La classe! Rien que le nom des joueurs ! J'avais le vinyl (abimé par les années). Quel plaisir de retrouver Harold Land en si bonne compagnie.

HASH(0x9c80e414) étoiles sur 5 In The Land Of West Coast All-Stars 12 novembre 2000
Par Michael Brad Richman - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Harold Land's "West Coast Blues" may be a one-time gathering of jazz all-stars, but it is one of the best jam sessions in the OJC catalog. This album is quite a departure from his more personal previous effort "The Fox" (see my review), in that Land has to be more of a team player due to the immense talents of his colleagues featured here -- Wes Montgomery on guitar, Joe Gordon on trumpet, and as the album jacket says, "the all-soul rhythm section" of Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. If this seems like an unlikely lineup, you're right it is. This session came together in May 1960 for the Jazzland label (an offshoot of Riverside) when the Cannonball Adderley Quintet (of which Harris, Jones and Hayes were members) was in San Francisco for an extended gig. Wes Montgomery was also living in San Fran and was just beginning to receive acclaim (one wonders if he would have cut this session even a year later -- probably not he would have been too big). Orrin Keepnews then brought Land and Gordon up from L.A. to complete the session. The fact that the rhythm section had played together so frequently provides this jam session with a solid foundation, but it is the magical interplay between Wes, Land and Gordon that really sets this disc on fire. There are three Land originals here (all are excellent) and the title track is Wes Montgomery's composition. Any fan of Land, Montgomery or even Cannonball will thoroughly enjoy this fantastic outing.

HASH(0x9c80e720) étoiles sur 5 East Meets West With Swinging Results 22 janvier 2010
Par Jack Baker - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
West Coast Blues is a stellar meeting of West Coast tenor sax great Harold Land, trumpeter Joe Gordon, and guitarist Wes Montgomery, with the East Coast savvy of pianist Barry Harris, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes. Recorded in May of 1960 in San Francisco while Harris, Jones, and Hayes were in town with Cannonball Adderly, this fortuitous meeting resulted in a fabulous album.

Let me just say that I am absolutely in love with this session. Harold Land and company are melodic, soulful, and swing like mad. In my opinion, the stand out track is the beautiful and haunting opener, "Ursula", penned by Land. The sextet also tackles Charlie Parker's "Klactoveedsedstne"(whew!), Wes Montgomery's yet to be classic "West Coast Blues", the Herzog/Holiday piece "Don't Explain", and two other Land compositions, "Terrain" and "Compulsion". Harris, Jones, Hayes, and Montgomery I've heard on other albums and are as solid as ever. Joe Gordon plays a mean trumpet, but the highlight for me was the tenor playing of the leader. Mr. Land has a smooth tone and an ear for the right phrasing. He never overplays, but delivers stirring bop track after track.

West Coast Blues is a prime example of musicians at the top of their game. Despite the quickly arranged sessions, the sextet plays like it's been together for years, a mark of superior musicianship. This is one of the most enjoyable jazz albums I've ever heard and would heartily recommend it to anyone.

HASH(0x9c80e894) étoiles sur 5 An object lesson in the importance of sequencing 9 décembre 2008
Par Matthew Watters - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
The other reviewer is spot-on and absolutely correct about how great this album is. Therefore, I wanted to add a comment on a side issue: the importance of sequencing to the reception of an album. Remember that this recording was released in the LP era, with a Side A and a Side B. If I had bought it in those days, I would ALWAYS play Side B first, beginning with Wes Montgomery's funky title tune (and, remember, in 1960, soul jazz was just beginning to take off), followed by two brilliantly intricate Harold Land originals clearly influenced by his pal Elmo Hope but which nevertheless seem more accessible than anything Hope composed. If Side B had led off this album, I maintain that it would have been far more highly regarded by posterity. Instead, Side A begins with a nice (but less challenging) Land original, followed by the album's safest track (a Charlie Parker cover) and an atmospheric standard (Billie's "Don't Explain"). Listen to the album in the order I suggest (tracks 4 through 6, then tracks 1 through 3), and you'll hear how much more groundbreaking it sounds.....

HASH(0x9c80ec6c) étoiles sur 5 Great classic jazz 25 février 2015

Harold Land was at his peak prowess when this was recorded. I don't know if this group did a lot of live performing, or if it was a studio band, but the cast is stellar. The inclusion of Wes Montgomerey is a welcome bonus. And Louis Hayes just kills it, along with his old bandmate Sam Jones. The tunes are excellent and well-arranged. The feel of "live in the studio" is very strong, unlike the over-engineered, multi-tracked stuff of today. Great players creating great musical art!

HASH(0x9c80ec60) étoiles sur 5 Great session 31 mars 2015
Par Jerzin' - Publié sur Amazon.com

Great, of course. Maybe not gonna make the desert island list, but it's an energetic session with several greats at the top of their game, so I've really enjoyed it and feel it deserves 5 stars. Wes (of course) and Sam solo on the title track! There aren't enough recordings of Wes playing this tune, so it's a highlight for me.
