Might Not Be What You Expect 19 avril 2011

Bad news first: The umbrella is not 7 feet in diameter at its opening, it's only 6 feet. The fabric would be 7 feet if you removed it from the frame and laid it flat, but the curve brings it down to 6 feet. False marketing? Maybe. Unfortunately, that's par for the course when it comes to light modifier marketing (sigh). That said, it's still a really really big umbrella; far bigger than the Westcott 60 incher, which itself is large. The fabric is noticeably more light transmissive. Perhaps Westcott had to choose a thinner fabric to keep the weight reasonable. The fabric still seems durable, but the decreased light-stopping ability might prove troublesome if you plan to use the umbrella as a sunlight diffuser/scrim for portraits. It softens the light nicely, but your subjects may still squint.

Good news: This is probably the toughest photo umbrella I've ever seen. Finally someone made one with fiberglass ribs instead of steel which bends or snaps if the umbrella is dropped. The steel hinges look durable enough for the task and so does the rod. The carrying case is a very helpful bonus (it's got a strap so you can sling it over your shoulder).

I mounted a Canon 580EX2 with its 14mm wide angle diffuser panel deployed at the very end of the rod to see how well a speedlite could illuminate the whole umbrella evenly. While it does cover the whole umbrella, it is definitely hotter in the center. I'm sure if you're using studio strobes, this is a non-issue. You could probably add an OmniBounce or LightSphere to spread the flash beam more easily, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice the power much more.

I have yet to try it out in the breeze. Should be interesting.

Overall, initial impression seems OK. I'd rate it higher if it wasn't so expensive, but everything for photography is (often) overpriced.

Westcott 7 Foot White Umbrella 29 juin 2013

I have been away from umbrellas for quite a while...moved to soft box modifiers to control the light. I was reviewing a Joel Grimes tutorial on studio lighting when he put up this monster! This Westcott product is wonderful. It throws a huge amount of soft light that is just pure cream on a subject. Purchased it right then and there!

It takes up very little space in the carrying case and sets up in 30 seconds. As a shoot though or bounce it is a good piece of equipment. Price wise it is FAR less expensive than an octa-bank. The only down side is you should only use it in studio, I rather suspect if the wind caught it you would be in trouble, but at $99.00 it is easy to replace if you damage it. The build quality is very nice, fiberglass ribs with metal shaft, Westcott didn't cut corners here!

I am going to purchase two more of these, however I recommend you get a diffusion panel to put over the open end of the umbrella to diffuse and soften the light even more. If you shoot portrait this is your baby!

Sturdy 15 avril 2014

I have a large parabolic diffuser for my strobe.

I never would have thought about having something similar to use outdoors as a scrim.

The sturdy bar can withstand the weight and the occasional gust of wind, depending on the strength of your assistant.

The best part of this product is the large area it covers. You can get rid of the hard light and diffuse a couple, vs. trying to adjust and squeeze in two people with a flat scrim.

Highly recommend for photographers who shoot outdoors and care about soft diffused light.

I have only had the umbrella out for a couple of shots, but it works like a champ. You get nice soft filtered light. I have a bigger shoot coming up and I will update the review if I encounter any issues. The carry bag is a classy touch. Yes a big, bright umbrella will attract bugs in the summer. I would add a photo if I could. It is a great product!

It so easy to open and close and it provides such incredible light. Add the Westcott 4631D Parabolic White Diffusion Front (White) and you're in business
