Magnificent!!!!! The best ever for Everett Harp!!!!!!!! 23 septembre 1999

Harp's tribute to Marvin Gaye is truly a work of art, as was Marvin. There is so much feeling in "What's Going On?". This is one of those rare cd's that you will want to play from start to finish again and again!!

Everette Harp's recreation in it's entirity of the classic Marvin Gaye album "What's Going On" is a joy to listen to. I say joy because that is one of the strikingly significant differences betweeen the original recording and Harp's interpretation. The sax of Harp replaces the voice of Gaye, substituting a melodic phrasing over what in certain cases was a melancholic voice of Gaye. This is not to say that the disc doesn't carry emotion , it is just a different hue. Beginning with the opening track, "What's Going On" and transitioning into "What's Happening Brother" the music softly and soothingly carresses the listener invoking the spirit of Marvin Gaye's poignant words offered in an instrumental format. The background vocals are excelent and the personnel featured is an eclectic mix which features additional reed work by smooth jazz players like Najee, Mark Hollingsworth and Kirk Whalum. "Save The Children" is an interesting song that features the spoken word of former late night talk show host Arsenio Hall countering his delivery with Dawn Lewis; Arsenio ends the track by saying "We miss you Marvin." This particular track doesn't work as well because the spoken word doesn't do justice to the socially relevent words nearly as well as pure sax or maybe someone else singing. By contrast on "Mercy Mercy Me"(the ecology song) the vocals have a nice pop element and does work featuring the shared vocal stylings of Kenny Loggins and Howard Hewitt; the end result makes for some good harmonizing and a soulful recreation punctuated by a great solo on piano by George Duke. Another song where vocals are used is "Wholly Holy" and the effect is very good as Yolanda Adams delivers in a soulful style that reminds me of Aretha Franklin in her formative years. This song also features a gospel choir that elevates the song beyond the ordinary for an outstanding version challenging the original. "Inner City Blues " is a multi-textured song feturing Najee on flute and Kirk Whalum on a searing tenor sax solo to close out the classic Gaye album. In essence this is a smooth jazz version of the classic Gaye album that works well. This is soft jazz that massages as the vibes of Gaye continue to live on for future generations. Not necessarily for jazz purists but geared more towards a pop jazz audience, this disc is recommended as an alternative to the Gaye classic but not as a substitution.
Marvin Gaye would be proud 10 août 2007

Everette Harp is a fantastic sax player and What's Going On is a great album. However, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I didn't care for all of the songs on the album--not because they weren't good but because they just weren't my taste. However, I am sure many of you will love the songs--it's just hard to measure a personal preference. Having said that, this album is worth every penny for "What's Going On" and "Mercy Mercy Me" alone. The 30 second clips were all I needed to hear to jump on buying it and the full version is beyond words...but "goodness, gracious" comes to mind. Fantastic!!!
Marvin goes jazz 17 août 2008

What happens when you take the perhaps most popular and most classical album of Motown-ledgend Marvin Gaye and as well one of the 70:s most appreciated "concept albums" and make it more smoothjazz?
The answer is what Everette Harp has done here and the result is truly amazing!
He's has totally re-arranged some of the songs and made them either more gospel or more smoothjazz but still you recognize them from the orginal one's.
And he has very good help from all the great musicians that are playing, in my opinion Everette's best album!
What an effort, Everette! 26 octobre 2008

I think it's the most important work of Everette, my favourite sax player. I like him also when he sings, less when he plays EWI. Track 1 (What's Going On) & 7 (Right On) are fantastic! The Personnel includes George Duke, Doc Powell, Gregg Philinganes, A. Ray "The Weeper" Fuller, Kirk Whalum and Najee.
