Weather and Bird Behaviour is given the publication date of 2004, yet it is the third edition of a book first written in 1984. It takes but a quick glance to see that most of the references date before 1984 and a vast majority before 1994. Yet, I would bet a fair bit that most of the research on the effects of weather on bird migration, nesting success, winter survival, and so forth has been done subsequently. There is much in Berthold (2001) on weather and bird migration that is inexcusably missing from this tome.

Most of the conclusions are rather obvious: storms cause mortatlity during migration, cold weather during breeding season effects breeding success, especially of insectivores, etc. It is nice to see the magnitude of some of these effects, but really, slogging through details of primary research to learn the obvious is not what I want to spend my time on.

What is missing is any (or signficant discussion) of the effects of global warming or El Nino and La Nina events on bird distribution/breeding success. Also, the effects of anomalous weather systems on vagrancy, including that of hurricanes on seabirds, is very sparse or absent. There is little meaningful discussion on the effects of weather systems of a more mundane type (e.g., typical strong fall cold fronts) on bird fallouts and vagrancy either. A quick scan through the journal North American Birds (and its predecssors Field Notes/American Birds) or through Rare Birds in Britain and Ireland by Vinicombe and Cottridge (1996) would have provided much additional information lacking in Weather and Bird Behaviour.

Hopefully, someday, a book summarizing the current knowledge of the effects of weather on birds will be published.
