Not Exactly What I Remember 30 mars 2010

I don't want to ruin anyone's childhood--including my own--but Hans Christian Andersen's tales are dreadful. I loved them as a child, and there are still a few gems in here (although none of his really well-known tales), but for fairy tales had such a huge impact on my childhood, the majority of these are barely worth skimming. There is still some lovely language in the stories, beautiful descriptions and some interesting ideas, but you've got to be far, far more patient than I to get through them.

Also, many of the tales are depressing--and I'm not talking 'some fairy tales have gruesome/non-happy endings,' I mean almost all of them end with someone losing everything they have, dying because the leaf that could heal them was buried with a little girl or tragically watching their love marry someone else. This is even true of stories about inanimate objects!

There is an interactive table of contents. But there used to be pictures that aren't in the kindle version, and the picture-captions are still present, appearing unexpectedly to cause small amounts of confusion (and a wish for the picture itself, alas). Page numbers also appear scattered throughout the text.

All that being said, if you're determined to slog your way through some of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, this book contains some forty-five of his stories, both long and short, although most of them are not well-known.

An even more extensive book of Hans Christian Andersen's stories (including all his most popular stories) is Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen, and I can now say that they are far more accessible and readable.

The goodness of any work of literature is a personal thing. I got this book as a freebie on a cheap-o electronic reader that my company gave to me for my 10-year anniversary. That one died within a couple of months, when I was half-way through the book. So I bought this for my Kindle so I could finish it. I like the stories in it, although many of them are pretty dark in nature. Not exactly something that will excite or thrill kids, but nothing that would scare them either. I would say it is PG at worst. The language is dated, as would be expected from stories this old, but if you've got a reasonably good education, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're into reading old works of literature.
