Présentation de l'éditeur

A near death experience is only the beginning of Jeff Resnick’s troubles. Family comes to town, but one of them, a nephew who reminds Jeff of the thugs who mugged him, has unsettled him. He's on edge. The fact that his brother has taken possession of an expensive boat through an IRS auction takes his mind off the bad vibes he's getting from other relatives. But that yacht holds a deadly secret, one destined to turn his world upside down. Will Jeff figure out the puzzle before his vision of near death becomes a reality?

Biographie de l'auteur

The immensely popular Booktown Mystery series is what put Lorraine Bartlett’s pen name Lorna Barrett on the New York Times Bestseller list, but it’s her talent -- whether writing as Lorna, or L.L. Bartlett, or Lorraine Bartlett -- that keeps her there. This multi-published, Agatha-nominated author pens the exciting Jeff Resnick Mysteries as well as the acclaimed Victoria Square Mystery series, and now the Tales of Telenia fantasy saga, and has many short stories and novellas to her name(s). I'm a big fan of this author and the Jeff Resnick mysteries. I've read all and find each and everyone good. With the next better than the last. Hope there is more to this series.

After reading this book I felt I had to write a review. Since reviewing a few books, I've found I like reading them much more than reviewing. Thought at one time maybe I could reach Vine status or Top 100, but reading is so much more entertaining for me. I'd still love to receive free books to review, but maybe it's just not in the cards. (Hope the free-book-senders are reading this).

That said, this is a really, really good book. I love Jeffie, Brenda, and Richard. I'm even again warming up to Maggie (Jeff's not so faithful girlfriend).

Jeff, the somewhat fragile, young protagonist, was in big trouble in this story, number six in the series, because he suffered PTSD from the previous (18 months before) mugging experience that brought about his psychic ability, headaches, and problems with his emotions and nerves. When Brenda's judgmental, stern, high-school-principal, humorless twin sister, Evelyn, visited their home in Buffalo, N.Y., because of the impending birth of Richard and Brenda's baby (Jeff's brother and sister-in-law), she brought with her a troubled young nephew (Da-Marr,) who immediately resurrected Jeff's never resolved fear of young men like Da-Marr - because Da'Marr bore an uncanny resemblance to Jeff's main bat-wielding mugger. Jeff and Da'Marr could barely countenance one another and Da'Marr caused as many problems as he could for Jeff. Tension and anger reigned in the household and everyone walked on eggshells, barely tolerating the heavy atmosphere, and wishing the baby would come so they could regain some semblance of their normal lives and the guests could finally go back home.

When Sam - a local newspaper reporter who sometimes unfairly used delicate Jeff - asked him to psychically investigate matters involving a dead white-collar criminal, is when all the action began. As expected, Jeff was drawn into a mystery involving the dead criminal, then found that Richard's purchase of a boat, Da'Marr's selfish, angry sense of entitlement, and his so-called friend's (Sam) story linked together, to nearly cause him to lose his life.

There are many situations and scenarios in this book that will keep you hungrily reading until the end. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story, great characters, thrilling situations, and a bit of mystery. The whole series is worthwhile reading. Lest anyone should think the psychic aspect of the story will be too over the top or silly, please know that everything fits together in a way that won't make you feel as though you're being asked, or persuaded, to believe in the occult, fortune telling, the afterlife, or religion. There are those references, but they merely add texture to Jeff - who is a "sensitive" - and the story.

I love the Jeff Resnick series. The very first book pulled me in and I am thrilled when each new story becomes available.
It was great to catch up with Jeff, his family, and friends in 'Dark Waters'. L.L. Bartlett is extremely good at inspiring emotion with her writing. Honestly, part of the time, while reading this book, the emotion I felt was frustration. Frustration that centered around the incomprehensible way the people in Jeff's life treat him. L.L. Bartlett does not write 'sweetie-sweet' books. They have always had an edge of harsh reality about them, which makes me admire her all the more.
It made me a little sad though that the one person who has always been in Jeff's corner, and who is my favorite character in these books, besides Jeff himself, seemed to turn against him for a bit. I couldn't help but feel irritated that outsiders (and rude interlopers at that) were allowed to run roughshod over this family.

The mystery portion was fair. Parts of the book felt unnecessarily drawn out. The ending was definitely dramatic, however.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down once I started reading it. As always, I found the interpersonal dynamics of the characters to be the main drawing point. One huge thing in this book is the shift in Richard's attitude toward Brenda. I have felt in the past that he did not value her nearly as much as he should. In this tale, however, he is much more loving and appreciative of his wife. Two thumbs up for that!

I look forward to the next Jeff Resnick book.

This story was awesome. I really had a hard time putting it down. But what happened to Sam. Did he get his story? What next?
