Although a similar idea to Cecelia Ahern's P.S. I Love You, the emotional aspect of this story is weighed equally with fantastic humour - I laughed and I cried while reading this book. Thoroughly enjoyable. --The Sun newspaper, October 2014

Présentation de l'éditeur

Can a mother’s secret past provide the answers for a daughter’s future?
Celebrity photographer Grace Buchanan has always known that, one day, she’d swap her manic day job for the peace and quiet of her beloved childhood cottage, St Christopher’s – she just didn’t expect it to be so soon.
At the reading of her mother’s will, she’s shocked to learn that she hardly knew Rosamund at all, and that inheriting St Christopher’s hangs on one big – and very inconvenient – condition: Grace must drop everything for two weeks and travel the country with a mysterious stranger – war-weary Royal Marine, Alasdair Finn.
Caught in a brief but perfect moment in time, Grace and Alasdair walk in Rosamund’s footsteps and read her letters at each breathtaking new place. As Grace slowly uncovers the truth about her mother’s incredible life story, Alasdair and Grace can’t help but question their own futures. Will Rosamund’s madcap scheme go to plan or will events take an unexpected turn?
An emotional, fun-filled and adventurous journey of a lifetime.

I found this novel by chance, thanks to a promotion. I hesitated a little because I was not comfortable with the mentions of Grace’s mother’s illness and death (bad memories), but the free sample convinced me I had to know what happened next, and I’m glad I didn’t let it stop me.

I loved the letters, the beautiful places Grace and Alasdair travelled to, and of course seeing them getting closer. It was even funny at times (Alasdair’s right, Grace is priceless).

I would recommend it to anyone who likes romance novels, of course, but also to people who are simply looking for a good book, because there's more to the story than the main characters' mutual attraction.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Choc-lit book you can not go wrong with 6 avril 2015

While Grace is ready to receive her inheritance, she is face with going on a journey one she did not want to go on let alone with someone she didn't know. Alasdair is so caught up in his life an guilt that when he is asked to go on a journey he said yes and now he is wondering if that was the best choice.
I found the book quite predictable some times and I was ready to just roll my eyes and wanted to book done, but my view to that changed quickly. I really really liked this book. There where a few twisted an turns which kept you wanting to change the pages, so I have to say the book is a page turner and worth the read. I also have to say that the language is not to strong but I would say it would be better for either a older teenager. The author did a good job giving chemistry between the characters even though it was only from a one persons view. You really can not go wrong with this book its worth the read for sure.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A romantic journey of a story 26 mars 2014

This emotional, romantic novel was a joy from beginning to end. Grace is a celebrity photographer mourning her beloved mother. But when her mother’s will is read she’s stunned to learn Rosamund has left detailed instructions she’ll have to fulfil in order to inherit the home she grew up in. For 2 weeks she has to travel the country dictated by a series of letters her mother has left with the man who must accompany her. Alasdair is a Royal Marine and old friend of her mother. He’s worn out by war and like Grace is at a crucial point in his life. Together they uncover the many secrets Grace’s mother kept and learn things about themselves they could never have suspected. I loved the journey they went on, both physical and emotional and was rooting for them on so many different levels. This story will draw you in and not let go until the last page.

Grace has recently lost her mother. She wants to return to her childhood home to live a secluded life in the countryside. She loves the home she grew up in and is especially attached to the beautiful wedding cake tree in the garden. Grace expects to inherit the cottage, but her mother has other plans. Even in death she tries to send Grace a message. Grace has to wait six months before the reading of the will. When she's finally ready to hear what it says there's another surprise waiting for her. She's supposed to go on a trip, a journey that takes her to the important places in her mother's life from before Grace was born.

Grace isn't supposed to travel alone. Alasdair is a dear friend of her mother and he's supposed to keep her company, to be her guide and to give Grace her mother's letters. Grace's mother has a lot of surprises for her daughter and Grace starts to wonder how well she really knew her mother. Fortunately Alasdair is handsome and they're getting along well, very well even. Will Grace embrace her mother's inheritance and what will her future look like now that she's learned more about the past?

