Revue de presse

Lots of gunfire, tactical talk and imaginative plotting. Let Spider draw you into his web, you won't regret it (Sun)

As tough as British thrillers get . . . gripping (Irish Independent)

A writer at the top of his game (Sunday Express)

Présentation de l'éditeur

Dan 'Spider' Shepherd is used to putting his life on the line - for his friends and for his job with MI5. So when one of his former apprentices is kidnapped in the badlands of Pakistan, Shepherd doesn't hesitate to join a rescue mission.

But when the plan goes horribly wrong, Shepherd ends up in the hands of al-Qaeda terrorists. His SAS training is of little help as his captors beat and torture him.

Shepherd's MI5 controller Charlotte Button is determined to get her man out of harm's way, but to do that she's going to have to break all the rules. Her only hope is to bring in America's finest - the elite SEALs who carried out Operation Neptune Spear - in a do-or-die operation to rescue the captives.

White Lies is a fast paced, seat-of-your-pants thriller which will have you hooked from the first page until the last.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Spider lands in the hurt locker and Button plays hardball 15 août 2014

"Hurt locker" ‒ Military slang for a bad and painful place

"You know, it seems to me that we would have been better off sending in the SAS. I said at the time it was a mistake trusting it to the SEALs. They like to go in with guns blazing, kill everyone and let God sort them out." ‒ from a previous Dan Shepherd thriller, False Friends (The 9th Spider Shepherd Thriller)

"One of the SEALs lifted up his night vision goggles to reveal his face. Shepherd recognized him immediately ... `Bloody hell, you're a sight for sore eyes,' said Shepherd." ‒ from WHITE LIES, as Spider kisses and makes up with the SEALs

A couple of books back in FALSE FRIENDS, Spider acted as the MI5 handler for a couple of British-born Muslims as they infiltrated al-Qaeda to thwart a domestic terrorist attack. One of the two, Manraj Chaudhry, ostensibly returned to his medical studies after the mission. But, here in WHITE LIES, we (and Shepherd) learn that he's since been recruited by MI6 without MI5's knowledge and sent to Pakistan's al-Qaeda-infested Tribal Areas on an intelligence-gathering assignment. After Chaudhry's cover is blown, MI6 approaches Spider and his boss, Charlie Button, to send Shepherd in with the Pakistani Special Services Group to rescue the poor devil. Unfortunately, the attempt becomes a bleedin' disaster and now Button, back in London, must play hardball with MI6 and pull her two chestnuts out of the fire.

Author Stephen Leather uses an old but effective technique to ratchet up the tension, i.e. to alternate the narrative back and forth between the dual perspectives of the rescuers and those in need of rescue.

What perhaps makes WHITE LIES the best of the Dan Shepherd adventures is the degree of hurt in which Spider finds himself and the significant role that Charlie Button has to play in the story. If you're a Button fan like me, you've been waiting for this for a long time. She deserves her own series.

I'd like to think that Dan and Charlie will someday get married in St. Paul's Cathedral to a thunderous symphonic performance of Elgar's "Nimrod" and then settle down in Luton to raise little spies for Queen, the (remnants of) Empire, and St. George. But I suspect it won't happen.

(Note: This is a review of an advance hard copy edition received from the publisher compliments of the author. Luck had nothing to do with it.)

I was lucky and received an advance copy of this, the 11th Spider Shepherd thriller.

Stephen Leather once again provides an intelligent thriller that cranks up the tension while exploring some uncomfortable themes. As an author he allows his characters to grow and evolve and tries not to just repeat the same types of storyline.

For me White Lies is about loyalty and how far you are prepared to go to achieve your aims. When an intelligence agent is identified and interrogated by terrorists on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border, Spider joins a local assault team to rescue him and things go horribly wrong…

Sufficient scene setting is in place that we understand and care about the variety of characters here and as readers we are conflicted by both ‘sides’ doing what they have to in order to get answers, one side we will cheer and obviously be outraged by the other – it’s quite a subtle way to get you to not look at things in terms of black and white. Stephen Leather’s books are all about shades of grey.

This is also a book where Spider’s boss, Charlie Button really comes into her own. Along with Spider she had moved into the intelligence services a couple of books back, but now we see her in her element, confident, tough, and willing to cross the line for her people. She has become a force to be reckoned with. Great to also see more of characters from previous books including the mysterious Richard Yokely.

I am an obvious fan of the series but this is another great entry.

As an avid Stephen leather fan I eagerly awaited the release of this novel and placed a pr order for it. I was not disapointed as it was a good read thrilling and had its moments of suspense. It was good to read the inclusion of several characters from previous books who all fitted in well and were directly involved in the story.

I think it was a little lacking in the story line in as much as Afghanistan and Iraq come inot the equation in a storyline which is now becoming quite overwritten by many different writers. He is still able to build the suspense and hold your attention, from when I received this until it was finished was around 12 hours, good daytime and night time reading.

However I do hope Stephen Leather is not going to go down the road of violence and torture just to fill his pages, even in this book I skipped one or two pages because of the description of torture, not because of the violence but simply because it has been written by so many others.

The other criticism I have is the lack of information as to what happened to the MI6 handler who set the whole thing off I think there was at least another chapter or two there but he just vanished inot thin air with no follow up or conclusion, however as I say it was good to see some of the characters from previous books being involved.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 The series just keeps on getting better. 16 août 2014

Stephen Leather always manages to leave his readers eager for the next instalment in the series. Dan Shepherd at the beginning of the 11th episode is revealed to be approaching his 40th birthday, and his MI5 psychologist wonders whether he's approaching a midlife crisis, and should be 'promoted' to a desk.

And is then sent urgently to Pakistan to help rescue a former amateur MI5 agent from the hands of Al Qaeda, who'd been recruited by an unpleasant MI5 agent previously introduced in the short stories set in Shepherd's SAS days in Sierra Leone.

At about half way, the novel took a turning I wasn't expecting. And then it finally - too soon - ended in a 'high'.

I wonder whether the 12th instalment will continue from the point this one finishes?

I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of White Lies. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, there was great suspense and tension which made it a great page turner. There is a lot mor of Charlotte Button in this one and she shows a very assertive side and using dark forces to get a job done. I thoroughly recommend this book
