Onion Dome and Cozy Homes 31 décembre 2013
Par Jayne P. Bowers - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
I ordered this book for my granddaughters to read, and the moment I took it out of the box, I knew I had made a good choice. The cover is colorful and filled with drawings of people, animals, and places all over the world. It’s a pretty book with an inviting format that will surely appeal to children in middle childhood.

The writer begins his walk in NYC, and right away I noticed the ubiquitous yellow taxi that’s associated with the Big Apple. There is a big hotel, a bridge (Brooklyn?), and the last few letters of a museum (GENHEIM). Right away I noticed the flaps that hid other scenes, and I knew that kids would love this.

From New York, the traveler goes to France where he says, “Merci,” and before the day ends, he hears gondoliers greeting him with,”Ciao!" in Italy. Traveling on, he hears samba drums and bhangra beats, sees brilliant saris and relaxed beach bums, and experiences drizzly streets in England and neon signs in Japan. While I was able to recognize the scenes because of travel and reading, a young child might need a little help in figuring out some countries, like where the "onion domes and cozy homes" are.

Sometimes children (adults too!) think their little corner of the world is “the world,” but this book tells a different tale. While the book demonstrates that although we all have different languages and different ways to live and work and play, we are a lot more similar than dissimilar.

Disappointed 4 janvier 2015

It was not really what I expected..Too simplified..Not enough real detail for a child who is interested in the differences in the world and its countries. Drawings were interesting, disappointed in what they talked about, and the details the book gave on cultures, and life in different places. The child I gave it to, who is seven years old, read it in five minutes and never picked it up again..

Africa challenged--Walk This World Misses the Mark! 16 juillet 2015
Par Globe Trotter - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
My 3 1/2 year old son received this as a gift. He reallyjkes it, and it is beautifully illustrated, but every time I read it I get annoyed that all of the places she visits are recognizable countries--the US, France, Australia, Japan, England, Russia, Brazil, India, Italy--and then there's Africa! Really? As if Africa is one country. It perpetuates a stereotype about the ignorance of the west when it comes to Africa. I was very disappointed. Admittedly, it would be hard to pick any one country, just as I imagine it was for South America and Asia (for which she chose two--near and far, no middle). But, to fail to do so sadly make's the author look uninformed or lazy.

Pretty book that explores cities around the globe 24 mars 2014
Par Carole P. Roman - Publié sur Amazon.com

Lovely renditions of a variety countries that invite children to explore and discover the many differences we enjoy. Beautifully illustrated, each page is a cornucopia of colors and subjects with interesting flaps making it interactive. A small poem accompanies each city. I wish there was more information per page, like flaps with small facts to pique young minds. A pretty book, with great potential to open discussions about the world and the people who live on it.

Awesome Illustrations 22 juin 2014

I bought this book just from the cover image after Amazon suggested it to me. I love the colorful, images of our world in this book. I gave it to my nephew for his birthday. Everyone else seemed to agree that the illustration is great. I will say, theres not much of a story line. I see it as more of a visual than literary book. But there are about a million hidden windows for kids to find, which I always liked as a kid, so I'm sure my nephew will enjoy it.
