HASH(0xa2bfc948) étoiles sur 5 Amazing soundtrack for a Fantastic animated series; Yuji Ohno's score a key ingredient in the greatness of the Lupin III 15 février 2012
Par Nauseous Nocturne - Publié sur Amazon.com
Lupin the Third is a hardcore classic in the world of Japanese animation, and those who've had the fortune of watching it frequently regard it as one of the best animated shows yet made. Of course, the show is much more than the sum of its parts, but one of its most stand-out qualities has always been its music, particularly for the second series. Composed by famed Japanese jazz man Yuji Ohno in the late '70s, the shows original score is best described as a romantic and modestly decadent hybrid of jazz, '70s soul, funk, tinges of disco, samba & bossa nova, '60s spy movie music, tropical, and contemporary pop. There's even touches of japanese folk here and there. No doubt, Lupin the Third's score is nothing short of eclectic, but give how old this music is the question arises; is any of it listenable, and if not, just how dated is it.
Truth is, the music on this disc is beyond listenable. It's fantastic. Granted, what's on here is very much 'of it's time', so to speak. The show's score utilizes some of the most recognizable, and frankly, effective tropes of '60s-'70s era popular and world music to accompany the globe-trotting adventures of the shows mischievous lead. It's contemporary elements do not solely define it however, at least no where near as much as its composers impeccable ear for rhythm, melody, and atmosphere.
The sound-scapes of this album will likely conjure images of exotic locations, wide open expanses, sprawling urban locales, perilous encounters, secret grottoes, late night schemes, romantic getaways, and perpetual adventure in the minds of most who give it a listen, regardless of any prior knowledge of its visual source. Indeed, The tv program from which it stems is no different, essentially being a Bond/Pulp-Adventure fiction inspired series of capers by a clever, fun-loving criminal who travels the world procuring whatever rare or valuable object catches his eye. But like I said earlier, prior knowledge or viewing of Lupin the Third isn't a prerequisite for enjoying its soundtrack. Given the strength of the material presented on this disc and the distinctiveness of each separate song, the music stands up for itself with perfect balance. The only possible criticism that could be levied at it are its contemporary musical stylings, which bear the unmistakable trademark of the '70s. If you plan on cranking this up on your car stereo you're bound to attract a few suspicious glances, which shouldn't be any bother to you if you happen to like the music that much. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that even though this soundtrack is composed of nothing but good music, its palatability is all a matter of preference. Fans of 'Good' music in general will appreciate it, lovers of vintage '70s sounds will eat it right up, but it's up in the air for everyone else. All I can say, with all the objectivity I can muster, mind you, is that this is one of the best soundtracks ever created for a tv show, and if you're a fan of authentic '70s music you would do well not to pass this up. While you're at it, check out the tv show if possible.
