had no business making time to read, and you resented life for intruding and making you have to stop every few pages? Yeah, Vengeance From Ashes is like that. I'm a huge fan of tightly-written, compelling mil-SF, and it's darned hard to find. Even the Honor Harrington series finally got so bloated I couldn't bother with it. This story returns to the kind of story I fell for, the hero who does, even when she has done more than anyone could ask of her, and who puts off her own vengeance, to serve her world one more time. I understand this is the beginning of a series, and for me, the beginning of a beautiful friendship with characters I can't wait to see more of.

Someone said it was simplistic... it is, sort of. I could put my "critic" hat on and find all sorts of things wrong with it but it wouldn't be a fair assessment. Schall is a pro writer. Vengeance from Ashes is an adventure, not a political or military thriller, though there's plenty of military action and political intrigue. In many ways Vengeance is a call-back to those days when Science Fiction was bigger than life and we loved it.

Schall gives us plenty of hints that something bigger is going on, but wraps up the immediate problems and initial story arc in a satisfying way. While I've never been a Marine, I'm a vet, and the military culture as portrayed didn't strike me as wrong, as sometimes happens. I don't know if Schall has military experience or not, but if not, he's paying attention, so that's good. There were spots where I'd have made different technical choices and I did get the giggles when I read where "Angel" got her call sign. But there is an important bottom line here and it's this...

I opened Vengeance from Ashes at bed time just to check out how the Kindle cloud reader worked... I read a few pages... and finished the book at 3:30 am.

When a story keeps you up all night, all else is pointless nit-picking.

The few authors I know aren't fond of being compared to other authors but hey, that's how we readers think. In this case, I'll compare "Vengeance from Ashes" favorably to David Weber's earlier, compact works. The title puns on the hero's name--Ash--who was railroaded two years ago by a military court martial to cover up stupid and illegal orders by her superiors that got most of Ash's command killed. She's sent to a prison planet that's a nice slice of Hell, which is where we find her. Her sense of honor and obligation to the troops who were sent to prison with her have kept Ash sane and, if anything, sharpened her feelings about duty. When her friends in the military get Ash's conviction overturned and she's returned to duty, the people whose financial interests led to the situation in the first place.

Like Weber, there are believable, human characters, even among the baddies, and the military aspects are reasonably accurate. Ash's self-reconstruction from almost-broken prisoner to military commander was very well written, though I would have liked to get into her head more. I also would have liked a greater understanding of just why she's so well-respected by the people around her. There are dialog snippets that touch on this, but greater explanation or a flashback or three in the right places would have helped a lot.

While they don't take away from the story overall, some observations: There's not a lot of science here; this is more of a military thriller than a sci-fi novel, interplanetary travel notwithstanding. Also, some of the surprises could have been foreshadowed, a technique I always enjoy, as it motivates me to re-read the story to pick up the references. The linearity of the plot and the gaps in back story were really the deciders that kept me from giving this five stars.

As always, I'm pleased to read a story with few (there are always at least a couple) typos, particularly when I'm such a manticore (Ha! Weber reference!!) when the proofing is bad.

Overall, a very good read. Sam, please consider adding a bit more background on the central characters. A bit more science in the universe would always be appreciated, as well. I'm not looking for a Weber-verse, but some indication that science has affected day-to-day life over the next few thousand years would be good.

Vengeance From Ashes is the first military science fiction book from author Sam Schall in the Honor and Duty series. It’s a solid piece of storytelling, and a compelling work of fiction that will be enjoyed by any fan of MilSF.

Ashlyn Shaw was a former Marine captain now incarcerated on fabricated charges and shunted off to the deepest, darkest hole they could find: the Tarsus Penal Colony. Condemned to five years of solitary confinement and practically left for dead, Shaw is surprised when she is suddenly transferred out of the penal colony and back planet side. FleetCom (the military) wants her, though she does not know why, and until she does, she will not trust anybody.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear to the former marine that there has a been a change in the government which had locked her up and made her disappear. A former admiral who had supported her even though she had been on trial was elected on the promise of clearing the charges the captain was under, as well as reforming the government as a whole. But while Shaw is being informed of all the happenings in the two years she has been “in the dark”, an attack by unknown perpetrators occurs in the capitol. Shaw, along with members of her former unit, the “Devil Dogs”, must try and protect a senator and repel the mysterious attackers.

Sometimes when you read a story, you seem to find yourself in the middle of something grand. You get to reading, eagerly awaiting the back story to propel the novel (as a whole) forward. The only problem I had with this book is that it seems like this it is the middle section and I missed the beginning. It’s not bad, per se. It just feels like I had missed something very, very important. Once I was able to break through that sensation (about 20 pages in or so) it was smooth sailing from there.

There is plenty of suspense in the novel, and enough background action to lay down the authenticity of the Devil Dogs and what they do. In the end, however, the story is about a Marine captain doing everything in her power to protect those who love her, and those who are loyal to her.

A positive read, one I enjoyed.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good first book 9 mai 2014

Let me start by saying that I greatly enjoyed the book. I don't want any criticism to make people shy away from purchasing it.

That being said, I would like a bit more of a challenge for the protagonist. I want a bit more conflict. This is my personal opinion, but I think a bit more struggle and strife would have given the book a five-star rating instead of a four.

Still, all in all it's a good read, and I enjoyed it while sitting on my porch with a cigar and a glass of whiskey.
