Présentation de l'éditeur

Discharged from the Barrayan Military Academy, Miles Vorkosigan chances on a jumpship with a rebellious pilot and arranges to take over the ship. Events escalate from there, and soon Miles is commander of a mercenary fleet and reinvents himself as Admiral Naismith of the Dendarii Mercenary Army. “The pace is breathless, the characterizations thoughtful and emotionally powerful… Highly recommended,” writes Booklist.

"Bujold's first book SHARDS OF HONOR was called 'possibly the best first novel of the year' by the Chicago Sun Times. THE WARRIOR'S APPRENTICE is even better."
- Fantasy Review

"The action is fast, furious and delicious... Best of all, Bujold achieves a fine balance of comedy with intelligence, heroics with loss, so THE WARRIOR'S APPRENTICE goes far beyond simple entertainment."
- Locus Magazine

"The pace is breathless, the characterization thoughtful and emotionally powerful, and the author's narrative technique and command of language compelling. Highly recommended."
- Booklist

“Bujold continues to prove what marvels genius can create out of basic space operatics.”
- Library Journal

“Bujold is not just a master of plot, she is a master of emotion.”
- SF Site

“Bujold is one of the best writers of SF adventure to come along in years.”
- Locus Magazine

“A superb craftsman and stylist, Ms. Bujold is well on her way to becoming one of the great voices of speculative fiction.”
- Rave Reviews

“Bujold has a gift, nearly unique in science fiction, for the comedy of manners.”
- Chicago Sun Times

“Superb far-future saga.”
- Publishers Weekly on the 'Vorkosigan' series

Bujold's "work remains among the most enjoyable and rewarding in contemporary SF."
- Publishers Weekly

"Bujold is also head and shoulders above the ruck of current fantasists and well as science-fictionists."

Lois McMaster Bujold was born in 1949, the daughter of an engineering professor at Ohio State University, from whom she picked up her early interest in science fiction. She now lives in Minneapolis, and has two grown children. She began writing with the aim of professional publication in 1982. She wrote three novels in three years; in October of 1985, all three sold to Baen Books, launching her career. Bujold went on to write many other books for Baen, mostly featuring her popular character Miles Naismith Vorkosigan, his family, friends, and enemies. Her books have been translated into twenty-one languages. Her fantasy from Eos includes the award-winning Chalion series and the Sharing Knife series.

Action and humor SF at a decent best. Bujold is able both to paint action, at a decent pace, and characters, at a decent depth.

Should be at least 6 stars. There is simply no one who does it better. I have read every book Ms. Bujold has written multiple times (and a couple something like 20 times) since she began her career in the early 1980's. Why? The characters. I get to missing them and go back and read the books again and again just so I can spend time in their company. With my Kindle, I have bookmarked passages that I have read scores of times. The people are fascinating and compelling. They make you laugh, they make you cry. They amaze you with their wit, their humanity, their foibles and their genius. Even though I know every nuance of the plots, I go back to visit the characters again and again.

Warrior's Apprentice is the beginning of the Miles Vorkosigan saga with him at the age of 17. He is physically stunted because of prenatal fetal damage. He is the scion of a military/noble family in a world that practices infanticide for children with mutant genes. He fails for physical reasons to gain entry into the military academy of his home world and takes a galactic trip to get away from his disappointment. From one misadventure to another, he becomes a mercenary admiral. He does it by wit and because he has an uncanny ability to see what people could become and challenges them to go there. Some people grow plants; he grows people.

Ms. Bujold is a fine writer who uses words carefully. What some writers need chapters to say, she convey in a couple of pages and leaves memorable quotes by the dozen. You are fortunate if you are new to Ms. Bujold. When I began reading her work with Warrior's Apprentice, it was her second or third book, and craftwoman that she is, it often was years between stories and they were often out of order. You have the advantage of seeing the banquet of her work spread before you and can move from one book to the next in chronological rather than published order. Enjoy the journey.

One of the best sf series written. Miles Vorkosagan has the spunk of Han Solo, the charm of Bill Clinton, the command presence of Picard, and no girl friend. Depth, humour, mystery, and space ships. I read this book more than once. Got my Mom to read it. Got my wife to read it. You should read it.

Some books you read once and that's enough but this one and the whole saga sit on bookshelf and get dusted off at least once a year for rereading. Complex, multidimensional characters are excellent. You won't be sorry for meeting Vorkosigan.

This book is such a great story. It grabs you early and keeps you wondering how Miles is going to get out of his latest scrape. I originally read this story in paperback MANY years ago and still have it somewhere ion my bookshelves in the basement. I saw this on special on Kindle and thought it would be a good thing to re-acquaint myself with the series, I had forgotten just what a good story line the Miles Vorkosigan saga is. I couldn't put it down. If you like classic science fiction, you won't be disappointed in this book. It is a good starting point to the rest of the series. the author's notes at the end give you the chronological sequence of the books, which is somewhat important as they originally were not published in chronological order. Having said that, you can read the novels separately and out of sequence, they are all stand alone stories. What you might miss is how MIles got to that particular point in time.

I highly recommend this book.

I have all of the Miles Vorkosigan books and for ease of reading I am now buying all of them in electronic form. The stories are full of action with the most delightful protagonist I know. Miles stumbles from crisis to crisis with brilliance and the most incredible HEART. For anyone who has not read the series, I simply cannot recommend it highly enough.
