You NEED To Read This Book Because:
* it's GRIPPING - the sort of book you can't put down,
* it has an EXCITING plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up to the fast-paced suspense-filled end,

In the summer of 1976, in the English village of Rype-on Marsh, lawyer Hazel Dawkins is anticipating some tranquil time off before the birth of her first child. When she agrees to what she thinks will be some routine work, she finds herself drawn into troubling events in the lives of her clients—and in the past. The distant past. Mysteriously, she encounters Annie, a woman whose romantic and tempestuous life took place more than two centuries ago when Romney Marsh was a violent place, dominated by gangs of smugglers. As her destiny intertwines with Annie’s in the shifting time-scape of the past and present, Hazel confronts a terrifying challenge that parallels history—and could even change it. If she survives.

Biographie de l'auteur

Retired from legal practice, M L Eaton lives near the sea in the beautiful Sussex countryside with a long-suffering husband, a lazy Saluki and an urge to write into the small hours. Marion started her legal career long ago - when there were very few women in the legal profession of England and Wales and the dice tended to be loaded them! After a year working in a legal firm whose offices were close to Circular Quay in Sydney, Australia - and going to work by the idyllic means of crossing the harbour by ferry - she returned to England and a very different life. Encouraged by her husband and friends, she started her own business on Romney Marsh in 1976 when she was expecting her first child. That first tiny office eventually extended until, after a number of changes, retrenchment and growth it now forms part of one of the top 100 legal firms in England and Wales. Marion semi-retired from the practice in the early 1990s and became a complementary health practitioner specialising in aromatherapy, massage and reiki, which she also teaches. For several years she ran a complementary health clinic in the Old Town of Hastings as well as practising part time as a solicitor in her old firm. She became a dab hand at healing her staff's headaches, bad backs and digestive problems - as well as the occasional heartache! - and still misses the wonderful people she worked with. Now fully retired from legal practice and nearly-retired from holistic health practice, Marion is thoroughly enjoying her life: writing, gardening, walking, reading, cooking and developing new and exciting aromatherapy scents for the home. 'When the Clocks Stopped' is her first novel. Although the novel is complete fiction many of the anecdotes, both legal and supernatural have their roots in the truth. The second novel in the 'Mysterious Marsh' series is in the pipeline. Watch this space! 'When the Clocks Stopped' is her debut novel and the first in the Mysterious Marsh series. The next book in the series is entitled 'When the Tide Turned' and is poised for release in April 2014. More information is available at www.marioneaton.com.

When The Clocks Stopped follows an interesting concept of parallel times in the same place, with characters passing across the 'veil' between centuries. Although not an original idea, this part of the story is well done. The plot unfolds at a reasonable pace, though tends to be predictable.

There is a lot of detail unrelated to the plot, in particular about the pending birth of the heroine's child which I found distracting. (If there had been a link between the newborn and the historical characters, this would have been more acceptable. Perhaps that's coming in the sequel.) However, the characters are realistic and the historical elements ring true. I liked the settings and the action scenes, plus the involvement of a trusty dog. There is legal information that supports the plot, though in places it tends to come across a bit forced as if the author is trying to teach the reader about the law.

The Australian terminology is overdone, and too much is explained that doesn't need to be. This story would be better tightened up to two thirds of the length, but all in all, a good debut novel. Worth a read.

I enjoyed this book very much with it's mix of two era's. An interesting storyline. Wonderful description of years gone bye. Once I started to read it time just flew and I could not put it down.

When the Clocks Stopped is an intriguing multi-layered mystery told in an energetic style. We're plunged immediately in the dark past of Romney Marsh, where smuggling was a way of life, of very survival. Then we're flipped into the 1970s and the fortunes of young lawyer, Hazel Dawkins. The modern mystery that Hazel investigates – almost reluctantly only days before the birth to her first child – has resonances with the history of her new home, as it collides with those of Annie several centuries earlier. There are reasons for their mystical connection which are revealed like a series of puzzle pieces. The time-slip episodes are beautifully told and the narrative flips between the two interwoven stories with a dramatic change of style. The plot carries its own truth and the characterisation is strong and real. I found myself wondering if Hazel’s story had links to the author’s own and at the same time I felt an unexpected empathy for Annie’s plight. This is a rollicking read with depth, peppered with quirky characterisation to explore several social issues. I’ve given it four stars because the resolution of the mystery was overtaken by the dramatic arrival of Hazel’s baby and was tied up a little abruptly for me. But the plot twists continue right to the end, even as Hazel is thinking it's all done and dusted. She's an endearing and courageous woman, who readers will want to follow on further investigations into the "Mysterious Marsh".

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good First Effort 13 avril 2015

The write ups all seem to indicate that this is the author's first effort. It is entertaining for a first effort, in most respects. I assume the historical background is correct, but that is somewhat difficult to verify since it is so wedded to the locale. The legal aspects with which the author deals appear to be spot on and adds some interest to the book for her fellow legal professionals. There were some unnecessary details that cause the book to drag in spots and the much repeated references by the principal character to her unborn child as "the bump" got a bit tiresome. All in all, however, I am looking forward to reading the second book.

I really enjoyed the book. The two different "times" was very appealing. It was a quick read and something that you wanted to know more about. When it jumped from the two times it wasn't confusing and blended well together.