The Wedding Cake Tree is a fantastic book about a great topic. Grace has to travel to the places that were important in her mother's past. The idea behind is to get to know her mother, but also to get to know herself. Alasdair is great company, but he's also troubled. He needs the trip and some time to relax as his job is really hard. Grace and Alasdair are good for each other and I hoped they would have a future together. Grace also needs to face some facts about her own life and her mother's crazy plan maybe isn't the best way to do it, but it's certainly effective. The crazy trip, the chemistry between Grace and Alasdair and plenty of unexpected twists and turns make this book a joy to read. I liked it a lot and highly recommend it.

I loved the places Melanie took me in The Wedding Cake Tree!! From the sheep to the stars to a sky with different shades of blue, The Wedding Cake Tree was a journey of discovery not only about Grace's mother, but about Grace and Alasdair. With a wide range of emotions, surprises, heart ache and hope, I loved this journey.

Melanie's description of the places and the people are fantastic! She makes everything vivid and easy to picture in my mind, and made me feel like I was right there with Grace and Alasdair.

I felt like I could relate to Grace. Her mother's final request and this trip Grace is to take with Alasdair is unusual, but I could see myself doing the same thing for my mother. As crazy as the whole idea seemed at the time, I was glad Grace did it! I liked the unexpectedness of The Wedding Cake Tree, and the different perspective Grace gets of her mother. I felt like I got to know her mother also. I liked the way she handled it all. This trip seemed to come at a good time for Grace, she seemed to be on the verge of change in her life, and this might be the push she needs...

Alasdair is a quiet hero, charming, entertaining and a bit of a mystery for a while. I really liked who he was and how he was with Grace. There was a definite attraction between them, but their relationship was not rushed. Neither of them were looking or expecting to find each other, both of their futures are unsettled at the moment. Where they went with this was a sweet, heart warming romantic journey. And where it ended up really pulled on my heart and made me feel sad, hopeful and happy all at the same time. A real churning mix of emotions was what made this book so real for me!

There are some great secondary characters in The Wedding Tree, and I liked the intertwining of relationships...that some worked and some just didn't.

Overall I found The Wedding Cake Tree to be a fantastic read that held my interest and really made me feel like I had a vested interest in the outcome! Melanie's writing is smooth, easy to read, and the pace of The Wedding Cake Tree was just right! I'd recommend The Wedding Cake Tree to any woman's fiction reader who likes a strong touch of romance too!

The Wedding Cake Tree by Melanie Hudson is about a woman taking a journey. Grace Buchanan is a photographer. She takes photos of celebrities. Her mother, Rosamund Buchanan, has just passed away and left a very unusual will. Rosamund has set up her will to be read in May. Grace must then go on a specific ten day journey. She will have a companion, Alasdair Finn who has made all the travel arrangements. Grace will receive a letter to read from her mother at different stops and she wants her ashes scattered at these stops.

Grace is very reluctant to go away. It will mean canceling an assignment since the will specifies that Grace has to leave the next day. Her luggage has even been packed for her (or rather new clothes were bought and put in a new suitcase). Grace agrees to go because otherwise she will not inherit the childhood home that she loves.

Grace goes on the journey and discovers that she really did not know her mother. Grace also learns to live and enjoy life. Grace meets a relative she never knew about and falls in love. Grace also learns the significance of the wedding cake tree. It was planted in their backyard and it grows a new tier every year. Rosamund wanted more for her daughter and she hoped that this journey would shake Grace up.

The Wedding Cake Tree is a good story, but not great. I felt it was too long and wordy (whole paragraphs could have been deleted). It also follows the normal romance book formula of girl meets boy, they get to know each other, they have chemistry, fall in love, have fight, break up, and then eventually they get back together. I give The Wedding Cake Tree 3.5 out of 5 stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
