Returning to the U.S. after 20 years in England, Iowa native Bryson decided to reconnect with his mother country by hiking the length of the 2100-mile Appalachian Trail. Awed by merely the camping section of his local sporting goods store, he nevertheless plunges into the wilderness and emerges with a consistently comical account of a neophyte woodsman learning hard lessons about self-reliance. Bryson (The Lost Continent) carries himself in an irresistibly bewildered manner, accepting each new calamity with wonder and hilarity. He reviews the characters of the AT (as the trail is called), from a pack of incompetent Boy Scouts to a perpetually lost geezer named Chicken John. Most amusing is his cranky, crude and inestimable companion, Katz, a reformed substance abuser who once had single-handedly "become, in effect, Iowa's drug culture." The uneasy but always entertaining relationship between Bryson and Katz keeps their walk interesting, even during the flat stretches. Bryson completes the trail as planned, and he records the misadventure with insight and elegance. He is a popular author in Britain and his impeccably graceful and witty style deserves a large American audience as well.

Bryson who is not a hiker at the start of the book and who is not really in shape for it decides in the company of his friend Katz (who is even less in shape) to hike the AT (the Appalachian trail)and the wonderful thing about it, is that they make it, well nearly... Bryson did a lot of research on the history of this trail and relates it in an interesting and amusing way.
The day to day hiking is hard (especially at the beginning) but the author does not seem to make a big deal about it.... His friend Katz is also bringing a lot of entertainment and I have to say that if he had not been there with Bryson, the story would not have been the same...

Pour les amateurs de Bryson, je pense que je n'apprendrais rien.
Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, il rentre dans le détail du détail, toujours avec des explications croustillantes, la petite anecdote qui rend un livre d'histoire attractif ou non.
On apprend beaucoup de détails pas forcément utiles mais très sympa pour la culture générale.
Mais cette foule de détails ne plaira pas forcément à tout le monde.
Je le recommande pour les plus curieux

de cet humour incomparable. Ayant vécu en amérique du nord, les ouvrages de Bill Bryson me touchent particulièrement. Je les conseille à tout les amis des américains. On y découvre toutes les facettes et façades de ce grand pays et de son peuple dans un ton entrainant qui les dépeigne non sans critique sévère, mais avec suffisamment de tendresse.
