What if Romeo and Juliet had succeeded?

Two warring families, one widow who has forgotten her family's hatred, one powerful knight determined to reclaim his family's castle and a wife to rule it beside him. No one will stop him not her father, his king or the lady herself.

"Readers who deplore romances set in the Medieval period that are false to the times will appreciate [THE WARRIOR'S WIFE]. The practices, traditions, and attitudes of the era are realistically presented [and] the political climate of the time ... well-woven into the plot. ... a worthy addition to this author's list. I look forward to reading the next medieval by this talented author."
--Lesley Dunlap, The Romance Reader

5.0 étoiles sur 5 New Denise Domning fan 26 mars 2012

I originally bought one of the Season books for my Kindle. Loved every minute of my reading the story. I was fascinated with the way the story progressed page by page. The main charactors were fantastic but then so were some of the other charactors. When I got to the end, I immediately went on line and downloaded the rest of the Season series. Needless to say, in the next three books I was introduced to each of the brothers and their ladies. What a family. Ok, so I read all four of those, then had to read the three Warrior stories and by the time I finished those, I was in love all of those charactors. I will be starting 'Almost Perfect' followed by 'Lady in White' after which I will be looking for more. Denise has a way of drawing you into the story and leading you where you need to go without confusing you or losing you. I have to say that her description of the times, places and people added so much to the reality of putting yourself back in the time period. Sometimes I actually felt like I was there and could feel the injustice of some things, the beauty of other things as well as the feelings of the people.
I look forward to many more such stories from Denise. Wonderful story teller.

The Warriors Wife is one of the three-book Warrior series which includes Warrior's Maiden, Warrior's Wife, and Warrior's Game. The Warrior books are Denise Domning's second medieval romances series. The first series is the Seasons (read my reviews). Unlike her first series, these books do not have to be read in any particular order.

History and Romance are my favorite topics. So I really enjoy Historical Romance! "Historical romances", however, rarely contain much history. The main characters are usually 21st century people in old time houses and clothes. This is particularly true of romances, which take place in the Middle Ages. When I read them, I enjoy the romance and hate the history.

Unlike most novels set in the Middle Ages, Ms. Domning's characters are true to their time period. They think and act like people living at the time in which they live. In addition, the books are replete with Medieval detail. Ms. Domning's attention to detail and to realistic Medieval settings and characters plus her riveting plots have persuaded me award her my private first place among Medieval Romance writers.

The plot of each of Ms. Domning's books revolves around problematic aspects of medieval culture. Being romances, the main characters end up happy and in love. But the aspects of medieval culture she examines probably resulted in many unhappy endings.

The story takes place just after the Pope lifted his long sanction against King John. During the time of the sanction, English churches were not allowed to perform marriages. Therefore marriage is on everyone's mind!

This is probably the most complex Medieval period book that Ms. Domning has written. In it Ms. Domning addresses many facets of Medieval culture. The focus is on the economic basis for aristocratic Medieval marriage. But many other topics appear. They include child marriage, sexual ignorance of young girls, father-daughter relationships, family feuds, the plight of third sons, jousting, deep friendships among boys who fostered together, and intentional trapping of young girls by men intent on obtaining a dowry through forced marriage.

The end of the book degenerates into a chase. The rest of the book was complex and interesting. I think that part deserves 5 stars+. Although I enjoyed the chase, I thought it detracted from the originality and brilliance of the rest of the book. That is why I only give the book 4 stars.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Really wanted to love it. 4 avril 2013

I have always loved this era - knights and castles and, oh, the clothes - so I jumped with glee when I found this book. This could have been one of my new favorite books. It almost was. While Lady Adele wasn't always right, I learned to love her and wished Kate had listened to her more.

The downfall of this book was the sex scene. I don't like sex in my books - most often it slows the plot down - and I really don't like stupid, selfish, lost control, premarital sex. That aside, it was just dumb. After rescuing her from the kidnapping villain, and knowing full well there's an army amassing to stop the him as well, he pulls her down into a pile of soggy leaves in the middle of the forest during a horrific rain storm to sate their lust. Yeah, that's romantic. Let's risk our health and recapture for a quick romp 'cause we have no self-control. Oy. She regrets it almost immediately, wishing she'd listened to Lady Adele. Hmmm . . .

Otherwise, it was fun and fluffy and just the right amount of angst. Don't believe I'll seek out the rest of the series, though.
