Although I've seen other books on this subject matter and they're more the "coffee table" size, this book is filled to the brim with a gorgeous selection of pictures and photos. Also; the narrative - which is quite substantial - is very interesting and informative.

I've long been fascinated by the Viennese avant-garde of 1900 and have tons of books on the subject, which I suppose is natural for someone who studied history in this part of the world. Yes, I've read Carl Schorske's Fin de Siecle Vienna, too. It was required reading in one of my courses. But I seem to remember that book being much more text heavy than this one. This book seems to have many more images, like a scaled-down coffee table book, which I appreciate. This isn't a book that you start at the beginning and read to the end, either. The temptation is too great to thumb through it, stop at images, read the captions, maybe read the accompanying text. You can easily lose track of the time (and the 21st century) "reading" the book this way, admiring the art work and studying the photography. In this regard, this book is like time-travel experience. I especially appreciate the prominent space given to Egon Schiele, who technically was not part of the era, though he was influenced by those who were. The frustration and edginess immediately following the more whimsical Secessionist period (and leading up to and following WWI) is very telling. Overall, a beautiful book, one that I'm proud to have in my personal library.

Every aspect of the elements in the book's title is examined in detail with superb illustrations. Much of what the author treats is still visible in Vienna a century later.

This is a sumptuous compendium of all disciplines of the Viennese culture and arts from my favorite era. It's a beautifully designed and printed book jam-packed with visuals--what a lushly rich era in so many ways. I especially love the historic photographs. I wish I could put my hands on some actual issues of Ver Sacrum--that would make for a beautiful book, too.

Excellent Book for a student or anyone interested in this time period. I got it for my architectural history project and it had incredible resources to get it done. Very beautiful book.
