After watching the Nicole Conn films, "Elena Undone" and "A Perfect Ending", i was looking for a book on the same topic. From the moment i started reading the first pages, i just could not leave this book for more than a few hours. I just got addicted to this wonderfull and breathtaking story. It was pure joy reading this book. I would recommend this book to all those of you out there who love a good lesbian romance story.

Lizbeth Jackson, aged forty and divorced is finally free. Free from her sham of a marriage, free from her cheating ex husband and free to lead her own life in any way she wants to.
She arrives on Ocracoke Island from her home in Durham to spend the following few months studying the Carolina brogue for her masters degree. She is at last fulfilling her dream which had been put on hold all these years after Lizbeth married James and had her daughter Mazie at nineteen. Mazie was the one good thing to come out of the marriage.
Lizberth is renting her late aunt Minnie's cottage from her cousins. Although Lizbeth hasn't been to Ocracoke Island for years, she soon settles in to life on the island, helped by her aunt's friend, Fanny O'Neal, from the cottage opposite.
When Lizbeth sees Fanny's granddaughter outside kissing a woman one night, Lizbeth can't get the sight out of her head. When Lizbeth meets Gray over at Fanny's cottage, Gray starts flirting with her and Lizbeth can't help feeling attracted to her.
Lizbeth and Gray begin to spend time together and Lizbeth finds herself falling for Gray in a big way. She decides to throw caution to the wind and go with her feelings. So what if Gray is a woman and Lizbeth has only ever been out with men? Gray however, doesn't want to allow herself to fall in love. She knows Lizbeth will leave the island to go back to her life in Durham and she feels she can't take the hurt and pain this would cause her. Gray has been hurt badly in the past. She knows what she feels for Lizbeth now would break her heart beyond repair if she actually fell in love with her totally.
But the inevitable happens, Lizbeth and Gray sleep together and they fall in love. But the course of their love is to be rudely interrupted by an ex lover turning up, just when things are going so well. The course of events that follow could have a tragic outcome. Will Lizbeth and Gray's love be able survive the consequences of the events that follow?
At last, another delightful romance from the pen of R.E Bradshaw. For me the moral of this book is that yes, life can really begin at forty. Yes, you can start over again from scratch. This book gives hope for anyone that finds themselves in this situation. It is very true to everyday life. This book is wonderfully refreshing and a real must for lovers of fine romance. The descriptions of Ocracoke Island just made me want to book a holiday there. The book is so well written and descriptive, that as a reader I felt at ease among the characters, just like I was viewing it all as it actually happened among friends. I was right there with them. The characters are adorable. The book is a real page turner from the very first page right through to the last page. After each book from R.E Bradshaw, I wonder how she can top the last one, how she can make her stories any better? Well, I have to say she manages it somehow, all her books are nothing but consistently good. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite among R.E Bradshaw's books. I adore them all. They will always have a permanent place on my book shelves, this one included.

I have fallen in love with all of the characters in Decky Bradshaw's books and the North Carolina shore she so magically describes. Bradshaw fully develops both her characters and the backstory so the reader moves through the story with the feeling of participation rather than being on the outside looking in.

I absolutely swooned when, in a passionate moment, Lizbeth whispers to Gray "Fall in love with me" --- and I did. The scene where Lizbeth, a well-off, socially prominent "former" straight-woman, lays claim to Gray by kissing her in front of God and everyone at the local community watering hole is priceless.

There are tons of run-of-the-mill mediocre lesbian romances available -- and this isn't one of them. What sets Bradshaw's books apart is the charm, humor, and engaging way she presents her characters. She's just a really, really damn good writer.

Her books have heart.

Happy Reading - Curtie

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another fabulous North Carolina story 20 avril 2011

Waking Up Gray is another story with vivid characters and great images of North Carolina. Beware: you might want to drop everything and just splurge on a wonderful holiday at the Outer Banks. Great characters (some old friends from former books as well) and sound story make for another wonderful read by RE Bradshaw.

And thanks for offering this book in a format which may be transferred to non-Kindle e-readers.

Waking Up Gray, is another wonderful addition to the list of R.E. Bradshaw's books. The previous four books have been little gems, but Waking Up Gray just has that extra final polish on it that made it a joy to read. The best compliment I can give to show how much I enjoyed it, is that as soon as I finished, I immediately read it again.

Lizbeth Jackson is on the final stretch of starting a new life at 40. She's spent the last five years, after divorcing a cheating husband, studying Linguistic Anthropology and will soon graduate with a Master's Degree as soon as she finishes her thesis paper. She intends to study the Carolina Brogue on Ocracoke Island, where she spent her childhood holidays. The first day there she meets Fanny, who lives across the road with her granddaughter, Gray. Lizbeth is shocked to find herself unexpectedly attracted to the flirtatious Gray and can't help but flirt back. It doesn't take long for Lizbeth to fall deeper and deeper for Gray, once she gets over being attracted to another female. Gray, despite her reputation for only having casual flings, seems to want more from their budding relationship, if only she can overcome the ghost of her past.

I loved everything about this book. The characters are all enjoyable, Fanny is the wise, funny old grandmother everyone wishes they had to give them advice, Lizbeth's daughter Mazie is funny and accepting and knows her mother well, there's even an appearance from Molly Kincaid, the well-known lesbian attorney who we know from a couple of other Bradshaw books. The attraction between Gray and Lizbeth is sizzling hot, the romance builds wonderfully, with just a little miss-communication and angst to make you appreciate the romance all the more. And as always with Bradshaw's books, the landscape itself plays a role in the story. Even though I've never been anywhere near the US, I feel like I've traveled along with the characters through the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Along with her other books, Waking Up Gray definitely makes it onto my re-read list. Thanks for the wonderful story :)

I kept wanting to like this story but Lizzie, the straight divorced woman who falls for Gray, was too annoying for me. Her overwrought emotional breakdowns, which happened several times throughout the book, really turned me off. I didn't see what Gray, the island soft butch, saw in Lizzie.
